PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD IS NOW CLOSED ❌

We have 11 days left. Can we make it to 100k?!

The Roadless Rule isn’t a “lock up the land” policy. It’s not just a bunch of land that’s arbitrarily “off limits.” No, it ensures our forests are protected and continue to work for us. This rule has protected 58+ million acres of national forests in the United States (nearly 30% of our total national forest land) from reckless road-building and large-scale logging since 2001.

These lands filter drinking water for 180 million Americans, provide habitat for countless species, act as some of our most powerful carbon sinks, and anchor outdoor recreation economies that sustain communities nationwide. It’s been one of the most popular and most successful environmental regulations in the United States for more than two decades.

😤 But right now, those protections are at risk. The USDA has opened a fast-tracked process to repeal the Roadless Rule, beginning with a short 21-day comment window that ends September 19, 2025. It’s the first step in a longer process, but what we say now matters. Agencies are legally required to read and respond to substantive public comments, and history shows that strong, thoughtful input can change outcomes.

🚨HOW TO LEAVE A COMMENT: Click the link in my bio OR go to Regulations.gov and search for Docket FS-2025-0001-0001.

🗓️ Deadline: September 19, 2025

‼️ It’s not just a numbers game. The substance of your comment matters.

- Be personal: Share who you are and why roadless forests matter to you.
- Be specific: Point to impacts (wildlife, wildfire, water, recreation, Indigenous use).
- Use evidence: Cite data, research, or local knowledge.
- Offer alternatives: Suggest better solutions instead of just opposing repeal.
- Keep it respectful and clear. Derogatory comments or ones with profanity will be discarded.
- substance matters more than length.

All of my source are linked in my blog post about this, linked in my bio.

NOTE: I am not being paid or incentivized to post about this.

📣 Public Lands Update: The Sell-Off Isn’t Over

✅ The original provision that would’ve sold off up to 3 million acres of public land was removed from the Senate’s draft budget in national Forest were taken off the table. That happened because thousands of people spoke up.

🚨 But here’s what’s been added:
Senator Mike Lee will now focus on BLM lands within 5 miles of undefined “population centers” with a required sale of up to 1.2 million acres. These are some of the most accessible and visited public lands in the country.

🛑 This is still a direct threat to public land access, wildlife habitat, and Indigenous cultural sites. It’s not a win yet—it’s a pivot. These lands are not for profit. They’re for everyone.
—
What You Can Do — everyone’s Senators will be voting so even if you don’t live in the west, you still get a voice

✅ Call your Senators — tell them to vote NO on any version of the budget that sells off BLM land // Use our updated call script in the slides!
✅ Email their offices — your voice on record matters // Use our updated written script in the slides!
✅ Share this post — especially if you’ve hiked, camped, or hunted on BLM land near your town
✅ Tell your story — post your story with #mypubliclandsstory

💡MYTH vs. FACT: Public Lands Edition

Let’s set a few things straight - including words directly out of Mike Lee’s mouth. If you’re angry after reading this — good. Please note the vote can happen as early as today into the weekend or up until July 4 so don’t wait to call your senators.

What You Can Do:

✅ Call your Senators — tell them to vote NO on any version of the budget that sells off BLM land // Use the updated call script in the slides!

Everyone, in every state, can stand against this. If you don’t have threatened lands in your state but want to visit these places, this is how you keep them safe. Every single Senator has to vote on whether or not to sell these lands off. Your voice matters, and it’s worth making the call.

✅ Email your Senators— I have a script included you can use
✅ Share with family and friends
✅ Tell your story — post your story with #mypubliclandsstory

This is Part 1 in a series highlighting trails and viewpoints at risk of being sold off to private interests. Stay tuned and follow @ashley.goes.hiking and @hello_mallory for a full series of affected trails and views across Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

Senator Mike Lee of Utah wants to sell YOUR public lands—and unless your senators vote no, they’re all playing Realtor too. His amendment to the “Big Beautiful Bill” would sell off up to 3.3 million acres of Forest Service and BLM land.

These aren’t just empty plots. We’re talking about places like Cathedral Rock (AZ), Artist Point (WA), Sparks Lake (OR), Convict Lake (CA), Big, Little, and Millcreek Canyons (UT), and Ice Lake (CO). Once sold, these iconic spots are gone for good.

🚨 To clarify some numbers being thrown around out there — There are 250 million acres at risk of BLM and USFS land. Of the land at risk, 0.5-0.75% must be sold in the bill, which equals around 2-3.3 million acres sold.

📣A HUGE UPDATE📣

The Senate Parliamentarian ruled the plan to sell millions of acres of public lands would violate the Byrd Rule if left in the “Big Beautiful Bill”.

The Byrd Rule prohibits provisions considered “extraneous” to the federal budget in budget reconciliation bills.

Minutes before the Parliamentarian’s decision regarding the Byrd Rule was released, Mike Lee, who introduced the public lands sell off tweeted:

“here’s what I plan to do:

1. REMOVE ALL Forest Service land. We are NOT selling off our forests.
2. SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE the amount of
BLM land in the bill. Only land WITHIN 5 MILES of population centers is eligible.”

While this is a HUGE win we need to keep the pressure on! That means continuing to call your representatives, posting about public lands, and letting everyone know that you support public lands in public hands!

As soon as we have updated maps we will let you know so we can determine which BLM land may still be at risk.

In the meantime, keep sharing your love and passion for public lands and letting your representatives know that public lands are NOT on the chopping block.

THANK YOU to everyone who has called, emailed, posted or protested for these lands.

TOGETHER we are stronger!

🚨 There’s a lot of misinformation going around about the public land sale—what’s included, how much land, and what it really means.

Let’s break it down clearly and simply. Misinformation devalues the lands currently at risk.
⸻

✅ What lands are included:
The land for sale is BLM and U.S. Forest Service land—including areas people hike, camp, fish, and hunt. Check out the link in my (@hello_mallory) bio for a direct link to see what lands are impacted.

🚫 What lands are excluded:
National Parks and Wilderness Areas are excluded—but that doesn’t mean your favorite trails are safe. This is very nuanced because adjacent land sold could definitely affect the protected land. But in short, this protected land is not for sale.

📉 How much will be sold:
The Senate bill allows up to 0.5% to 0.75% of total federal land to be sold off. This is a range of 2.1-3.3 million acres.

🧨 How much is at risk:
Over 250 million acres of “eligible” lands exist in the USFS and BLM umbrella. The 3.3 million acres would be chosen from THIS inventory.

⚠️ Why it matters:
Once it’s sold, it’s gone. You potentially can’t hike, camp, or explore land that’s been privatized.

What other questions do you have about what’s going on? Drop them below in the comments so we can crowd source and get you some answers. ⬇️

Taking a break from talking about the Big Beautiful Bill to talk about ANOTHER big threat to our national forests…🌲

Yesterday the USDA announced they are going to rescind the Roadless Rule🙅🏻‍♀️🛣️

Swipe through to learn more about what that means…➡️

The good news? This action is fraught with plenty of opportunities for legal challenges.⚖️

The bad news? The administration has made it clear that they’re going to try to use emergency powers to fast track logging projects, skirting environmental laws.🪵

While the law requires the USDA to publish notice and accept public comments, the press release they issued didn’t indicate if or when that’s going to happen.🤷🏻‍♀️

Stay tuned for more updates!🌲

Despite these protections, your public lands aren’t “locked up” and the Roadless Rule doesn’t prevent recreation. There are THOUSANDS upon thousands of recreational miles protected by the Roadless Rule. Those will be at risk if this rule is removed.

On top of that, the U.S. already has 386K+ miles of forest roads with a huge maintenance backlog of $8.4 billion, so how would they responsibly manage 58 million more acres of land while underfunded and understaffed? Spoiler alert: They won’t.

ℹ️ More info (and sources) in my pinned post and recent blog posts, linked in my bio.

🚨Take action TODAY: Leave your public comment supporting the preservation of the Roadless Rule. Click my username, then click the link in my bio OR go to Regulations.gov and search for Docket FS-2025-0001-0001.

🗓️ Deadline: September 19, 2025

🤔 But will my comment actually matter? YES! If it’s thoughtful! The USDA is required by law to consider public input before finalizing this repeal. That means your voice truly matters. Strong, evidence-based, and personal comments can shape what gets studied in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and can help protect these forests for future generations.

If you live in Colorado you know we’ve had an unseasonably warm December.🥵

We typically see temps in the 30/40s in GJ this time of year, but it’s been in the 50s all month and even got up into the 60s for a few days.😳

While I’m not a fan of the cold (and make at least one post mentioning it every year😂), I am concerned about the heat and lack of moisture.😟

My in-laws live at 9,500 ft., so they actually have some snow right now, but definitely not as much as past years.❄️

Things may turn around in the mountains over the next few months (hopefully!), but right now the snow water equivalent in every river basin in Colorado is alarmingly low.😥

There’s a lot of uncertainty at the moment (including around negotiations about the management of the Colorado River, which adds another layer of stress when it comes to water in the West), but it’s safe to say it doesn’t really feel a lot like Christmas right now!🌡️

‼️The public comment period to protect the Roadless Rule closes on September 19th!‼️

This is your last week to provide your thoughts and input to the USDA regarding their plan to rescind the Roadless Rule before they prepare a Draft Environmental Impact Statement.📝

I have an earlier post breaking down the process and what types of information to include in your comment!📣

The Roadless Rule isn’t just about preventing roads from being built or reconstructed (there are actually numerous exceptions for things like wildfire mitigation and public safety).🛣️

It’s really about preventing heedless development in some of our last remaining wild spaces. It’s about protecting watersheds, wildlife habitat, intact forests that provide vital ecosystem services, and recreation access, including over 40,000 miles of hiking trails.🌲

Remember, unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better, it’s not. So use your voice while you have the chance!🗣️

September is Public Lands Month! As we lead up to Public Lands Day on Sept. 27th, I wanted to use this moment to reflect on how this summer has felt like an endless marathon of defending our public lands. It’s been exhausting, yes, but it’s also been energizing to see what collective action can do.

From protesting the unfair treatment of park workers and national forest employees, to calling Mike Lee and our representatives non-stop until the massive public land sell-off was removed from the Big Beautiful Bill, we’ve seen the power of people, from all sides of the political spectrum, rising up to protect the places we love. Although nature is far from nonpartisan, it is our great unifier, and I think that’s beautiful.

But the work isn’t done. As summer closes and we head into fall and winter, our public lands need us now more than ever. Let’s keep the pedal to the metal.

Right now, the biggest fight is defending the Roadless Rule. Until September 19th, the public has the chance to leave comments and speak up against this attack on 58 million acres of protected national forest land.

Check out my other posts for more context on why this matters, and click the link in my bio to submit your comment today. Together, we can make sure our lands stay protected.

Action alert: tell the BLM you support the Public Lands Rule!✍🏼🏜️

The BLM is moving to rescind the Conservation and Landscape Health Rule (aka the Public Lands Rule), a policy that put conservation on equal footing with other land uses in management decisions.🥾

Contrary to what opponents of the rule believe, it does not prioritize conservation or take away from other uses, in fact considering the health of the land is critical to supporting other land uses, including recreation and grazing, longterm.🐄

Comments are being accepted through November 10th, so get yours in today!✍🏼

Hiking in a Park or on any public lands pays exquisite dividends in views and in joy!

Thank you @kate.outdoors for an Arches view! | Jumping for joy because I can finally enjoy the holidays after the most overwhelming month at work!✨ (🎄← the only Christmas tree I’ll be putting up this year😅)
✧
I know there are a lot of people struggling right now between the time of year and general state of the world, so I truly hope everyone has a healthy and happy holiday season, however you choose to celebrate!✨🎅🏼

Mini Cooper coming Spring 2026!✨💕🍼

This has been one of the hardest secrets to keep as someone who enjoys oversharing on the internet, so I’m very excited to finally announce that I’m pregnant!!🤰🏻

The past few months have been a whirlwind, but we could not be more excited to grow our little family!🥰

Hiking definitely looked a little different than usual this summer. We only did one big hike when I was 3 weeks (aka I wasn’t actually pregnant yet), before the first trimester symptoms came in hot.😅

Now that I’m officially in the second trimester I feel like myself again, but I definitely still prefer shorter hikes.🥾

I’m hoping to stay as active as possible throughout the pregnancy (both on + off the trail), and do my best to prepare to have a little outdoorsy beeb with us next summer!👶🏼❤️

We’ve got a major 💩 problem in the outdoors and not enough people are talking about it…

Improper human waste disposal is a massive problem on public lands across the West, and is polluting some of the most popular and iconic alpine lakes.😔

Learn what you can do to help prevent the issue from getting worse and how to protect yourself from polluted water sources in the backcountry!💦
