If your mixes are sounding flat, a bit amateurish, then try multiband saturation on your master! Saturation brings out something called harmonics - think of the harmonics as extra details in the sound that can't be heard. Saturation uncovers them. I think what is special about this Vocal Chain is that it sounds great in every genre - just adjust the amount of reverb and delay effect to taste. To be honest, the kick is one of the hardest things to mix. It’s important to get the power and presence in it, but it clashes with the bass on most instruments. Check out the videos on my feed to see the tutorials I’ve done on mixing the kick and bass. Anyway, I find these 5 frequencies ranges are the ranges that often need looking at when mixing. I treat the drums in a drum bus on every mix, but more so on an acoustic drum mix like in this video. Acoustic drums often require more treatment due to the dynamic nature of a live drum performance. A 'Flat' sounding mix is something that a lot of us have suffered from at some point. This tutorial depicts the techniques I would apply to bring a flat mix to life. In this example you will hear the effect of each plugin as I build it on top of the others, until we get a mix that is sounding much more vibrant, punchy and exciting. Before anyone pipes up, cool your jets, of course it's the producer that makes a mix sound good, not necessarily the plugins. For example, a bad mixer won't make a great plugin sound great if they don't know how to use it properly. With that said, there are plugins out there that have wonderful tonal qualities, smoothness, harmonics and polish. And these are the plugins I am focussing on in this video - plugins that have an instant 'wow' factor on your mixes. Using EQ to carve out space in the mix for instruments that are clashing is still the to-to option: it gets the job done. I think where Curves Resolve can fit in is if you want good results quickly and effortlessly and if your mix is suffering from extreme masking. Unmasking is a crucial process of mixing - it will de-cloud your mix and create more clarity and definition. This is not an ad for the plugin. I’ve just been using it of late and found it to be really useful.
