Don’t hate us for this (very) controversial opinion… but we probably wouldn’t go back to Lake Como. 😬🇮🇹
Before everyone comes after us… hear us out. 😂
Compared to the other places we’ve visited in Italy, Lake Como just didn’t wow us the way we expected it to.
For us, it felt:
• Very expensive 💸
• Surprisingly difficult to get around 🚤
• We waited in long lines at 6am to buy ferry tickets 🎟️
• We spent way too much time waiting for ferries, buses, and taxis, only to find out they were already full ⏳
• Getting from town to town was much more time-consuming than we expected
• More about relaxing than exploring 🌿
We know this opinion won’t be popular. We just wish someone had been honest with us about the logistics before we planned our trip.
Would we tell you to skip it completely? No.
If it’s your dream destination, go. You may absolutely love it. 😍
But if you’re visiting Italy for the first time and only have 10–14 days, we’d probably recommend places like Rome, Florence, Milan, or the Amalfi Coast before Lake Como.
The views are unforgettable… but for us, once was enough. 🫠

What we wish we knew before our Lake Como trip 🇮🇹

🌟 Lake Como is easily accessible from Milan. You can take a train from Milan to Como, which takes about an hour
🌟 Plan extra travel time — transportation around Lake Como can be slower and more complicated than it looks online
🌟 Ferries can get EXTREMELY crowded, especially in summer
🌟 You can’t just show up and expect to get on a ferry right away
🌟 Buy ferry tickets as early as possible because they’re first come, first serve
🌟 Even with a ferry ticket, overcrowding can happen and you still may have to wait for the next boat
🌟 Long ferry lines are very common in Bellagio, Varenna, and Menaggio during peak season
🌟 Don’t skip Bellagio
🌟 Visit Villa del Balbianello in Lenno — one of the most beautiful villas on Lake Como
🌟 Rent your own boat - you don’t need a license
🌟 Enjoy the views from Punta Spartivento
🌟 Must go to Via Serbelloni, the most famous street in Bellagio
🌟 Take the funicular to Brunate for panoramic views
🌟 Visit the Como Duomo
🌟 The towns have lots of hills, stairs, cobblestone streets, and narrow walkways — comfortable shoes are a MUST
🌟 Summer in Lake Como is beautiful but VERY busy, especially from June–September
🌟 If possible, stay a few nights instead of trying to do everything as a day trip

Not every place we travel to we’re going to love—and that’s ok! What might be your favorite place may not live up to the hype for someone else. So here are 3 popular destinations we personally wouldn’t rush back to (and why):
📍 Costa Rica 🇨🇷 — Absolutely beautiful, but for us, the experience didn’t quite match the hype. Getting around took a lot of time and overall we’ve visited other tropical destinations we enjoyed more.
📍 Lake Como, Italy 🇮🇹 — This one might get us in trouble 😂 It’s obviously stunning, but it felt extremely crowded and expensive, and transportation took forever and was so frustrating. We loved seeing it once, but there are other parts of Italy we’d rather see again.
📍 Monaco 🇲🇨 — Definitely worth seeing once but too flashy for us. It didn’t have the same charm for us as the French Riviera towns.
Of course, travel is SO subjective. Who knows, these 3 places could be your favorite locations in the world and we love that for you ❤️
