AD juggling a full-time job and content can be overwhelming, to say the least. But @reMarkable Paper Pure has been the best for taking paper-like notes with zero distractions, so I can think clearly, brainstorm all my content ideas, and actually get stuff done. It syncs to my phone and laptop so I can bounce between corporate mode and creator mode on the go, without losing my mind to the digital noise!

It took me five years to learn what nobody tells you on day one. The office runs on rules no one writes down. Here are 8 unspoken rules of office politics: 1️⃣ Your work doesn’t speak for itself. You have to. Great work hidden in a folder doesn’t count. Share progress, communicate results, and make sure the right people know your name is behind it. 2️⃣ Not every battle is worth fighting. Save your energy for decisions that matter. Winning small fights just burns political capital you’ll need later. 3️⃣ Likability is a career asset. You don’t have to be everyone’s friend, but people promote the people they actually enjoy working with. Competent and cold only gets you so far. 4️⃣ Your manager’s priorities are your priorities. Disagree privately. Align publicly. Fighting your manager in front of others doesn’t make you principled. It makes you look uncoachable. 5️⃣ Email is a paper trail, not a conversation. Write every message like someone else will read it, because they will. 6️⃣ Who you eat lunch with matters. Relationships aren’t built in meetings. They’re built in the in-between moments. Build your network before you need it. 7️⃣ Silence is a position. If you don’t speak up, people assume you agree or have nothing to add. Influence requires a voice. 8️⃣ Your reputation is built in rooms you’re not in. People talk. Make sure what they say about you helps your future, not your past. Office politics isn’t optional. Learn the rules or get left behind.

Some crazy sh*t I did to survive working 120+ hour weeks in investment banking. I wish these weren’t true, but the IB analysts days were so rough! 1. Took my work phone with me into the shower — answering urgent emails non-stop, even at 4am. 2. 3am ice-cold showers for pure shock therapy to jolt myself awake. 3. Blasted true crime podcasts to scare the sleep away; fear was my caffeine. 4. Snuck 20-min naps on my desk, under my desk, in bathroom stalls while waiting for comments. 5. Slept in my work clothes — no time for pajamas and needed any extra sleep. 6. Ate purely Uber Eats/DoorDash for every meal — if I even had time to eat. 7. Set 20+ alarms because when you crash, you'll sleep through literally everything!

Let’s step into the New Year with a refresher on basic banking etiquette on Wall Street, so you can stay ahead of your peers! 1. Under promise & over deliver. Always be clear about conflicting priorities and use upfront communication to your advantage!  2. Use “we,” not “I.” You should always reflect on the team’s efforts! For example, when sending revised materials around say “we incorporated your feedback” vs. “I worked through your feedback.” Albeit small, this verbiage ensures the entire deal team is bought in. 3. When sending an email to your entire deal team, always include emails in the “To:” line in order of seniority; the most senior MD should be the first email included, followed by Directors, VPs, Associates, and so on. This applies cross-teams, if you’re emailing partners in another group, always include their team in order of seniority as well. 4. Keep emails concise. Say what’s needed, clearly and efficiently — no unnecessary fluff. If ever addressing multiple pieces of information, use bullets. 5. When sending materials, always send PDFs (unless specifically requested otherwise by a senior banker). Avoid sharing editable Excel or PowerPoint files. 6. Always “version up” when working on materials by incorporating the latest version number in the title of the PowerPoint and/or Excel file (i.e. [Materials] v6 → [Materials] v7), and finalize materials with “vF.” Only circulate final versions externally (leave out the version number or any internal naming). 7. Spell check (using F7 key) and always proofread before sending any materials internally or externally to clients. Small mistakes create big impressions. 8. Before responding to a client or senior bankers in another group, always align with your Associate/VP before doing so (or the entire deal team when appropriate). Senior bankers do not want to have to do damage control!

Being good at your job is not what gets you ahead. The people who rise are the ones who understand office politics and play it without ever looking like they are playing. Here is what they actually do that nobody talks about: 1️⃣ They never let people see them stressed. Staying calm when something goes wrong is rare, and people read it as control. The one who keeps their composure looks more senior than the one with the better point. 2️⃣ They make their boss look good, on purpose. Your manager decides who gets the credit. Make sure they are never caught off guard and always look prepared in front of their own boss. Help the person above you win and they pull you up with them. 3️⃣ They build relationships with the people whose opinions matter. The org chart tells you who has the title. It does not tell you whose opinion actually moves decisions. Build those relationships before you ever need anything. 4️⃣ They are friendly, but keep their personal life private. Being approachable is not the same as being available for every vent session and every bit of drama. The smartest people guard that line. 5️⃣ They stay out of the gossip. They know exactly what is going on, but they are never the source of it. The people trusted with real information are the ones who can keep their mouth shut. The hardest worker rarely wins. The one who understands how the room actually works does. The sooner you learn that, the faster you move!

Part 2 of the New Year refresher on basic banking etiquette on Wall Street, so you can stay ahead of your peers! 1. Check formatting and page numbers. Professional presentation matters. 2. Avoid slang or emojis in emails. Keep tone polished and professional at all times. 3. Respond promptly. Even a brief “confirming receipt” acknowledgment shows reliability. Try to respond within 20 minutes for every email. 4. When emailing a client externally, as a junior banker you should always double check with senior members of your team before replying. Often more senior members will reply directly to c-suite executives rather than analysts. 5. Always join calls early and mute when not speaking. Be ready before senior bankers or clients log in, and prevent background noise during meetings (also be sure you know whether or not you should be on camera if the meeting is a Zoom).  6. Take notes on calls always and circulate to the full team right after. 7. Do your homework before asking for help. It’s okay to ask questions, but make sure you have asked other team members, googled and tried yourself, or looked around for a precedent before asking for help on something you could have solved by yourself (resourcefulness is key!) 8. Remember to breathe and stay calm under pressure. Maintain composure and positive attitude during long working hours will make you have a lasting positive impression on your peers.

As someone who has spent the past 5+ years working on Wall Street and living in Excel, these are the basic Excel shortcuts you need to know to be successful! 1. ‘Ctrl + B’ toggles bold. ‘Ctrl + I’ toggles italic. ‘Ctrl + U’ toggles underline. Quick way to apply aesthetic formatting to numbers and words. 2. ‘Ctrl + 1’ to format cells including number, currency, date, percentage, and more formats.  3. ‘Alt + =’ to sum a range of consecutive values. 4. ‘Alt + E + S’ opens ‘Paste Special’:  ‘Alt + E + S + F’ pastes only the formulas. ‘Alt + E + S + V’ pastes only the values. ‘Alt + E + S + T’ pastes only the formats.  5. ‘Ctrl + S’ to save your file — it’s important to regularly do this and ensure that you don’t lose work to Excel crashes! 6. ‘F12’ opens the ‘Save As’ bar to easily navigate within the drive + save versions.  7. ‘F2’ opens a cell so that you can edit the values, formulas, and more. I hope this helps 💗
