This technique doesn't work on every track. It's far better suited to slower tracks or where there are gaps in the vocals where the reverb can swell up. The attack and release controls are important because they will determine how obvious it is that the reverb is being pushed down when the vocal sings (attack) and how quickly the reverb swells up in the gaps (release) so you'll have to use your judgment on that one. This should work on any compressor or reverb providing you have a sidechain option on the compressor. Remember to use a loooong decay (6 seconds at least) to get the effect.

Of course, this is super obvious - every vocal is wildly different to the next and so there is no one-size-fits-all approach that will work when it comes to any kind of mixing, including EQ and compression. That said, applying a hi-lass filter up to 90hz, creating a small drip at around 150-250hz and boost by 2-3dbs at 10-20kHz via a high shelf filter is something I find myself doing on most vocal - to clean up unwanted frequencies, to make space for the snare and to add some air. The rest is totally dependent on the vocal you're mixing. BUT....if you are after some presence on the vocal - boosting between 1-5kHz will achieve that for you. Of course, this is super obvious - every vocal is wildly different to the next and so there is no one-size-fits-all approach that will work when it comes to any kind of mixing, including EQ and compression. That said, applying a hi-lass filter up to 90hz, creating a small drip at around 150-250hz and boost by 2-3dbs at 10-20kHz via a high shelf filter is something I find myself doing on most vocal - to clean up unwanted frequencies, to make space for the snare and to add some air. The rest is totally dependent on the vocal you're mixing. BUT....if you are after some presence on the vocal - boosting between 1-5kHz will achieve that for you. I treat the drums in a drum bus on every mix, but more so on an acoustic drum mix like in this video. Acoustic drums often require more treatment due to the dynamic nature of a live drum performance.
