A dream realized…

On October 15, 2025, @jimwmorrison completed the first ski descent of the Hornbein Couloir via the Super Direct route on Everest’s north face.

Reinhold Messner called this line “the most beautiful route on Everest”an elegant plumb line connecting the Japanese and Hornbein Couloirs, starting at 20,000 feet and climbing 9000ft to the summit. A climb and ski line that has captured imaginations for decades. A line that has never let anyone descend it.

My journey with this route began in 2003 with @stephen_koch. After two months contemplating those 9,000 vertical feet, we turned back at 7,000m. Attempting the north face of Everest changed me and left a deep impression. After years of consideration, I decided a decade ago that it wasn’t going to happen for me in this lifetime. When Jim and Hilaree approached me in 2020, ready to attempt what I’d thought impossible, I felt both dread and inevitability.

What Jim accomplished that day defies words. The stakes couldn’t have been higher - zero margin for error in the infinite calculus of decisions and each perfect turn after another. But this was never a solo effort—it was a masterclass in leadership and teamwork. Jim’s vision, resilience, and fortitude inspired everyone to rise to the challenge.

12 of us summited on the last day of our permit via a route that hadn’t been climbed in 30 years. Several previous attempts to climb, ski or snowboard the line ended in tragedy. I am grateful we all came home.

@estebantopomena and @robrtomorales fixed lines to the summit with relentless endurance and through brutal conditions. @carla.perez.ec carried the team’s spirit. Our Sherpa team’s dedication was profound. Selflessness, absolute trust, and unwavering belief, when all seemed lost, defined the ethos of the entire team.

To the production team: years of commitment to an impossible dream, thank you.

Jim, you are a true gem of a human being. Witnessing you achieve this seemingly impossible goal fills me with gratitude beyond expression. After six years and three expeditions, today, I can finally breathe easy.

We hope we did you proud Hilaree.

On October 15, 2025, @jimwmorrison completed the first ski descent of Mount Everest’s Hornbein Couloir—solving what elite ski mountaineers worldwide called "the last great problem."

Skiing down this 9,000-foot vertical line from Everest's summit at 29,032 feet, combined with the successful summit ascent, represents the most significant achievement in ski mountaineering history. The feat required five years of logistical planning, three expedition attempts, and a lifetime of preparation.

Academy Award-winning ‘Free Solo’ directors @chaivasarhelyi and @jimmychin captured Morrison’s grueling physical and emotional journey for the upcoming @natgeodocs film “Everest North” (working title).

After years of planning, mountaineer @jimwmorrison successfully skied down Mount Everest’s narrow Hornbein Couloir—notching an achievement that has captivated skiers and alpinists for decades.

At 12:45 p.m. local time Morrison reached Everest’s peak via the same route after six and a half weeks on the mountain and a grueling summit push. With him were 11 other climbers, including fixers, Sherpas and a film crew led by photographer and National Geographic Explorer @jimmychin. Chin and @chaivasarhelyi who won an Oscar for the 2018 film "Free Solo,” are directing a @natgeodocs film on Morrison's achievement.

After their summit photos, Morrison spread the ashes of his late partner Hilaree Nelson, who died almost exactly three years ago in a fall from near the summit of the world’s eighth highest peak, Manaslu. “I had a little conversation with her and felt like I could dedicate the whole day to her,” says Morrison.

The rest of the crew began the long, slow descent along the fixed lines. Morrison, however, clicked into his skis and spent the next four hours and five minutes carefully hop turning and carving the icy 50-degree slope that descends a staggering 12,000 vertical feet back to the Rongbuk Glacier.

Read more about this achievement at the link in bio. In these images:

Photo 1: Morrison trains in the shadow of Everest’s north face in 2024.

Photo 2: Jimmy Chin, right, summited Everest alongside Morrison, left, and then led a team of filmmakers to chronicle the descent for a forthcoming National Geographic documentary film.

Photo 3: For years, Morrison planned to ski the Hornbein Couloir with his life partner, Hilaree Nelson. But Nelson tragically passed away in September 2022. Nelson was also a National Geographic Explorer and the 2018 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year.

Photos 4 and 5: The vast majority of activity on Everest happens on the mountain’s southern flank. But the peak’s northern aspect, pictured here, receives less sunlight and holds snow longer, making it more desirable for skiers.

Hundreds of meters off the deck, @alexhonnold tackles the Boulder Problem, the crux of Freedrider (5.13a). @m_synnott and @mikeylikesrocks look on with bated breath. To become the first person to free solo El Capitan, Alex had to rely on microscopic holds, barely-there friction — and a lifetime of preparation.

This summer James set out with the goal of climbing the Grand Traverse in Grand Teton National Park. He trained over the summer, rallied an all time climbing team, thought through his climbing strategy and asked me to put it in motion. I was kind of hoping he’d forgotten about it 😂 Starting at 4am on August 19th, James strung together three massive 12-14hr back-to-back days of climbing. We didn’t finish the entire Grand Traverse but along the way, he completed the Cathedral Traverse, climbing Teewinot, Mount Owen on the first day - around 9000ft of vert, the north face of the Grand on the second day, followed by a final day climbing the Middle Teton and South Teton. It wasn’t just his grit and endurance I was impressed with but his endless stoke and openness to trying something so hard. You know you’re doing something right as a 9yr old when you get @leo_houlding and @conrad_anker to run support for you. (Thanks gentlemen for the charcuterie board at the lower saddle!) Huge thanks to @jimwmorrison, @jimmyhartman and @erichroepke for being such incredible climbing partners and mentors to James. We all agreed—these were the best mountain days of our summer. Nice work rallying the boys James!

@alexhonnold composed and casual, free soloing 2,000 feet above the deck on the Enduro Pitch of Freerider. Full extension with mere finger tips in contact with the granite, feet smeared on nothing. Alex’s process to prepare for his dream of free soloing El Cap was an incredible, sometimes-stressful journey to witness. But it was unquestionably mind-bending to watch.
