No stone left unturned.

Sometimes the quality of a restoration depends on the depth of the investigation. That’s exactly the case in our latest update, where we take a closer look at the fuel management system of our 1989 Speedster and the importance of returning it to the way it was when the car first left the factory.

As it turns out, our ECU specialist not only confirmed the computer is now programmed to original factory specification, but also repaired loose connections and thoroughly tested all fuel and ignition control functions to ensure everything is operating as intended.

This 2026 Porsche 911 GT3 with Weissach Package is finished in Paint to Sample Ultraviolet — a color that first debuted in 2015 on the 991.1 GT3 RS as one of its four launch colors.

Seeing Ultraviolet return a little over a decade later feels like a full circle moment and looks perfectly at home on the latest GT3.

This example is currently available at Porsche Burlingame.

For 2026, Porsche Burlingame enters the Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge with a 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster.

This car has spent its life enjoyed right in our backyard, driven throughout the East Bay.

Our goal is to return the Speedster to how it left the factory in 1989. The work will emphasize factory correctness, balance, and long-term usability.

A car like this deserves to be experienced on the road, not just admired at a standstill.

We’ll be putting the full weight of Porsche Burlingame behind this project and working throughout the year as we prepare to present the car in Monterey this August. Follow along as we share progress and key milestones along the way.

When we acquired the car, it still wore its original 1989 Fuchs wheels, but at some point they had been refinished with chromed barrels and gloss black centers. Not how they left the factory.

From new, these wheels should have a satin anodized barrel and a satin black center.

Rather than purchase a new reproduction set, we felt it was important to preserve the factory 89 stamped wheels that came with this car and return them to their correct finish. It’s a longer, more involved process to properly de-chrome and refinish them, but maintaining originality, especially on details like this, matters.

Once we receive the wheels back from refinishing, we’ll walk through the process in more detail and share a proper before and after.

The Speedster is in pieces and every detail is under review as we move through the next phase of restoration.

Stay tuned for updates as key components start taking shape — and tomorrow we’ll kick off a 4-part series diving deeper into what we’re focusing on.

This week, we took a field trip to European Collision Center to catch up with Dennis and see the next major chapter in our 1989 Speedster restoration unfold.

After carefully stripping the car down, we were thrilled to find that it did not require extensive metal work. Aside from a few minor blemishes, the body was remarkably clean—a testament to how well this Speedster has been preserved over the last 37 years.

Any exposed metal was treated with epoxy primer before the body received its next rounds of primer and blocking. Now comes one of the most important parts of the process: patience. The body will spend over a week curing before paint is applied, allowing solvents to fully escape and minimizing the risk of shrinkage, ensuring the final finish remains as smooth and stable as possible for years to come.

With less than two months until the curtain is lifted, it’s exciting to see these major milestones being completed. Every step brings us closer to seeing this Speedster wear black once again—just as it did in the summer of 1989.

The interior is officially torn apart.
Seats are out being reupholstered, and we’ve been tracking down the details that make these cars feel right again — OEM radio, correct shift boot, and an original 4 spoke steering wheel.

We’ve also started sorting through some of the wiring behind the dash. At some point aftermarket speakers and audio equipment seem to have complicated things a bit more than necessary, so part of the process now is carefully undoing those changes and bringing everything back to as close to original as possible. That’s the priority with this car.

Funny enough, these wheels were swapped out on a lot of cars back in the day. Some people just didn’t like them. Now they’re getting harder to find and values keep climbing.

We’ve always liked the look. If it was good enough for the 959, it’s good enough for our Speedster.

More to come. #PorscheChallenge26

The clutch we removed from our Speedster appears to be the original rubber-centered unit it left the factory with. On these late G-body G50 cars, that style of clutch was used to help smooth out driveline engagement and keep things a little more refined.

The downside is that rubber does not always age gracefully, especially living next to an air-cooled flat-six. Over time, heat and age can cause the rubber center to crack, harden, or start breaking down, even if the clutch still seems to be working fine.

So while we’re trying to preserve originality wherever it makes sense, this is one of those areas where the right move is also the smarter mechanical move.

In its place, we’re installing the current Sachs spring-centered replacement clutch used for these cars today. It keeps the car true to its factory character, but replaces the original rubber damper with a more durable spring-hub design.

We believe this is the kind of detail that separates a cosmetically focused restoration from one that respects the next driver lucky enough to rack up even more miles on this car.

Much of April was spent deep in the engine — continuing the “no stone unturned” approach from last month. Full teardown, careful inspection, and making the call on anything that showed wear or simply made sense to address while we’re here. Rod bearings, seals, and the small things that matter just as much as the big ones.

Now it’s coming back together clean, correct, and as close to factory as possible. Maybe not quite “eat off it” clean, but we’re getting there.

With the engine coming back together, our focus now starts to shift toward paint and finishes as the next phase takes shape.

A last-second change of plans turned into one of our favorite Speedster updates yet.

After getting the car back from paint, installing the freshly rebuilt engine, and seeing the restored Fuchs wheels back on for the first time, the Speedster was finally starting to look like itself again. The interior still had a long way to go, but the progress felt too good not to share.

We typically bring two finished Porsches to the Hillsborough Concours, but this year we decided to show the project right where it was. A half-finished restoration at a concours d’elegance felt a little unusual at first, surrounded by pristine, completed cars, but the response was better than we could have hoped for.

So many people understood the stage the car was in because they had been there before with their own projects — waiting on parts, chasing details, and pushing through that “almost there” phase.

The questions, advice, encouragement, and well wishes were exactly the pick-me-up we needed before the final push.

Next stop: Monterey in August. #PorscheChallenge26
