Of course, this is super obvious - every vocal is wildly different to the next and so there is no one-size-fits-all approach that will work when it comes to any kind of mixing, including EQ and compression. That said, applying a hi-lass filter up to 90hz, creating a small drip at around 150-250hz and boost by 2-3dbs at 10-20kHz via a high shelf filter is something I find myself doing on most vocal - to clean up unwanted frequencies, to make space for the snare and to add some air. The rest is totally dependent on the vocal you're mixing. BUT....if you are after some presence on the vocal - boosting between 1-5kHz will achieve that for you. I think what is special about this Vocal Chain is that it sounds great in every genre - just adjust the amount of reverb and delay effect to taste. To be honest, the kick is one of the hardest things to mix. It’s important to get the power and presence in it, but it clashes with the bass on most instruments. Check out the videos on my feed to see the tutorials I’ve done on mixing the kick and bass. Anyway, I find these 5 frequencies ranges are the ranges that often need looking at when mixing. I treat the drums in a drum bus on every mix, but more so on an acoustic drum mix like in this video. Acoustic drums often require more treatment due to the dynamic nature of a live drum performance. A 'Flat' sounding mix is something that a lot of us have suffered from at some point. This tutorial depicts the techniques I would apply to bring a flat mix to life. In this example you will hear the effect of each plugin as I build it on top of the others, until we get a mix that is sounding much more vibrant, punchy and exciting. Now most producers send all of their drums to a drum bus for treatment. But there are those of us out there (me and some others!) who take the kicks out of the drum bus. That's because kicks are so important in a mix and require treatment away from boombastic kicks and shrill hats. And what other instrument works in conjunction with the kick? The bass! So sending the kicks and bass to a single bus for treatment, is a sure fire away to get your low end sounding tight, clean, punchy and powerful. Give it a go in whatever genre you produce - it will works wonders!
