I think I’ve only ever had one real hero in my life: Terry Fox. This week I’ve been reflecting on my race, but also missing out on the Terry Fox runs back home that I’d usually be out to support.

I’ve taken so much inspiration from Terry. His dedication, his humility, and his desire to use his story & passion to do good in the community are just a few of his traits that I try to emulate in my own journey.

These are all chronic traits but in a moment last Saturday morning, on the streets of Tokyo, it was Terry’s strength of will that I needed most.

It was a trait I wasn’t sure I had.

But like Terry, I simply had to try. 1 step, then 100 steps, then 1000 steps.

I’ve learned a lot about myself this week. I’ve learned that I’m so much stronger than I think I am. I’ve learned that the thing about the Gold medal that brings me the most joy is seeing the joy it brings others when I ask if I can put it around their neck. And I’ve learned that 30 odd years ago I chose the best hero imaginable.

Thank You Terry for teaching me what it means to be Canadian, for showing me the power our dreams have, and for teaching me that we all have tremendous strength.

And thank you to @terryfoxfoundation for the amazing work you do. Everyone should check out the ‘Finish It’ campaign (where this amazing audio is from) to learn more.

So, let’s talk about the aftermath (I.e part two in my long form story telling because I’m bad at social media).

I’m disappointed that I won’t be making it to the start line for the 20km on Saturday. We briefly held out hope of recovery but an MRI has confirmed the intense pain I’m in is a fairly bad tear.

I’m in the best shape of my life, I was focusing my training and preparations on the 20km and I wanted to prove myself so badly over the shorter distance after 4th and 5th place finishes at the last 2 Global Championships.

When I left Tokyo 4 years ago after winning 50km Bronze I thought my career was ostensibly over. The removal of the 50km meant I would never be competing for global medals again. I was making an exit strategy from the sport.

Then after a 6th place finish in the 35km in Eugene in 2022, and a promise that I would start ignoring my own self doubts and listening to everyone I care about’s belief in me, I won a Commonwealth Title over 10,000m.

I’ve tried to turn that belief into self belief and this year it was paying off. I was out for redemption after getting sick before Paris and unable to be at my best. I put so much into this season and to not get to complete it sucks.

But to put to rest the thoughts I always have that I’m a wimp, or that I can’t push through pain like others; that I pushed through 10min of racing on a wrecked hamstring to make a childhood dream come true is a consolation I am more than willing to live with.

While I won’t be racing, you better believe I’ll be out there cheering on my friends and teammates on Saturday.

Finally, thank you to the amazing staff at Juntendo University Hospital for taking amazing care of me!

Mixed emotions this week and it’s taken me a few days to find my voice with it all. Australia Day last year I kicked off my 2025 season with a North American record 38:08 over 10km. This year the goal was to avoid getting lapped…twice…

This has been by far the biggest injury I’ve ever had, and the hardest that training has ever been. For months not a single walk felt fun. I went from being on top of the world, to feeling like I’d forgotten how to do the only thing I’ve ever felt marginally competent at. I’d struggle through training with heart rates 30 beats higher than they’d been a couple months earlier and paces 45s/km slower than they felt.

My mind is wrestling with my body to unlock a movement pattern that is being deeply and unconsciously locked away, protecting a healing hamstring. For months I wondered if we made the right call not to go with surgery.

But it’s slowly been coming back together. One tiny piece at a time. I’m still locked in an inefficient movement pattern but it’s getting better. And a thin layer of fitness has emerged.

It would have been really easy to watch from the sidelines on Monday and save the ego bash for another day. But one thing I do well is show up, so I toed the line and I raced my race, the best I could.

41:12 admittedly isn’t going to get me very far, but it’s where I’m at. And thanks to a tactical race from the rest of the guys, they only lapped me once!

2025 was all about proving to myself that I could be THE best. I had a redemptive motivation after a bitterly disappointing Paris Olympics.

2026 is shaping up to be all about being MY best and putting the pieces back together, one by one. It’s about finding my stride, literally.

I’ve struggled with posting while injured but am going to try to push myself out of my comfort zone and be a bit more online as I continue to look for sponsorship. So stay tuned.

World. Champion.
What a wild thing to say. A moment I’ve dreamed of countless times but never imagined it quite like this. This was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I came into this race in the best shape of my life and I spent most of the race devastated that I couldn’t hold onto the leaders.

‘We knew it was classic Evan tactics, be patient and charge late. We never doubted you’. Well that makes one of us! For much of the race I thought I was going to be fighting for 4th at best. I had to convince myself that another 4th place finish was not only fine, but quite funny if it happened. I charged on, determined to do my best… whatever that was on the day.

Then with a little under 5km to go, as the athletes ahead of me overheated and slowed or caught the ire of the judges, I seemed to teleport myself into the lead.

And then the thoughts became short.

4km from the finish line, in first place, and moving away. I didn’t feel good, but I felt good enough. I was going to win.
Bell lap, 3km to go, missed my bottle and saved by a kind Brit, I was going to win.
2km to go, pop goes the hamstring! Agony. Can I even walk? Do I stop? Quick stretch. Okay keep going. I’m slowing. Can I hold on? Can I finish? Every step is excruciating. Please don’t let this be how it ends.
Dig deep. Deeper than ever before. Think of those willing you forward each and every step. Breathe. If I can make it 10 steps I can make it 2000.
Gritted teeth. A grimace? Smile? No one can ever tell. Round the last corner and see my gap is big. I can maybe do this. Refuse one flag - it’s too far away, if I take a flag now and lose I’ll be so embarrassed - apologize after.
See the stadium, grab a flag - say thank you after.
Enter the stadium. This is the longest 300m of my life.
Home stretch, see my family.
Now it’s maybe a smile.
Finish. Relief. Gold.

I have so much more to say about this race, the emotions that flooded in after relief, and the aftermath from a few days on. More to come.

Chasing my dreams has made me into a person I am truly proud of. My advice: dream big, chase that dream with passion, and find success in the process. Most importantly, enjoy the journey of transformation it takes you on.

Out on the race course we are battling against one another, but as soon as we cross the finish line and stop the watch we are there for one another. Sport at its best.

Hoping I can recover from this hamstring injury in time to chase a few finish lines in 2026.

I’ve been pretty quiet this year.

Going from the best form of my life back to square one has been hard. 10 months and counting trying to heal, rebuild strength, mechanics, confidence, speed, and fitness.

All of it masked by a new moniker, World Champion. But beneath the title I’ve been full of self-doubt. Not only questioning whether I can get back there, but deeper doubt creeping in around identity, and honestly… income and livelihood.

Four years ago my win at the Commonwealth Games jump started a career I thought was over after the removal of the 50km. It showed me that I could be competitive over the shorter distances and kept my dreams alive.

2 weeks ago I suffered a strain to my ‘good’ hamstring, which interrupted my final prep. I don’t really know where I am at tbh, but Tokyo taught me that I’m pretty resilient. So tomorrow evening when I line up I’ll be chasing some more Commonwealth magic, chasing an inkling that my best is still yet to come. I hope you’ll tune in.

A decade. 10 years since a race changed the course of my life. A race that opened so many new doors that led to new perspectives and new side journeys. A race that gave me a moment in time where I could point and say ‘look how much sport has allowed me to grow’.

I’ve spoken about that moment, what led up to it and what has transpired since to over 15,000 kids and counting. These days a lot of the kids weren’t even born yet.

But by far the coolest bit is that I’ve gotten to add another 10 years of moments growing and chasing after my childhood dream since. These days it’s a little unclear how much longer my body will allow me to chase those dreams on the track, so I’m working hard on being grateful for every new moment I get!

Cheers to the last ten, and the next ten!
