Nothing compares to your first United match. And we caught up with Jason Momoa before his... 🥺.

We took the one and only @prideofgypsies for lunch at @fenixrestaurants where he was blown away by the space and felt like he’d ‘landed in Greece.’ We chatted Manc pubs, being onstage with Ozzy for the last time, and of course his beloved Reds. Head to the link in @mcrfinest bio to see more from our latest episode of mEats.

Some mEats episodes ease their way in. A coffee. A handshake. A bit of polite small talk before the first plate lands. This one didn’t start with coffee. It started with Jason Momoa and a glass of vodka.

The vodka in question was @meilivodka - Jason’s own spirit - and crucially, this wasn’t a ‘celebrity pops by with a branded bottle’ situation. Jason drinks it. He’s deadly serious about it. He talks about it like someone who’s been building up to this for years. Which, as it turns out, he has.

THE NEW SUNDAY ROAST CRAMMED INTO A HUGE YORKSHIRE PUDDING

What if the Yorkshire Pudding was not merely an appealing side, but the vessel in which your Sunday roast is served?

After a brainwave involving their Chicago deep dish pans, usually used for pizza, @americanpiesmcr in Ancoats have only gone and done it. They’ve stuffed their new Sunday Roasts - now served all day long on Sundays - into a giant Yorkshire, crusted with rosemary and parmesan.

But while this is an eye-catching move, it’s also no gimmick. This would be a great roast whatever it’s served in. There’s porchetta stuffed with sausage and herbs, there’s perfectly pink striploin of beef, and a veggie roast with wild mushroom and candied walnuts, served with great roast potatoes finished with garlic butter, braised red cabbage and heavily buttered carrot and parsnip mash.

Extras include a four-cheese cauliflower cheese (with or without nduja or truffle), and a giant pig in a blanket.

⏰ Sundays 12-11pm

“I’VE BEEN HERE FIVE YEARS AND I’VE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE IT… IT’S VERY WORRYING”

New Islington Marina is one of our favourite spots to enjoy a coffee and watch the world go by. For many people, it is home too, with a community of canal boats making a real neighbourhood on the water.

If you’ve been for a walk around the marina recently though, you might have noticed the water levels dropping. With some boats now just inches off the canal bed, residents are worried their homes will be destroyed.

We went down yesterday to speak to residents Kiera and Andy about what’s happened in the past few days, and more importantly, what happens next...

A spokesperson for waterways charity Canal & River Trust said: “The driest spring on record and the continued hot dry weather into summer is impacting water availability, including on the Rochdale Canal.

“Our charity is out managing water levels and doing all we can to keep the network topped up. To help save water, the canal locks into Manchester have temporarily been closed to navigation. We want to get the canal back open and available for boats as soon as possible, but this will require significant rainfall to replenish water availability to sufficient levels.

“We have a constant programme of inspection and maintenance of the handmade canal locks, including replacing them when they come to the end of their working life. Like a lot of lock gates there is some leakage at Lock 82, however, they are in good condition and are not scheduled for replacement.”

THE BURY FAMILY MAKING BLACK PUDDING TO A SECRET RECIPE FOR 160 YEARS | LOOKING BACK AT 2025

If you know one thing about Bury, it’s probably black pudding. Around here, the blood sausage is a non-negotiable breakfast item.

Tony and Mary Sinacola are the husband and wife duo who have run Chadwick’s for the last five decades - although the family can trace their roots selling black pudding in Bury back to 1865.

Chadwick is Mary’s side of the family, and while it’s a love of fishing that brought them together, it’s a love of black pudding that’s kept them together. And judging by the daily queues that snake around the market every day, the feeling around here towards the black stuff is mutual.

Locals queue up to buy it to take home, or enjoy it piping hot from the steamer. Condiments-wise, there’s a load to choose from - piccalilli, ketchup, vinegar - but the real heads know that you’re supposed to go in for a generous drizzle of the homemade mustard.

Tony’s personal favourite black pudding accompaniment? ‘Another black pudding’. Obviously.

While most supermarkets offer a pale imitation, you can only get Chadwick’s at @burymarket. We’d recommend making the pilgrimage.

⏰ Weds and Fri 9am - 4.30pm, Sat 9am-5pm (they’re currently closed until 16 January)

THE UK’S FIRST ‘PIZZA DOUGH BAKERY’ COMES TO MANCHESTER

@fermapizzabakery takes inspiration from the comforting nature of high street favourite Greggs, combined with the doughy perfection of your favourite artisanal pizza spot.

The result is a spread of sweet and savoury bakes using pizza dough, which makes for optimal pastry firmness, flavour and golden colour.

The line-up will change weekly, but you can expect to see things like marmite muffins, Cornish calzone and mini Detroit pizzas. That birria sausage roll is well worth a try, and you can still enjoy the original Foldies - folded pizza base sandwiches - offering too.

With all the baked goods priced at £3-£6.50, it’s a great new lunchtime option to add to your rotation.

THE BAKERY BRINGING BACK LANCASHIRE CLASSICS WITH SELL-OUT CUSTARD TARTS, OVEN BOTTOMS AND ECCLES CAKES

Lots of styles of baking have had their moment in the spotlight recently - from French to Japanese - just look at your city centre faves. Now a new bakehouse in picturesque Ramsbottom is showing the traditional Lancashire bakery some love. And we say: about time too.

Rich Sharples, who came up working across Gary Usher’s Elite Bistros, has returned to his old stomping ground to create @loafibakehouse, and he’s sticking to what he knows and loves. That means flaky Eccles cakes, perfectly golden sausage rolls, homemade oven bottoms with classic fillings and an indulgent custard tart that could steal back the throne from the pastel de nata.

It's unfussy, delicious stuff that you’ll have found in bakeries in this part of the world for decades, but done really well. And judging by how much they were working to keep the displays stocked up, it’s been truly embraced.

Construction has finished on the 'life-changing' @embassyvillagemcr, a new community of homes and support spaces built beneath transformed railway arches in Castlefield.

Developed by the charity Embassy on land provided by @peelwaters, the project delivers 40 fully furnished homes with private entrances, alongside communal facilities including a village hall, sports area and gardens designed to foster wellbeing and independence.

More than 130 businesses contributed pro-bono expertise or donated materials to bring the project to completion, with partners including @capitalcentric and Vermont Construction Group, the latter of whom delivered the build at no profit.

Funding included a £3.5 million donation from The Moulding Foundation and £1.7 million in Brownfield Development Funding from the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, supplemented by support from foundations such as Garfield Weston and Benefact Trust.

Designed as a purpose-built environment to help people transition out of homelessness with dignity, residents will receive weekly personalised support in areas such as budgeting, cooking and work readiness in addition to having their own living space.

The outdoor areas have been planted with more than 1,800 plants to enhance wellbeing and community spirit. In addition to financial funding, many key components of the build have been donated to keep costs down, including all of the windows, air source heat pumps, bed frames and furniture.

THE CITY CENTRE THROUGH THE YEARS: HISTORIC HOTELS AND A CINEMA THAT’S NOW A SPOONS

Manchester city centre is packed with historic buildings, from the Midland Hotel - where Charles Rolls met Henry Royce - to the Deansgate Picture House, which is now better known as a stunner of a Wetherspoons - the Moon Under Water.

It’s seen a lot of change. We’ve looked back through the archives to see how these landmark spots looked back in the day.

THIS INDIAN RESTAURANT HAS ITS OWN ‘CURRY DRAWER’

First there was the tiramisu drawer, made virally famous by pasta dons Onda. Now, thanks to chef Prasanta Patra’s @ahaarindianstreetfd, we have the ‘curry drawer’.

In his impressively organised kitchen in Prestwich, he and his team turn out exceptional dishes which echo his experience cooking all over India, from Hyderabad to Chennai.

And thanks to all this wealth of kitchen savvy, his whole pull out drawer system is ‘pretty unique’, he says.

Ahaar, which opened just a few months ago, serves a stand-out butter chicken, rich Goan fish curries and the British-Indian ‘dak bungalow’ chicken, a dish which dates back to the Raj and is so named after the rest houses where the British government officials would stay.

And for when it gets chilly, he’s got Kashmiri curries like the lamb yakhni which will warm the cockles, and irresistible Indo-Chinese-style chicken lollipops.

Taking no shortcuts - from roasting and grinding his own spices to making all his base gravies from scratch, this place is worth the journey to North Manchester.

STEVENSON SQUARE THROUGH THE YEARS: FROM 18TH CENTURY WASTELAND TO TRENDY HEART OF THE NORTHERN QUARTER

We all know Manchester is brimming with history. But a lot of us won’t realise that as you commute to or from work, meet up with friends or nip to the shops, there’s so much of the past right beneath your feet.

First up, Stevenson Square. The bustling heart of the Northern Quarter, this area of conservation is home to some of the city’s most vibrant businesses, from hairdressers to art shops, bars to lifestyle stores, it’s usually where you’ll find us enjoying a lunch time pint.

Image 1: 1891
In the latter decades of the 19th century, the square was a popular spot for open-air speakers, congregations and processions. Most of the private houses were converted to commercial properties, and it became an even bigger hive of business as the city dominated the textile industry during the Industrial Revolution.

Image 2: 1921
Gas lamps, cobbled streets and the old trams. Manchester, like the rest of the country, had suffered huge losses during the First World War.

Image 3: 1939
Stevenson Square on the eve of war. It’s hard to believe that when this photo was taken, the whole world was about to change again. Looking from Lever Street, you can see the old public toilets in the centre, with the area around it used as a bus terminal.

Image 4: 1970
The Bay Horse Tavern - the home of many post-work nights out. It’s been here pretty much since the birth of the Northern Quarter, first as The New Inn and then The Bay Horse Hotel before settling on its current name in the mid 19th century. What a boozer.

Image 5: 1986
Now home to the Milano Barbershop, the corner unit between Spear Street and Hilton Street was Vina’s Newsagents - notice the cigarette advertising and old-school posters. In 1986 Manchester, the GMEX had just opened, Sir Alex Ferguson took over at Manchester United and The Smiths released their pivotal third studio album The Queen Is Dead.

UK’S ‘FIRST BRING YOUR OWN BOOZE’ MUSIC VENUE IS OPENING IN MANCHESTER

Taking grass roots to whole new levels, a new Manchester music venue is set to open with a ‘bring your own’ policy.

@xlrmanchester will open up on Wilmslow Road in Withington, a few doors down from the newly relocated @cafeblah and across the road from veteran South Manchester venue @fuelcafebar.

XLR, run by promoter Chris Hindle, is set to open on 24 September, and will charge on the door - from £10 to £20 depending on what’s on - in lieu of a more standard ‘corkage’ situation.

While the venue will be licensed to sell drinks over the bar, customers will also be able to choose to bring their own, with lockers provided to store your drinks over the evening, and a no backpacks or glass policy.

It’s said to be the first of its kind in the UK.

The 200-capacity venue will be open from 10pm to 2am Tuesdays to Saturdays, and will boast a Funktion One soundsystem.

Confirmed events in the pipeline will include sets from British Punjabi and South Asian music scene icon Yung Singh and Bushbaby, of Brighton bass collective Southpoint.
