Tony’s in Houston is every bit as elegant and decadent as it has always been, plus unstoppable chef and co-owner Kate McLean has added a dose of her own brand of fun. You should go and see what she’s doing. I think Tony is very proud. It is still a must-visit Houston restaurant. #Houston #houstontx #houstonrestaurants #houstonfood #houstonfoodfinder

Welcome to a brief but much-needed respite at @Westin Mission Hills Villas in Palm Springs. It was a pretty long walk from our car to our apartment-like suite, but once we got there, we were so surprised at all it had to offer! We could’ve easily stayed for a week. It had its own washer and dryer (they even provided detergent, and we were very grateful to do some laundry), a full kitchen, a desk, a dining table, a bathroom with a magnifying mirror and a shower outfitted with both a rain shower and spray head, and a very comfy bed. Bonus was the ducks peacefully enjoying the man-made pond and the mountains in the distance. #PalmSprings #California #Hotels #Resorts #ExtendedStay

📰 Houston restaurant group DuckstacheHospitality has announced that it’s opening a fourth location of Handies Douzo in Central Park Post Oak, a redevelopment of the Post Oak Central campus at 2000 Post Oak. The restaurant is expected to open in late 2026. The group is led by chefs Patrick Pham and Daniel Lee and runs many local restaurants, including Kokoro, Doko, @Aiko and Himari. 🍣 The owners say that their restaurant group was the first that ever brought a handroll-focused bar to Texas. The other three Handies Douzo locations are in the Heights, Montrose and Spring Branch. The restaurant is known for serving hand rolls, sashimi and crudos, some of which feature fish such as masu (cherry salmon), maguro (tuna) and hotate (scallop). 🎨 The Post Oak location will offer 26 counter seats in a cozy 1,658-square-foot-space designed by @GinDesignGroup with a “moodier palette of inky tones, matte black finishes, and dark terrazzo”. Expect also the whimsical touch of the group’s ever-present rubber duckies. 📢 “We’re really intentional about the neighborhoods we choose and where we think Handies Douzo will feel like a natural fit,” said Lee via a press release. “Houston diners know what they like, and Uptown is such a vibrant, fast-growing area. Central Park Post Oak felt like the right match for our handroll experience and the way people in Houston live, work and dine.” 🏢 Clayton Freels, Executive Vice President at Midway, which is developing Central Park Post Oak, said, “Handies Douzo represents the kind of thoughtful, chef-driven hospitality we want at the heart of Central Park Post Oak. Patrick, Daniel, and the Duckstache team have built a loyal following across Houston, and we are thrilled to help them extend that experience to Uptown in a way that feels authentic to both the brand and the neighborhood.” ✍️@phaedracook 📸 Handies Duozo photos by @Studio Rivera 🖼️ Central Park Post Oak rendering by Boldrviz #Houston #HoustonNews #HoustonRestaurants #HoustonFood #HoustonBusiness

🤝 @TheHoustonianTX is my favorite place to recharge and regenerate — and restaurant TRIBUTE at The Houstonian is often where I ask friends, family and business associates to meet me for a meal. 👨🏽‍🍳 Not only are the surroundings beautiful and service impeccable, but the food is outstanding thanks to the powerhouse culinary team of director Neal Cox, executive chef Gonzalo Campos, chef de cuisine Jeff Boudreaux and chef de cuisine Roland Soza. Need a place for a power lunch? Maybe this will be your preferred place, too. Just don’t take my spot by the window. ;) 🚘 Pro tip: valet is available, but you can also self-park in the garage for free. Yes, free. 📰 As first reported by me for @Houston Food Finder: @AlamoDrafthouseHouston shuttered its location in La Centerra in Katy — the only one in the Greater Houston area. A call to the theater box office verified the closing, and Alamo Drafthouse has since posted a statement on its website. The final showings were on Saturday, February 7. ❓I asked to speak with the manager of the Katy location as well as emailed franchisee Triple Tap Ventures LLC requesting a statement on the closing. Should we receive additional information, we’ll update this post. 🎭 The closure marks the end of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema having a presence in Houston for decades. It first opened at West Oaks Mall in May 2003 and closed in June 2012 — a long and successful run hampered at the end by the diminishing stature of the mall. The opening was notable as the first cinema to operate as a dine-in theater, with servers bringing dishes and drinks right to guests in the auditorium. 📽️ A Mason Road location in Katy followed, then Alamo Drafthouse Cinema would opened a second in Vintage Park in far northwest Houston on February 13, 2013. However, by December 2016 and after only a three-and-a-half year run, the location was leased by competitor Star Cinema Grill. 💸 In July 2018, the La Centerra location debuted in a brand-new, custom-built facility, and it’s had nearly an eight-year run. However, there has been cause for concern over the past decade. Triple Tap Ventures LLC announced additional locations in Houston, Sugar Land and League City that never came to fruition. The COVID-19 pandemic was not kind to the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema chain, either, as it filed for bankruptcy in March 2021. 🌃 While the closing of the La Centerra location marks Alamo Drafthouse Cinema’s exit from the Greater Houston area, other Texas locations remain open in Austin, San Antonio, Dallas and other towns. ✍️ & 📸 @PhaedraCook (Photo is from the media preview of the La Centerra location right before it opened.) #HoustonNews #HoustonTheater #KatyTX #AlamoDrafthouse #HoustonMovieTheatre

In Coronado, California, on a peninsula just south of downtown San Diego across San Diego Bay, is the historic Village Theater. It opened in 1947 and closed in 2000 after falling into disrepair. It was meticulously restored by Vintage Cinemas and reopened in 2011. The features include three screens, an old-style concession stand, popcorn with real butter, lush hallway carpeting, red velvet screen curtains and hand-painted murals of the history and sights of Coronado, including Hotel Coronado and the downtown San Diego skyline, by by Disney artist Bill Anderson of Mural Makers. #MovieTheaters #Coronado #SanDiego #California #TravelDestinations

🍜 Had a chance to visit the combination restaurant concept Crawfish Café + Pho Prime — and I had a lot of fun. Pho Prime specializes in Vietnamese noodle soup with upscale meat options, such as the beef belly I had last night. You can also select Prime Add-Ons. I chose the bone marrow, initially. It wasn’t available so I got the oxtails instead and, wow, for an $8 add-on, these were huge! In addition to the namesake dish, Pho Prime also offers vermicelli bowls, banh mi and plated classics such as bò né (ribeye steak and eggs). 🦞 It’s crawfish season, so from Crawfish Café (which helped popularize Viet-Cajun cuisine in Houston) I selected Boil Combo 2, which comes with half a pound of crawfish, a big snow crab cluster, corn on the cob and a potato, in the Viet Cajun sauce. I shamelessly demolished it (that bib was necessary), and I thought the crawfish and snow crab were perfect to have together. Other seafood selections include shrimp, little neck clams and Gulf blue crab, just to name a few. I didn’t find the Viet Cajun sauce at the “spicy” heat level to be all that threatening, so my pro tip here is to ask for a side of extra-spicy or reaper sauce in case you want to add more excitement to your experience. 🍹My server was outstanding — truly attentive. He noticed that I wasn’t drinking my first cocktail, the Vietnamese Mojito (it was regrettably excessively sweet) and helped me find a suitable replacement. The New Orleans Lemonade, with Southern Comfort, rum, lemon and lime soda, was less sweet, more sturdy and more to my taste. 👯I had a blast, enjoyed very good food and would not only come back but bring friends to help me demolish one of Crawfish Café’s larger seafood selection. Or, if I was back on my own, I’d continue working my way through Pho Prime’s dishes — perhaps the rarely seen Pho Tom (shrimp in beef broth) next. #HoustonFood #HoustonRestaurants #HoustonVietnamese #VietnameseRestaurants #Houston

🧀 If you’re in the U.S. and hear the words “Swiss cheese,” what do you think of? It’s probably not cheese that’s actually made in Switzerland. The term has been co-opted and genericized. In 2024, the United States produced 334,969 million pounds of “Swiss cheese” (aka Emmenthaler), and Ohio is the largest producing state. 🇨🇭 There are several cheeses that are indeed produced in Switzerland — and they are worth seeking out. I had the great fortune to meet representatives of @LeGruyereAOO from Switzerland and learn about authentic Gruyère production at the @SpecialtyFoodAssociation’s Winter FancyFaire expo earlier this year. Here are some facts about Gruyère that you might not know: 🗓️ It’s named for the district of Switzerland where it was first produced in the year 1115. 🐄 Cows that produce the milk for Gruyère only eat fresh grass in the summer and hay in the winter. Supplements are not allowed. 📋 Like culturally significant foods and wines in other European countries, Gruyère made in certain areas of Switzerland can be eligible to be appellation d’origine protégée (AOP)-certified. The term means “protected designation of origin.” Wheels of Gruyère that are at least five months old are inspected to ensure they meet quality requirements. 🥇 In November 2025 at the World Cheese Awards in Bern, an 18-month Gruyère AOP Vorderfultigen Spezial was crowned “World Champion Cheese”, winning out against 5,244 others submitted from 46 countries. 😋 The more it’s aged, the more that Gruyère’s flavor intensifies — and the better the chance that it will have tasty, crunchy, protein crystals. In that regard, the flavor and texture of wheels aged from 18 to 24 months have much in common with aged Parmigiano-Reggiano, Gouda and cheddar. The mildest wheels are aged from 6 to 9 months, and the 10-month-old wheels are ideal for cheese lovers seeing a happy medium. 🤝 Thanks to Denis Kaser and Caroline Hostettler of the Gruyère AOP consortium for the samples and for taking the time to explain the requirements for producing this delectable cheese! Have you discovered “hidden in plain sight” #Houston Japanese restaurant @Hachi_Houston? 💁🏻‍♀️ Located at 5333 Westheimer near The Galleria at the corner of the Galleria Park II office building, Hachi specializes in a luxurious omakase experience. If you want your omakase to be heavily focused on nigiri and sashimi, this is the place to go! 🍣 We loved the omakase’s inclusion of flights of fish, seafood and uni comparing cuts from different parts of the world. 🐟To pair alongside, there’s an extensive collection of sake and Japanese whisky as well as cocktails. 🍶 Check out omakase or a la carté service at this hidden gem in Houston! #Houston #houstontx #houstonfoodfinder #japaneserestaurant

📸 I thoroughly enjoyed executive chef Antonette Wright’s dishes during my dinner at @citycellarshtx restaurant in the East River Houston development. If you haven’t been, you might want to go check it out. I gravitated towards the Southern- and soul-style dishes, but the full menu does have plenty of options if you’re looking for lighter fare. Photo 1: Sriracha Mac & Cheese Balls at City Cellars restaurant in Houston Photo 2: A very fine andouille and chicken gumbo Photo 3: It’s in dishes like this smothered chicken — a blackened chicken breast topped crawfish and andouille sauce and served with garlic mashed potatoes and chargrilled broccolini — where I think the heart of executive chef Antonette Wright shines through. 🍹Made a quick visit to Donna’s, the recently opened #Houston cocktail bar in The Heights that replaced The Ready Room. It’s from Bobby Heugel of Anvil Bar & Refuge fame and veteran bartender Jacki Schromm. (Was delightful to see Bobby for a bit.) 🎶 This music-centric bar with a reel-to-reel system was well-attended on a Thursday night, but there were still seats available. (If you want it quieter, you’ll want to visit earlier in the evening or perhaps Monday through Wednesday.) 🍸 The cocktail list is largely off-the-beaten path with selections such as Tuesday Breakdown with Irish whiskey, bitter vermouth and Fernet Branca Menta, and Diggity Daydreams with gin, grapefruit, lemon lavender and sage. Classics with a twist include the Jacki’s Martini with Plymouth gin, Dolin vermouth and Cocchi Americano and the Sloe Gin Fizz with sloe gin, grapefruit, lemon and soda. There are several patio tables for when the weather is accommodating (so maybe not this weekend). If you’re looking for a lively lounge, give it a try. (I don’t know what the pay phone is for, but I had to try. 😅) Video by @phaedracook. #HoustonHeights #HoustonBars

We had an absolutely amazing group of stunning, accomplished women from all walks of life at the @HoustonFoodFinder Sunday afternoon Merry Tea Time at The Marigold Club! 🫖 It was an honor to spend time with them and get to know them. More than one of us left lucrative positions to start our own businesses. 👸🏽 One runs a charitable arm of a major oil and gas company, and there was also the head of a luxury travel service, a retiree who loves going out and a professional matchmaker! 💘 Creating a place where people can get out and enjoy Houston’s top bars and restaurants, such as The Marigold Club, which was Michelin-recognized this year, is one of my favorite things. 🌼 My favorite parts were the tea service — our group tried three kinds — the Wagyu Pastrami tea sandwich (I could take down a full-sized one… rich and flavorful!), the mini scones (wonderful texture… some of the best I’ve ever had) and the little desserts. ☕️ 🥮 You can enjoy high tea at The Marigold Club Friday through Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Reservations are required. Thank you to the staff at The Marigold Club, owner/Master Sommelier @JuneRodil, and Bryan Gonzales and Sydney Prior of @GiantNoise for accommodating and helping coordinate our event. 🎉 ##Houston##HoustonTX##HoustonFood##HoustonRestaurants##HoustonBars

There is nothing better on a road trip than discovering a quality establishment that you never expected to find. Varraco Coffee Roasters is a Filipino coffee shop in Palm Desert (just southeast of Palm Springs about six miles from I-10). There’s an in-house roaster where the shop roasts coffee beans from the Philippines, and you’ll find treats on the menu such as Adobo Pandesal and a burrito that’s an homage to classic sisig with Kurobuta pork belly, liver pâté aioli, cage-free eggs, red onions, jalapeños and grass-fed cheddar. We loved our Brown Sugar and Panda Lattes, too. If you enjoy coffee and find yourself nearby, it’s a must-go place. #PalmSprings #PalmDesert #TheI10Project #RoadTrip #CoffeeShop

👨🏽‍🍳 Executive chef and owner Jose Hernandez of @BrasserieduParcHTX recently acquired and reopened @SavoirHouston in the Heights and has brought to it the sophisticated dishes for which he is known. 🍽️ At Savoir, diners can look forward to some of Hernandez’s outstanding signature dishes such as lamb tartare, 5-hour braised short ribs with seasonal vegetables and bordelaise over cauliflower purée and decadent Beef Cheeks Agnolotti with veal, demi glacé, mushrooms and truffle butter. 🍷While what’s on the plate feels like fine dining, Savoir’s atmosphere is relaxed and offers four settings: an easygoing bar, a patio, a brightly lit sunroom and a romantic dining room that’s perfect for date night. The space is also home to the seductive speakeasy Patton’s Steakhouse, a setting reminiscent of a dark Parisian club offering a full steakhouse menu as well as cocktails and an extensive wine list. 🥗 Back at Savoir, we also loved some of the dishes showcasing the bounty of spring, such as Apple Fennel Salad with manchego, walnuts and Jerez vinaigrette, wood-fired rainbow carrots with rosemary over dill yogurt and Caprece Tortellini with ricotta, buratta, goat cheese, cherry tomatoes and basil. 🧭 Those who have stayed in touch with the food scene over the years know Hernandez as one of Houston’s most-talented and versatile chefs. (I first met him as the pastry chef at Triniti — and he still makes breads and pastries!) Heights residents will now find in their midst a comfortable retreat with a well-executed yet reasonably priced menu to embrace, but Savoir is also a restaurant that should be a must-visit place for any Houstonian who values delectable, modern, European-influenced fare. #Houston #HoustonRestaurants #HoustonFoodie #HoustonChefs #HoustonHeights

🕵🏼‍♀️ Discover Cocktails Unknown, an intimate speakeasy inside of @CityCellarsHTX. It’s inspired by owner Daniel Wolfe’s travels around the world—and shaped by something deeper: a focus on mental health. 🪽From the artwork to the cocktails, the experience draws inspiration from icons like Robin Williams, Anthony Bourdain and Mac Miller, reminding us that even the brightest personalities have unseen struggles. 🍹Cocktails include the shimmering Genie’s Third Wish (inspired by Williams’ Genie character in Aladdin) with gin, blue curaçao, elderflower liqueur, and fresh squeezed lemon juice, and Over The Pass (inspired by Bourdain) with brisket fat-washed bourbon, Amaro Nonino, housemade demerara syrup and Angostura bitters. A bar food menu is also available and includes brisket ramen, lobster tacos and lamb hummus. 🤫 To enter, you’ll need to do something unexpected: visit the website at CocktailsUnknown.com and anonymously confess your deepest, darkest secret. 📺@FoodNetwork’s “The Ultimate Baking Championship”, a nine-episode series, is featuring a Houston pastry chef who works at one of the city’s top hotels. Executive pastry chef Oralia Perez of @PostOakUptown (The Post Oak Hotel) is among 16 competitors who hail from all over the country. The first episode will debut on Food Network at Monday, March 9 at 8 p.m. Central Time and streams the next day on @HBOMax and @DiscoveryPlus. ⭐️“The pastry chefs competing are the best of the best—they are true artists whose desserts are mind-blowingly beautiful and delicious,” said Betsy Ayala, Head of Content, Food at Warner Bros. Discovery via press release. “The Ultimate Baking Championship chefs elevate pastry technique and artistry to the highest level we’ve ever seen.” 🥇This is not Perez’s first appearance on Food Network. In 2023, she was a co-winner of “Elf on the Shelf: Sweet Showdown” with fellow pastry chef Henderson Gonzalez. The team won $25,000 and the title of, “Ambassadors of Confectionery Concoctions”. 🧑‍🍳The show will be hosted by Jesse Palmer of @BachelorABC (“The Bachelor”) franchise fame. Pastry chef and Food Network personality Duff Goldman is the lead judge and will be joined weekly by two additional judges, including luminaries in the field such as Jacques Torres, Molly Yeh and Amaury Guichon. 🥮Competitors will be tested on pastry chef skills, including laminated dough, sugar artistry, chocolate work and pâte à choux. For the first episode, they’ll be asked to create a dessert in their signature style that “tests one of the four tastes—sweet, salty, sour or bitter”. Those who get to the final challenge in the episode will then be asked to “create a dessert inspired by the roots of their baking journey”. The finale is May 4, and the winner will receive $50,000 and the title of “Ultimate Baking Champion”. Considering her previous win, it seems like Perez has a good chance of making it to the finale. ✍️@phaedracook 📸@FoodNetwork #HoustonNews #HoustonChefs #FoodNetwork #HoustonRestaurants #HoustonHotels

🍣 It took me long enough, but I finally made it to Hando’s Heights location, where they can turn something as basic as a spicy tuna roll into a sublime experience. 🐟 Houston is lucky to have some great-quality, affordable Japanese restaurants, and you should count Hando among them. The set of five hand rolls, which includes Spicy Tuna, Hamachi Poke, Blue Crab, Fried Oyster and Shrimp Katsu, is only $29 plus tax and gratuity and worth every time. 🍹This is also an outstanding place to drink cocktails. A few to consider on the current drink list are Next time, I hope to be able to visit the adjacent speakeasy, Kanpai Club. Last of the Oaxacans with mezcal, tequila, corn liqueur, guava and lime and the Hando Clarified Milk Punch with rum, mezcal, brandy, a house spice blend and citrus. 🤪Special guest appearances by @bitspitter and our son Nick. As you can tell from the video, we had a lot of fun dining at Hando. #HoustonRestaurants #HoustonFood #HoustonBars #HoustonJapanese #HoustonFoodie

Let’s make a quick stop into The Golden Hour Coffee & Tea! It was a cold and rainy day (not a dark and stormy night), and I was in dire need of an espresso drink. It was awesome to find this sophisticated coffee shop in The Woodlands. I got the namesake latte The Golden Hour, made with oat milk and a housemade honey, hazelnut and cinnamon syrup — and it really hit the spot on such a blustery day. (It’s available iced, too, if you prefer, and there’s also a variant that swaps in matcha for espresso.) Retail coffee beans that were available to buy included selections from local roaster @BlendinCoffeeClub in Sugar Land and from Maryland-based @CeremonyCoffeeRoasters — both highly respected roasters. If you enjoy coffee and you’re in search of a quality shop in The Woodlands, give The Golden Hour a try.

P.S. - The Golden Hour Bakery is next door to fulfill your breakfast pastry needs. #TheWoodlands #Conroe @Houston Food Finder
