Yohji Yamamoto is angry.

“Fashion has become a joke,” he says. “It’s all about money. The major companies of fashion, they’re like kids playing soccer, just running after the ball. They’re not thinking about their customers. I just think they have too much money, so they don’t need to work hard. Money is always floating on them.”

There’s little doubt the sharp downturn in demand for some of the world’s largest and most prestigious luxury houses is, in part, the product of what some analysts have called “greedflation” as brands sought to juice profits with punchy price hikes while under-delivering on creative innovation and quality.

But Yohji-san, as he is called out of respect by his team and the wider industry, is no stranger to tough times. “We were there before also,” he says, recalling his 2009 bankruptcy and restructuring. “So now I’m focused on making my company small but strong.”

A survivor who succeeded by going against the grain with the label he founded more than four decades ago, Yamamoto’s creative energy has long sprung from anger and frustration. In the early years, the loss of his father during World War II when he was only two years old was the main source of his fury, but these days he’s equally upset about the state of fashion — and the wider world.

Founder and Editor in Chief @imranamed sat down with Yamamoto at his Tokyo headquarters for a #BoF500 cover story to discuss the future of his company, of fashion and of a planet roiled by wars and climate disasters. Read the full interview #linkinbio

Giorgio Armani, whose single-minded pursuit of an aesthetic ideal led him to become the richest designer in the world, and the sole owner of what was for many years the most successful fashion company in Italy, has died.

For five decades, Armani, a one-time window dresser turned self-made industrialist, towered over the Milanese fashion world as he crafted a multibillion-dollar empire of luxury apparel, accessories, fragrances, makeup, furniture, hotels and restaurants. His signature stripped-down, soft tailoring was widely credited for having redefined the working wardrobe for both men and women in the 1980s, and his pioneering embrace of Hollywood made him a glamorous household name in America long before his peers acknowledged the value of red-carpet exposure.

In an industry where creative and commercial functions are rarely led by the same person, Armani, whose near-obsessive sense of control also extended to business matters, was the rare designer who simultaneously served as chairman and chief executive of his own company. For decades, the results were spectacular.

In today's market, cosmetics are largely a mass business, but growth can be found in the luxury sector as shoppers trade up to treat themselves.

The prestige tier is dominated by a mix of makeup artistry labels like MAC Cosmetics and Nars, designer labels like Chanel and Dior and legacy lines like Lancôme and Clinique. Each competes across cosmetic categories, from lipstick to complexion, and all rely on a mix of premium performance and beautiful branding to justify the splurge.

As one of the few fashion brands to command a billion-dollar beauty business, YSL has a shot at eclipsing the competition, if it can fine-tune its ambassador strategy, reinvest in its core categories and embrace digital platforms where makeup is increasingly being sold.

BoF's Brennan Kilbane (@brennankilbane) explores how YSL could win the designer makeup wars. Read the full story #linkinbio

“Valentino: Live a hundred years!” That was the fervent wish of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, the designer’s most famous client, in 1966.

He almost made it. Valentino Clemente Ludovico Garavani died today at the age of 93. He managed to outlive Jackie, and also his rivals Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld, with whom he was so often linked. Women’s Wear Daily had names for them all. Yves the King, Karl the Kaiser, Valentino the Chic. But the documentary that was released about him in 2008, the year he retired, bequeathed Valentino another, more enduring title: the Last Emperor. It was the perfect sobriquet for a man whose life had a distinctly imperial gloss, though he himself blanched at the notion. He thought Valentino hardly sounded like an emperor’s name.

And yet he lived like one. Grand collections of art and objets were housed in a selection of magnificent homes: a palazzo on the Piazza Mignanelli and a villa on the Appian Way in Rome; a 19th century mansion in London; a chalet in Gstaad; a penthouse in New York, and, just outside Paris, the Château de Wideville, once home to one of Louis XVII’s mistresses. Valentino’s 152-foot yacht the T.M.Blue One was a familiar sight around the Mediterranean in the summer.

Then there were the parties.
