Is getting your nails done no longer the status symbol it was once?

A video by the influencer Valeria Lipovetsky recently went viral where she said she’s given up getting her nails done and since then there has been much discourse about whether not getting your nails done is a sign you’re truly “rich”, as it means your time is too valuable to waste in the salon every three weeks.

This is textbook countersignalling. When a status symbol becomes commonplace, the people at the top opt out to show they don’t need it.

The same thing happened with designer logos, even using fake tan. Now could it be happening with manicures?

An exploration of how we went from the Mad Men era to the marketing girlie trope. I had a lot of comments on my original post saying “what about mad men” so I thought I would do a little deep dive into how the perception of marketing as a profession has evolved over the years and the concept in sociology of occupational femminisation

I spoke about this the other day and lots of people agreed (and disagreed), so I thought I would do a deep dive into what’s happening and how the linguistic evolution of marketing roles we are currently witnessing compares to what happened in the 80s with software engineering.

Fresh food is becoming the new aesthetic of aspiration as a result of grocery prices becoming so high, but the rise of the fresh food aesthetic reminded me of the junk food aesthetic that was popularised in the 2010s.

The aesthetic of aspiration is always shaped by how the economy is performing. In the 2010s, junk food felt ironic because the economy was doing well. In the 2020s, groceries have got so expensive that the ability to eat fresh produce and make wholesome home cooked meals is genuinely a status symbol, and brands are using the grocery aesthetic as a way to align themselves with a desirable lifestyle.

If I was launching a brand for Jacob Elordi, this is what I’d do (all thirst trap complications observed purely for professional research purposes)

There is a Catholicism revival happening among Gen Z, supposedly the most atheist generation in history who were raised on astrology apps and tarot. On the surface it feels unexpected, but when we look at Catholic revivals from the past and the circumstances that led to them, it starts to make a lot of sense.

Being a party girl is now a high value skill, because we are in a community recession and whenever an asset becomes scarce, the people who can provide it become valuable.

Which is why brands are giving creators thousands of dollars just to throw a party, creators like CatGPT are building physical spaces for their community to hang out and one of the fastest growing YC startups last year was a platform that helps women make friends.

We’ve all heard the saying everyone wants a village but no-one wants to be a villager, getting people to actually show up anywhere is hard these days, so those who have the influence to pull a crowd and create a vibe have the ultimate leverage.

Because when AI can generate whatever content you choose, bots outnumber humans online, and the majority of what we see on the feed is just fake virality and consensus manufactured by a handful of marketing agencies.

A good vibe is the last credible form of social proof because its the one thing that’s impossible to fake.

Books have never been more prevalent in marketing, meanwhile our actual capacity for reading has never been lower. Reading is now becoming so rare that we’re seeing it increasingly being adopted by brands as a way to signal aspiration.

Gen Z Brown will be the next Millennial Grey, simply because that’s how design trend cycles work and “timeless” is a marketing tactic designed to get us to spend more. This is just a reminder to buy what you love, and not because you think it’s timeless!

Paloma Wool is a multi-million dollar brand worn by every celebrity it-girl, but the brand’s growth has come from doing the complete opposite of what most brands do. The founder Paloma Lanna has used intimacy as a strategy to build a cult following, keeping things intentionally small and considered, resisting the pull of celebrity influencers, splashy collabs, because she knows it would break the spell around her brand.

Brands are investing more than ever in IRL events, but how do you host one that people will remember?

I just got back from Cannes Lions and while I was there I went to a house party hosted by @stanforcreators and @jtbarnett which had all the core elements of a great party.

Huge congrats to everyone from the Stan team who brought the best vibes @minasisley @lainabooth & more!!

Has anyone else noticed how the language in marketing job descriptions is changing? “Narrative engineer”, “GTM engineer” are the hottest new marketing roles apparently. BTW obviously I’m being facetious + this is based on my own experience but I know I’m not the only one feeling this way

Influencer squad are the new YouTube houses. Remember that craze of the 2010s? Most of them ended in lawsuits, but they proved that groups pull more views. Now we’re seeing a new model emerge, minus the toxic living arrangements. @4inthe5 launched their shared account a month ago and already have 40k followers and have done partnerships with @nordstrom and @upwork. We’re about to see a lot more of this, @bran_flakezz even said if you’re thinking about becoming a creator now, do it with a group of friends.
