In 2006, I had $3,000, no investors, and zero experience making shoes. People said my idea would bankrupt me. Today, it's worth $600 million.

I once heard that happiness comes down to just three things. Simple. Almost too simple. But the older I get, the more true it feels.

I numbed through tennis the same way Kevin Love numbed through basketball. My friends were at the movies on Friday night and I was at the park hitting against a wall until 10 o'clock at night. And somehow nobody thought that was a problem.

That is what Kevin and I unpacked in this episode of the No Magic Pill podcast. How the thing you love most can quietly become the thing you hide behind. For Kevin it was basketball. A safe haven where no matter what was going on at home, in his head, or in his relationships, he could step between those two lines and escape. A champion, a gold medalist, and one of the most accomplished players of his generation who spent years using the game not just as a career but as a way to avoid everything he wasn't ready to face.

The passion and the crutch can be the exact same thing. That was true for me. It was true for Kevin. And I think it's true for a lot more people than we realize.

What do you reach for when you don't want to feel something?

#2: You can have everything and still feel broken. When I sold TOMS, I had the money, the freedom everyone dreams about. Six months later, I couldn't get out of bed. I was planning to end my life.

Success isn't the same thing as being okay. Your mental health deserves the same attention as your goals.

We gave away 100 million pairs of shoes. And I still felt empty. Because I was tying my worth to what I achieved. And no amount of success can fill that void. Feeling enough starts on the inside, not on a résumé.

#1: Doing more won't make you feel enough. At 29, I thought achievement was the answer. If I just helped more people, gave away more shoes, made a bigger impact, then I'd finally feel worthy.

Today I’m 49. I started TOMS at 29.

Sold it at 43.

By 47 I was in the deepest depression of my life.

These aren’t 10 hacks.

They’re the things I wish I had understood before the résumé started mattering more than the soul.

I spent seven years in depression trying almost everything possible under the sun. And I realized one thing: there is no magic pill. And almost no one is talking about it.

When I fell into a deep depression after selling TOMS, I tried everything you can imagine, and along the way, I learned some big misconceptions about healing.

After seven years of depression and trying everything possible, I realized there is NO MAGIC PILL. I could not find a single podcast that talked honestly about what it actually feels like to struggle. So I built it.

No Magic Pill launches on 5/5, with Matthew McConaughey and Michael Pollan as my first two guests, and if you are stuck, anxious, or just trying to feel better, this one is for you.

Matthew McConaughey talked about the importance of spending time alone with yourself on No Magic Pill.

So last night I took myself to dinner. No distractions. Just me.
It was uncomfortable at first. And that is exactly the point.

We also get into loss, manhood, journaling, and how he rebuilt himself from the inside out after one of the darkest years of his life.

I think of these like the three legs of a stool. If one leg is missing—or ignored—the whole thing wobbles.

I was in Argentina when I saw kids running barefoot on dirt roads. Their feet were covered in cuts and sores. The problem was simple: they didn't have shoes. I came back to LA and couldn't stop thinking about them.

So I wrote down one idea in my journal: "For every pair of shoes we sell, we give one away." That was it. One for One. The entire business model in one sentence. And that's when the pushback started.
