My eldest daughter HATES getting her face wet, so as soon as my son was born we started exposing him (he actually was born directly into water too 😜)

Now he LOVES jumping into the water, splashing, and dunking himself. He had the BIGGEST smile on his face when he comes up and did this 30+ times every time we swim💦

I found a lot of good early exposure ideas over at @superheroswimacademy

You just had a baby…
You’re running on zero sleep…

And suddenly people are asking you questions like…
“Ready to do this?”

And you’re like WAIT… what are my options?

Here are some of the decisions you may be asked to make in the first 24–48 hours after having your baby so you know exactly what to expect:

Vitamin K Shot:
Given shortly after birth to help with blood clotting — some parents choose alternatives or decline.

Eye Ointment:
Antibiotic ointment placed in baby’s eyes after birth to prevent infections that can be passed during delivery.
If a mom has been tested and is low risk, some parents choose to skip this to avoid unnecessary medication.

Hep B 💉:
Typically done within the first 24 hours to protect against hepatitis B. Some parents choose to delay or decline, so educating yourself ahead of time is important.

Cord Clamping:
In hospitals, cord clamping is typically done immediately unless requested to delay.
Some mothers choose delayed clamping to allow more blood, iron, and nutrients to transfer from the placenta to the baby.

First Bath:
Hospitals often offer a bath on day one or two.
Some parents delay to keep the vernix (a natural protective layer) intact longer to help protect baby’s skin barrier.

Circumcision:
The surgical removal of foreskin for boys typically happens within the first 48 hours of birth.
This used to be standard practice in the U.S., but rates are decreasing.

Visitors:
Deciding who meets baby and when — and what boundaries you want in place.
Some parents delay visitors to focus on recovery, bonding, and reducing exposure to illness.

Feeding Baby:
Deciding how you want to approach feeding ahead of time can make those first few days feel a lot less overwhelming.

The first 48 hours after having a baby are no joke…

Save this so you feel a little more prepared 🤍

And if this helped you, follow along — I share the real, unfiltered side of motherhood + things I wish I knew sooner

It’s been 2 weeks of me doing this 🫠

There was a big storm and a tree fell on our car and damaged it but insurance is taking forever so we’re driving around like normal but the passenger car door doesn’t open all the way so I have to slide out like this 😅

This was one of the coolest parts of labor for me- especially watching it back and realizing how instinctual everything was.

In the middle of labor, I suddenly had this overwhelming urge to get down on my hands and knees. No one told me to do it- my body just knew.

As soon as I was on my hands and knees, I realized how uncomfortable the bathroom floor was so I stood up, walked to the birthing tub and proceeded to start pushing.

Shortly after, I was holding my baby in my arms.

If you let it, birth has a way of letting your body just take over.

If you’re preparing for birth and want to feel more informed and empowered, I put together a free birth guide with things I wish I knew before labor, postpartum prep, mindset tips, and more.

Comment BIRTH & I’ll send it to you 🖤 (be sure your following or you won’t see the message!)

I’ll continue to share this birth story over and over and over again because the idea of birth to a new mom can be so scary but as a mom who’s had two unmedicated births, I just want to let you know that birth can also be beautiful.

A lot of people are shocked that while I have 250,000 friends here on Instagram I have a heck of a time making friends in real life. 😆

I’m a pretty shy person and it takes me a while to start a conversation, or open up to somebody.

Anyone else like this?? Give me all your tips for making mom friends! 👇

We immediately were reminded to talk to our own kids (and spouse) about a safety plan.

It is SO important to not only know exactly how you would react as a parent but the more you can “role play” with your child and talk about it- the better they will do in a scary situation like this.

But also, can someone explain to me why the airport didn’t make a huge deal out of this???

In 2019 alone, there were 11,521 ED visits by children for furniture or TV tip-overs. That’s roughly one child every 46 minutes.

Comment SAFE & I’ll send you the link to these damage free anchors and some of my other baby proofing favorites! *be sure your following me!

Anchoring furniture is a non-negotiable in my book and these make it SO easy! (Even the awkward pieces of furniture)

I didn’t realize how many decisions came with labor… until I actually looked into it.

Here are some things you may be asked about during labor (especially in a hospital setting) that are worth understanding ahead of time:

Labor Positioning
Providers may suggest different positions to make it easier to assist — but you can choose what feels most comfortable and natural. (Yes, you can say no to lying on your back.)

Episiotomy
Used to speed up delivery, but research shows natural tearing often heals better and is less severe.

Eating & Drinking
Some providers or hospital policies may not allow it, but labor is physically demanding — staying fueled and hydrated can help maintain energy.

Cervical Checks
Measure dilation and labor progress.
Some women choose to limit or decline since progress isn’t always linear — you can be dilated for days or weeks before active labor begins.

Pitocin
Used to induce or strengthen contractions.
It can help move labor along, but may also lead to more interventions. Some women choose to decline to let their body regulate contractions naturally.

Breaking Your Water
Sometimes used to speed up labor if it has stalled.
Others decline due to increased risk of infection and more intense contractions.

IV’s
Used for hydration and quick access if medication is needed.
Some women decline so they can move freely (which can make a BIG difference in labor).

Monitoring
Continuous monitoring is standard in many hospitals, especially with medicated births.
Some choose intermittent monitoring for more freedom of movement and fewer unnecessary interventions.

Epidurals
A very common form of pain management.
Some women decline to stay mobile, avoid risks, or have an unmedicated experience.

Induction
More common than ever. While sometimes medically necessary, some women choose to wait for spontaneous labor to avoid a cascade of interventions.
(You can always say no.)

And if you’re unsure in the moment, you can always ask:

→ Is this necessary right now?
→ What are my alternatives?
→ What happens if we wait?

You don’t have to decide everything right now…
but knowing your options ahead of time can make a HUGE difference 🤍
