AD Last week I was invited to the Macmillan Open House💚A space created with Black and South Asian communities to talk openly about cancer, culture and everything we don’t always say out loud. Walking in felt like home. The familiar colours, the set, the little cultural details. It made the conversations feel safe, honest and deeply needed. Many of you know my husband’s cancer journey changed our lives. And as a Black Caribbean family, navigating the system wasn’t always easy. There’s fear, mistrust, silence and sometimes that silence costs us. That’s why this event meant so much. The vulnerability. The storytelling. For Jess, life before cancer was full, busy and grounded in family. But for a couple of years, she was also living with persistent abdominal pain. Despite repeated attempts to seek help, her worries were often dismissed. In September 2022, a colonoscopy finally revealed the cause: a 10cm tumour in her colon. A month later, Jess was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer that had spread to her lung. The long-term impact of treatment has been life-changing. Jess now lives with a stoma bag and the lasting effects of major surgery. Jess spent the day with street artist @wee.nuls, sharing her cancer experience, the challenges she has faced and how she’s encouraging others to advocate for their health. After hearing Jess’s story, Nuala created an incredible piece of artwork reflecting the resilience and positivity Jess carries forward in her life. Cancer is the biggest challenge many people will ever face. It can change everything - your body, your relationships, your work, your finances and the future you imagined. His Majesty met staff and patients including local people with lived experience of cancer who contributed to the centre’s design. 🌹 The King also planted a rose in the garden, a new calm space created for visitors to enjoy nature during their time at the centre.

Christine was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer back in June 2021. Although her initial prognosis was three to six months, she lived with cancer for three and a half years. Before she died in November 2024, Christine wrote this poem, read here by her daughter, Annabelle. "I think Hijacked beautifully captures mum’s journey with cancer, and it also doesn’t shy away from the brutality of it either; the betrayal she felt with her own body, then the acceptance, coming to terms with her diagnosis, and making the most of everyday." "My mum was very active and played lots of tennis, golf and swimming. She carried on doing these as often as possible. But when she was feeling tired from chemo, she took up art to fill her time. She loved it and was really talented - quickly doing custom pieces for her friends." "Mum was kept awake one night with the verses of this poem playing in her head. She said she needed to get it written down there and then, so this was all written on her phone at about two in the morning. Later on at breakfast the same day, she read it to me for the first time; she has only tweaked one or two bits since that first draft.” "This poem is a constant reminder of how amazing mum's attitude was throughout her journey with cancer, and we all believe that this, as well as her strong mindset were a big part of how well she lived after diagnosis."
