I was in Midtown on my way to the Bronx when I met a homeless man who told me he’s been left on the streets for years. This is the human cost of a broken shelter system and a failed Department of Homeless Services. We don’t have enough psychiatric beds. We don’t have safe shelters. We don’t have leadership. People with serious mental illness are being left to deteriorate in public. They are a danger to themselves and to others and our city turns a blind eye. As your Mayor, I will end this crisis. I will fix our shelters, expand hospital care, and bring back the NYPD Homeless Outreach Unit disbanded under DeBlasio. This is a humanitarian crisis. Day one we start treating it like one.
