What would happen if you drilled a hole straight through the ice in Antarctica and jumped in? You jump in and the snow around you quickly changes to dense blue ice. As you go deeper, you realize the air bubbles trapped all around you are from the time of the Renaissance on the surface, then Ancient Rome, then the last Ice Age! But the pressure is rising and you’re getting closer to Earth’s hot core, the ice suddenly turns into… To find out what it is, follow along! #Antarctica #ice #mystery #Science

Why are these 5,000 basketball-sized spheres deep under the ice in Antarctica? It’s an observatory all the way down at the bottom of the world. It spans over a cubic kilometer in size and involves drilling 2500m below the surface. It was a massive undertaking requiring tons of resources... so how did they do it? #IceCube #Antarctica #Science #Technology

What if you just keep going? Imagine you fly off at the speed of light. After 8.3 minutes, you’d reach our Sun. After 4 hours and 6 minutes, you’d pass the furthest planet in our solar system. How long do you think it takes you at the speed of light to get to the farthest object humans have ever sent? Follow if you think less than 24 hours. But at 4 years in, just as you’re passing our nearest star… something weird happens… If you like optimistic science and tech stories, follow for more of our show Huge If True! #animation #farthest #Science #technology #historyfacts

They dug to the bottom of Antarctica… Using a giant drill like this one, scientists cut a ring into the ice, creating a core in the middle. As they drilled deeper, they’re traveling back in time, reaching ice that formed an estimated 1.2 million years ago…  For more optimistic science and tech, follow along! #animation #deepest #Science #technology #historyfacts #antarctica #ice

This plane cured my fear of flying. A Zero G flight is incredibly strenuous – not just for the occupants (though definitely them too, it’s called the Vomit Comet for a reason!) but also for the plane! A Zero G flight requires 3 pilots to complete 31 maneuvers that involve repeatedly experiencing VERY steep inclines, HEAVY G forces, and casually diving toward the Earth. I assumed these planes needed to be specially designed and reinforced to pull this off. It turns out… I was wrong. Follow along to find out more! #ZeroG #airplane #Flying #Science #Technology

NASA is sending humans farther from Earth than ever before. This is the second of three planned NASA missions to go back to the moon, in hopes of eventually establishing a moon colony. This mission, Artemis II, is about testing the spacecraft, Orion, during a 10 day trip around earth and the moon while checking the ship’s life support, navigation, communication, and radiation shelter. If all goes well, the third and final mission will have humans landing back on the moon for the first time in 50 years! To see more about that, follow along! #NASA #space #Artemis #moon #Science

This is the first baby cured with a custom DNA fix! The tool is called CRISPR. To use it, scientists use a protein, directed by molecules that act like GPS coordinates, to search through a cell’s DNA until it finds a match... then makes a cut... so they can stick in new DNA. It’s basically a text editor for genes! This baby had one tiny error in its DNA causing a life-threatening disorder called CPS1 deficiency. So they fixed that one error out of 3 billion DNA pairs. This is truly huge. This same tech is saving other lives too - like giving more standardized edits to people with sickle cell disease.

If you want to know more, we just published our newest Huge Conversations with… drumroll please… a scientist who won the Nobel Prize for discovering CRISPR, Dr. Jennifer Doudna! It was an honor to speak with her, and the conversation (and potential of CRISPR) truly blew my mind. Link in bio. LOut of all the different kinds of solar systems, ours appears to be the rarest! Why does this plane need 3 pilots? Zero G flights are very difficult to pull off, particularly for the pilots. In order to make everyone on the plane feel weightless the pilots need to keep the plane perfectly around you. That means mastering a physics problem that requires three separate pilots. Here’s why. This asteroid might hit the moon and we might have to nuke it. No, seriously. Earlier this year, we thought this asteroid 2024 YR4 might be on track to hit Earth. Good news: It won’t. Bad news: it might now hit the moon. So, NASA just came out with a real proposal for what we could do if a lunar impact becomes more likely. Here are our options. I know there are internet cables that travel deep across the ocean floor… And I know they send information in the form of light down these tiny tubes of glass about the size of a human hair... But HOW does this video become lightwaves? You know every video is a bunch of 1s and 0s. So we need to alter the wave of light to represent 1s and 0s. Here's how. The amount of information we can send this way is INSANE. So when you’re scrolling, think about waves of light down glass tubes on the bottom of the ocean!
