After the U.S. Department of State advisory telling Americans to return home from Egypt and other countries in the Middle East, many of you have been asking the same question: is it safe to be here? The good ✨ the bad 👎🏽 and the ugly 👹 For every beautiful photo I’ve posted from around the world, there’s usually a story happening somewhere off camera. I’ve been pickpocketed, fined, stranded, gotten sick in front of a group of people I JUST met, had my luggage dumped out at airport security 😭, been judged for taking my own photos, and had moments that were genuinely scary. And yet… I still keep booking the flight. 😂 Travel has given me some of the most beautiful experiences of my life, but it’s also taught me how to laugh at myself, problem solve on the fly, trust my gut, speak up for myself, and accept that sometimes the story you come home with is VERY different from the one you thought you were going to tell. Just a misty morning over the Caribbean Sea… 🌊✈️ Until the clouds cleared and one of Belize’s most iconic natural wonders came into view: the Great Blue Hole. 😍 Sitting about 43 miles off the coast of mainland Belize, the Great Blue Hole is a massive marine sinkhole within Lighthouse Reef Atoll and part of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From above, you really get a sense of just how wild it is: a nearly perfect circle of deep blue surrounded by turquoise Caribbean water. If seeing the Great Blue Hole is on your Belize bucket list, here’s what you need to know: ✈️ Scenic flight: This is the option I chose, and arguably the best way to appreciate its size and shape. Flights typically depart from San Pedro, Caye Caulker, or Belize City and circle the Blue Hole so passengers on both sides get a view. 🤿 Diving: Certified divers can experience the Great Blue Hole underwater, where the real draw is its depth, limestone formations, stalactites, and marine life. 🚤 Snorkeling: Some full-day boat tours visit Lighthouse Reef and the surrounding area, often combining the Blue Hole with other snorkeling stops. Just a misty morning over the Caribbean Sea… 🌊✈️ Until the clouds cleared and one of Belize’s most iconic natural wonders came into view: the Great Blue Hole. 😍 Sitting about 43 miles off the coast of mainland Belize, the Great Blue Hole is a massive marine sinkhole within Lighthouse Reef Atoll and part of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From above, you really get a sense of just how wild it is: a nearly perfect circle of deep blue surrounded by turquoise Caribbean water. If seeing the Great Blue Hole is on your Belize bucket list, here’s what you need to know: ✈️ Scenic flight: This is the option I chose, and arguably the best way to appreciate its size and shape. Flights typically depart from San Pedro, Caye Caulker, or Belize City and circle the Blue Hole so passengers on both sides get a view. 🤿 Diving: Certified divers can experience the Great Blue Hole underwater, where the real draw is its depth, limestone formations, stalactites, and marine life. 🚤 Snorkeling: Some full-day boat tours visit Lighthouse Reef and the surrounding area, often combining the Blue Hole with other snorkeling stops.
