the handbag, masculinity & perfomativity @ronning were kind enough to gift me their everyday bag and it got me thinking of the wider trend of menswear brands and men adopting the handbag in their collections, but what does this say about masculinity today compared to over the past 50 years? I think this is a positive shift away from a narrow view of masculinity defined by power suits and frat boys wearing skinny chinos to a more diverse perspective where men feel comfortable experimenting with things traditionally seen a more feminine in fashion: one of the core ways we outwardly express ourselves to the world! Some of you may just say this rise is adjacent to the rise of the ‘performative male’ and although that may be the case for some I don’t think that is the case for most And as promised in the video here are some of my other favourite bag recommendations @pearledivory - Buckle Bag @ordinarypractice - Drift Bag @lemaire - Weekend Belt Bag @sabatier1947 - all their bags but specifically the 617 @nktrmnv - Boris Bag

Dressing the Part Episode 1: Dressing Well ≠ Style American Psycho has always been a beacon for menswear inspo, and although the tailoring is impeccable, I would argue that the protagonist, Patrick Bateman, has no style. On paper, Bateman does everything perfectly; one could say his wardrobe is flawless. But when you look into the motives of why he dresses the way he does, you realise he's more of a 'swag-jacker' than a style icon. Costume designer Isis Mussenden, as all good costume designers do, is reflecting Bateman's character through his clothes. He is a hollow shell with no personality or identity. The only thing that motivates him is wanting approval from his colleagues, a reality that in turn drives him crazy. This need for approval causes him to mimic the environment around him, subsequently 'dressing well' but lacking style, because style has a personal element. If you just copy exactly what someone else is wearing, you aren't stylish; you are just stealing their style

Steven Soderbergh‘s Oceans 11 remake may be the swaggiest movie in film history, a big part of that being due to Jeffery Kurland’s costume design which gave us the iconic looks that no movie has really been able to top till today This video highlights the challenge of dressing the 11 heist members. Making them all look distinct from each other and capturing their personalities, using this case study to help change the way we look at our own wardrobes and purchases.
