I would have answered this question a lot differently 5 years ago. I used to think my “muses” were people who did me wrong, hurt me in some way, or were just a passing stone of a fling. I told my best friend once, “thank god for “xyz” cause I wrote this song”… and they reminded me in that moment that it wasn’t “because” of them that I had that singular moment of “success”. That, what I chose to do, with the experience of hurt, an isolated experience, was the part of my seldom grief that was only mine. Because, really, we could do a lot with pain. We could hurt other people with it, or sometimes, like I try to do, is turn it into something tangible that maybe, hopefully, someone could relate to. I had to lose the identity that I built around any sort of success for myself, that attached other people as the source of it, but instead realized that if I had spent my life avoiding those parts of me, there would be no art to begin with. So yeah. I guess my life is the muse. A great world of experiences, so much bigger than the “one” you thought was the “one.”
