HOPWTR X STONE BREWING CENTENNIAL CITRUS

Some collaborations are inevitable ✨

When two SoCal originals obsessed with hops cross paths, the result isn’t meant to be explained. It’s meant to be felt.

Layers unfold slowly, moving between pine and citrus, with a crisp finish that lingers longer than expected. It’s unmistakably hop-forward, but lighter on its feet.

It’s not just a collaboration, it’s a bridge between two icons. A nod to tradition, pushed forward.

This is what happens when limits are removed.

Available NOW for Dry Jan (and beyond?👀)

POV: It’s National IPA Day🍺

Few beer styles have shaped modern craft brewing like the IPA, and few IPAs have stood the test of time like Stone IPA.

Brewed with an unapologetically bold hop bill, Stone IPA helped define the West Coast IPA with bright citrus, piney aromatics, assertive bitterness, and a dry finish that keeps you coming back for another sip.

Here’s to the beer style that changed everything. Happy National IPA Day!

It’s not too late to stock up for this very important holiday. Use find.stonebrewing.com to track down your favorite IPAs in your zip code.

In the depths of the brewery lies a technomantic lair known as the control room. From there, all of our dastardly plans to brew unfathomably tasty IPA recipes come to life.

Each recipe is an incantation, with meticulous hop calculations to maximize sensory enjoyment and put unsuspecting IPA lovers in a trance.

In this concoction, Simcoe lays the foundation like the bassline in a 14-minute jam, while Citra and Strata round out a hypnotic hop trio, layering in mystical melodies of ruby grapefruit, lime, and mango.

Stone Chill Villain is rolling out throughout SoCal, and is available at ALL Stone locations now!

A Double IPA 30 years in the making. 🍺

When we opened our doors in 1996, we had big ambitions. 30 years later, Stone beer is enjoyed nationwide—and we still love making great beer as much as people love drinking it.

To celebrate three decades of brewing excellence, we’re raising a glass to the style we helped put on the map: the West Coast Double IPA. This all-American hop bill brings together classic varieties, brand new ones, and everything in between for a beer worthy of the occasion.

Stone 30th Anniversary Double IPA is available now exclusively at all Stone locations.

But 30 years of Stone isn’t just about the beer—it’s about the community that’s been there for every pint, every release, and every unforgettable moment.

Join us at Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens – Liberty Station on September 12th, 2026 for our 30th Anniversary Celebration, where we’ll be taking over the whole place all day with live music, rare beers, throwback experiences, games, and more.

San Diego beer history almost slipped through the cracks. Then Judith Downie, a historian, librarian, and self-proclaimed hoarder, stepped in. She’s filed away a century of beer artifacts in a meticulously organized basement collection at CSUSM. Raise one to the archivists.

In 2016, Cal State University San Marcos got a proposal for an “engibeering” certificate; one of the classes was beer history. When @downiejudith–who’s been library faculty since 2000—started asking around, she learned that no one was saving the region’s modern brewing history. Not colleges. Not organizations. Not museums. The stories of a billion-dollar industry were stuck in time, just gathering dust in collectors’ garages.

So, the Brewchive at @csusm was born.

The archive now covers every brewery that has ever even thought to exist in San Diego County from 1868 on. Glassware. Growlers. Coasters. Photographs. Tap handles. Licenses and legal filings and press releases. Downie calls herself a hunter-gatherer. Some artifacts she seeks out. Others are bestowed upon her. Like the 650 boxes of materials she received from fellow hoarder and @stonebrewing founder Greg Koch.

Back in the early ’90s, when San Diego’s modern breweries were getting started, there was no playbook. What San Diego did have was collaboration. Nearly every brewery in town works together, collaborates, innovates, cheers each other on. As Koch said when he helped form the San Diego Brewers Guild: “If we don’t stick together, we will all sink.”

Three decades later, the San Diego beer world still has that same spirit. And you’ll see the evidence—of festivals and collabs and anniversary parties and partnerships—throughout the Brewchive.

As Stone Brewing celebrates 30 years, it’s helping us dig through the weird, wonderful paper trail of a beer scene it helped shape. More stories from our new series, A Stone’s Throw, to come.

Some people like beer. Some people love beer. Ken Fowler has a home kegerator, a storage unit full of memorabilia, and a filing system for beer labels.

Ken stumbled upon @stonebrewing in 2003 after a bartender suggested Arrogant Bastard instead of his usual order. The name, as it tends to do, got a chuckle out of him. But one pint later, he was hooked. Never looked back. Stone was a much smaller operation in San Marcos back then. It grew by word of mouth. So Ken did his part: he told everyone he knew. Then he started saving pieces of the story.

He showed up to this shoot with boxes and boxes of treasures. A well-worn T-shirt from Stone’s 9th anniversary. Gold-etched growlers he bought for the lifetime refill discount. Tap handle stickers that have very little stick left. A bottle he popped at his retirement party two years ago. Growler tags tucked into plastic sleeves, because Ken invented a better way to organize them.

Stone’s grown from a locally loved brewery into one of the country’s defining craft beer brands. Along the way: new buildings, new owners, new chapters, a whole lot of new beers. And Ken’s shown up through all of it. About once a month, to be specific. Whenever his kegerator runs dry.

As Stone Brewing celebrates 30 years, we’re helping spotlight the people and places who’ve been along for the ride. More from our new series A Stone’s Throw coming soon.

Two guys from the indie music scene, a warehouse, and a gut feeling that beer wasn’t as great or weird as it should be. Thirty years after Stone Brewing tapped its first keg, we called up the guys who started it all—Greg Koch and Steve Wagner—and asked for all the stories.

Stone’s early days weren’t just about two founders taking a risk. They were about the people willing to roll the dice on them, too.

Independent restaurant owners put an unknown local beer on tap. Brewers shared knowledge instead of protecting it. Stone was given a chance when there wasn’t exactly a line of people waiting for the next craft beer.

Greg remembers sending postcards to hundreds of restaurants and getting just three or four people interested enough to follow through. Steve remembers that their earliest customers tended to be entrepreneurs—other people who could hear “we’re two guys trying to start a brewery” and say, “yeah, let’s give it a shot.”

This fall, Stone celebrates 30 years. Names, faces, beers, and brewers have all evolved since 1996. But Steve and Greg’s legacy hasn’t: take the risk, make something you believe in, and always extend a hand to others who are doing the same.

This is A Stone’s Throw, our series celebrating @stonebrewing and the people, places, and ideas that helped get this massive boulder rolling. Stay tuned for more.

He started as a protector of buildings. @StoneBrewing made him a lookout agaisnt boring beer. And somewhere along the way, the gargoyle made the leap onto skin.

Stone’s not-so-cuddly guardian has been spotted in places brewery art usually doesn’t go: on someone’s shin in a taproom, on the shoulder next to you at the pub, on the arm of a brewer or bartender. Some would call a gargoyle’s face—as beautifully chiseled as it may be—a bit of an acquired taste. The people who get him inked would say the opposite. He’s a protagonist. A watchdog. A good luck charm.

For this chapter of our Stone Brewing series, A Stone’s Throw, we traced those inky lines through the city. They led us to Bobby Johnson, aka @glendalebully—one of San Diego’s most acclaimed tattoo artists, and an Ink Master season 15 alum—and to Emily Racanelli, who visited Bobby for a gargoyle tattoo ahead of her wedding at Stone Liberty Station. To Emily, this gargoyle’s a protector, a permanent reminder of one of the biggest days of her life, and, she says, “something that feels like home.”

Stay tuned for more from A Stone’s Throw.

Give Laurel a flavor, and she’ll build you a world. Meet @stonebrewing’s packaging designer, who’s been translating new brews into weird, wild, gorgeous visuals for eight years and counting.

Take the newest three-beer series. Chill Villain lives somewhere between cryo hops and an ’80s metal poster. Live Current has an electric eel, ocean blues, lightning bolts, and a visceral jolt of brightness. Green Buds is tropical danky goodness, with funky flowers smoking their way across the can.

Laurel builds those worlds piece by piece. She sketches, hunts for references, works digitally in Procreate and Illustrator—and, when Chill Villain needed hands wrapped around a crystal ball, she photographed her own to get them right.

Then comes the Tetris. Even the most wild illustration has to play nicely with Stone’s guidelines around its gargoyle, typography, and packaging architecture. It’s a balancing act she’s been mastering since 2018, when one of her first big assignments was revamping Buenaveza, Stone’s Mexican lager, as a self-described “baby designer.”

Next time you crack a Stone beer, take a good look. Thanks to Laurel, the flavor might be hiding in plain sight.

The breweries that built San Diego’s beer scene were remarkably bad at being rivals.

In the early days of local craft beer, there wasn’t a massive audience waiting with tasting glasses raised. IPAs were something your eccentric uncle drank. “Hops” hadn’t entered the cultural lexicon. And we didn’t yet know beer could be something other than sad and beige.

So local breweries had to build an audience from scratch. They shared knowledge. Ingredients. Access. And the occasional hard-earned lesson. Stone Brewing—which is celebrating 30 years—was part of that early push, helping other San Diego beers reach more taps and more drinkers.

Rising tides lift all ships. Every brewery that won people over helped raise the whole scene.

We saw that spirit at North Park Festival of Beers. You’ll see it again this Friday, August 7, if you’re joining us at San Diego Mag’s Best of San Diego party. Start at the Stone booth. Then make the rounds. Play the field. Great beer has never been a solo sport.

More from our new series, A Stone’s Throw, coming soon.
