We got in the car and drove like five miles for her to show me this trick on the bar.

She's flipping around. She gets hung up and I go, "Are you stuck?" It was natural, but I think that might be the most important thing we ever asked as dads. She's hanging on there, struggling, and I could help right away. I could just go lift her up. But here's the thing. Dads ask, "Are you stuck?"

Because we have the ability to fix a lot of things. But we're also asking our kids to grow, to try first. I feel like we learn this from watching God deal with us. He could fix every single problem right away. But he cares more about who we become than fixing everything fast. He doesn't just want to change what's happening. He wants us to change.

And look, she's not crying. She's actually laughing and trying again because I didn't jump in too fast. Sometimes love means simply asking, "Are you stuck?" and standing there with the power to help, but also the power to help them grow. Waiting for growth.

Follow if that’s something you want more of.

one morning a collector called me a little shaken

she said her 3 year old grandson had gotten hold of one of those sticky wall walkers
family Easter party
and somehow it landed right on their big canvas

red streaks
stuck in the surface

they tried to clean it carefully
and made it worse

in her words
we ruined it

we worked it out
got her taken care of with a new one

but before we hung up
I told her

don’t throw the old one away
just put it somewhere
there may come a day you love that one more

it reminded me of something

when I was 8
my parents bought a very expensive piano

we all knew it

one day I didn’t feel like practicing
so I leaned forward
and bit the lid
two front teeth
just went to work on it

my dad came home
you can imagine

years later
we were packing up to move to Nashville

my parents came over
and gave me that same piano

my dad was pointing out all the wear
the scratches
the imperfections

then my mom told me quietly

the tuner had suggested refinishing it
sanding it down
making it look new again

your dad almost said yes

but then he touched those old bite marks
and changed his mind

said no

some marks stay

because they mean something

on the morning of the resurrection
the apostles were hiding

uncertain
afraid

and then He was there

most people think fitness is about the body

I think for my mom it was about availability

Proverbs 31 says “she girds herself with strength and makes her arms strong”

I used to think that was a checklist

but watching my mom I think it’s a theology

she kept herself ready for a moment she couldn’t predict

and when it came at 9 PM on a Tuesday

she didn’t have to think about it

her body was already in the conversation

because she’d been showing up at 4 AM for 15 years

for us

A few days before her first solo, my nine-year-old daughter told me, “I don’t want to sing it, Dad. This isn’t like singing in the car. This is a pulpit.”

There was a full gospel choir behind her and hundreds of faces waiting. She was scared. So we changed what we practiced. We stopped focusing on the song and started focusing on what happens in your heart and body when you feel the Holy Spirit.

I asked her what it felt like. She said, “I feel love. I feel warm. Like I’m not alone.” So we made a plan: she would start with her eyes closed and not open them until she felt that same peace. We practiced it over and over.

The day came. She walked up to the pulpit. The room went quiet. The piano started. She closed her eyes—not just for a second, but for over a minute. Then something shifted. Midway through, she hit a run, and someone in the crowd shouted, “Sing, girl.” Everything changed. People stood, clapped, cried. She opened her eyes and finished the song completely free.

Watching her, I realized something. My job as a dad isn’t to take away fear. It’s to teach my kids where to turn when it shows up and how to recognize when they feel God near.

I saw her do it at 9, and I’ve seen her do it ever since. Even last week, 60,000 people in the stands, 2 million watching, her eyes stayed closed through “the twilight’s last gleaming.” Then she opened them and sang her heart out through “the home of the brave” as jets flew overhead.

Same process. Same God.
Faith isn’t the absence of fear. It’s knowing exactly where to turn when it hits.

So when fear shows up, don’t rush past it. Be still. Keep your heart open long enough to feel God. And when you open your eyes, sing your heart out.

Meet my wife, Tara.

If you’ve ordered one of our gift prints or postcard boxes lately, you probably got a sweet handwritten note in the package.

That note was from Tara.

She’s the one who first STALKS YOU on Instagram, then wraps them, and ships them.

She loves you.

Here’s a little behind the scenes.

Tara is the HEALER in our home.
She makes gourmet meals and demands that we sit down, phoneless, and eat slowly.
Everyone talks.
In passing, she ask taboo questions…
Especially to the young adults in our life.

“Did you kiss him?” she’ll ask with teenage curiosity, then somehow follow it with grown-up wisdom.

She LAUGHS.

You can hear the laugh from across the house when the kids show her memes… people falling down really get her.

She was raised on slapstick.

Three Stooges. I Love Lucy.
Last night she laughed so hard at Ace Ventura she fell asleep mid-scene, smiling.

She’s a study in contrasts.
Not a theologian, but she knows what she believes and defends it.
Also not afraid to live with questions that don’t make sense.

She moves around constantly.

This year she learned to do a handstand, the splits, and got a SIX-PACK!

She sings on the Peloton like she’s in concert.

Tara is my most honest art critic.
The more she dislikes a piece I’m about to release, the better it usually sells.

Famously, she said, “I’m not sure people will like Resurrection in Black and White.”

She’s close to my parents.
Beautiful, drama-free relationships with each of my seven sisters.
They cheer each other through life like family has no boundaries.

She’s a new grandma.
When a FaceTime call comes in from Mark or Mollie, Tara runs to the phone because that means Nolie is answering.
When we visit, her first hold of that baby always starts with happy tears.

Her decor style is “things that I like.”
She mixes eras, colors, and price tags without apology.
She says she decorates like a grandma, but she’s done it since our first home at twenty-one.

It’s like movie living with her.
She laughs and cries almost daily.
She feels and she loves deeply.

Happy birthday, Tara

Everybody loves you.

I’ve thought about that moment a lot

I loved him the whole time

I was just scared to go all in

scared of how bad it would hurt if the worst case played out

so I kept pulling back and having to re-engage

Tara carried the same uncertainty

but her love never got the option to pull back
it just kept going

maybe that’s one of the things motherhood does

it teaches a body to love without withdrawing

even when withdrawing is the easiest defense a soul has
John wrote that perfect love casts out fear

I don’t think he meant the fear goes away

I think he meant it stops being in charge

Tara was living that before I knew it was a verse

“Grandchildren are the crown of the aged”

I’ve read that proverb as a younger guy… but it hits different as a grandpa

it’s the first time I’ve stopped to ask the obvious question

if grandchildren are the crown, than what are the ones in the middle… our kids?

they are the ones carrying the crown!

and in my case it’s my daughter in law, Mollie

(and someday my other sweet daughter in law Brielle, then Ava my daughter, the whoever marries Canon…)

whose the one who wakes up at 2am to feed the crown?

to read to it?

worry over it?

builds a home around it?

so it can grow up safe and loved?

it’s not the grandpa!

the grandpa shows up with a sandwich and a hug and takes all the pictures. I would know.

the one carrying the crown is the young mother…

the one show married my son and changed my name to Grandpa and I will never get over it (in a good way)

this is a Mother’s Day post for fathers-in-law.

swipe for the story of how my dad taught me to love the one who carries the crown

Brielle has perfect pitch

so my favorite thing to do is turn on

any song and watch how fast she can start

playing it…

(usually less than 4 beats!)

Now she’s a month from done at Belmont

Magna cum Laude

in Commercial Music and Composition

she has a FULL ROSTER of students!!!

 for vocal and keyboard

she teaches remote and local in Nashville

she led a national contender a cappella group

and could figure out how to harmonize just about anything

*** All I’m saying is, we’re so luck to have her

AND if you want to learn to sing or play

or your a pro who needs a new coach…

she’s about to have spots open up after graduation!!!

hit her up!

this is the kind of post that makes people hate instagram, but I really don’t know what to do about that

This year you were blessed with baby Nolie (granted your job was easy for the first nine months, but it will become increasingly complex

you love Mollie and she loves and respects you and treats you like a king

you finished a finance degree while working full time and making a big impact on your company

you’re growing a second company

you keep a handful of great friends

and your handicap is dropping

24 has been good to you Marky!!!

Along the way you have remembered to reach out to your younger brothers and sisters…

you call your grandparents

and we talk nearly every day! (thank you)

you read

you listen

you’re developing opinions

and you’re keeping the promises you’ve made to God and to Mollie

I am beyond proud of you

Happy 25th Birthday Marky

I love you

I want my kids to understand that their scars can tell a beautiful story.
When I was about eleven,
I got hit in the head with a baseball bat at a team party.
I don’t remember much just laying down looking up
and the mirror at the hospital with my dad standing behind me.
Thirty-six stitches.
Blood all over my shirt.
And a white bandage that made me feel like Rambo (it was 1988)
That scar was easy to wear.
It had a story.
It even looked a little heroic.
Did I mention I remember my dad standing behind me?
But not all my scars are that cinematic.
I’ve failed at businesses.
I’ve said things I’ve had to repent for.
I’ve watched two sons grow up and move out,
and every time I’ve wondered what kind of scars I might have left on them.
Plenty from backyard tackles or bike crashes, but those ones are cool.
The quiet ones.
Born from impatience,
too many words,
not enough listening…
Transference of my young dad stress onto them…
Sky high expectations…
With both sons it seems like part of the exit interview is my apologizing and them graciously saying “I understand” and forgiving me of everything I may have missed…
And somehow with time and my oldest son having a baby of his own, I can see how God has redeemed my failures for beauty in my son who is an excellent dad.
Jesus came out of the tomb glowy and perfect…
But when Jesus stood before His friends who were hiding out…
He didn’t lead with a crown or a robe.
He said,
“Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands.”
He reintroduced Himself… scars first.
He kept those scars on purpose.
So maybe the scars we carry aren’t signs of failure,
but of recovery… healing.

Maybe they’re invitations to courageously show them to Jesus.

Maybe they’re proof that redemption is still at work.
Our scars become sacred
even collectible
when we give them to Jesus…

Before my wedding, I remember a few people asking
“Are you ready to be married?”

Good thing I was 21 and my undeveloped brain let me think yes!

I’m still waiting for someone to pull me aside and let me in on the joke

‘Ready to be married’ is crazy

IS ANY BOY ‘READY’ TO ‘BE’ MARRIED?

27 years in, I feel like I’m finally getting to where I understand what ‘ready’ means

And I actually quite like it

(I mean, I’m married to freaking Tara, soooo there’s that)

But ‘ready’?

The thing I love about love

Is that love accumulates

And every year I love her more than the one before it…

Not on purpose though

I thought I was pedal to the metal in 1999

But things happen that have deepened how I feel about Tara

Jobs, kids, GRANDkid(s), moves, forgivenesses, friends, laughs, cries, joint-faith-deepening, appointments and disappointments, wins, losses, little promises, and big covenants…

The whole time, she has laughed and cried and worried and hugged every friend that came over and made our kids feel wanted and fed everyone like they were a visiting dignitary..

She’s just unreal

I love her

She makes being married pretty easy

A couple of years ago, I was shooting some pictures

My parents were with me

I had selected my cast and crew for the scenes

I had flown them in from all over the country

I had a shot list posted so everyone knew what was going on

But I hadn’t announced who would play Mary at Cana

Jesus’ Mother, when Jesus turned water into wine

A few hours before the shoot

I walked up to my mom in the kitchen of our production house

(the other reason I waited until the last hour was because I knew she would fret about it all week)

“Mom, I would like you to play Mary”

She was shocked

“Mark!?!?…” tears, “I, I…”

In 43 years of showing me nothing but pure Christ-like love…

it never occurred to my mom that her name is written all over my life…

or that when I imagine a mother worthy of Sainthood

I see her face in my mind

Shame on me for not making this obvious before…

She was so nervous in costume,

she worried about her facial expressions

and hand gestures

trying to make sure everything was perfect

And then from behind the camera

something occurred to me

I could finally find the words of love that had eluded me since the first time I accidentally said “mama”

Mom, you have always been perfect for this part…

it’s not about what you do or how you move… it’s who you are…

now just sit there and watch Jesus do a miracle

love,

Posting about dad’s is fragile because bad ones can do so much damage that’s it doesn’t seem fair that they are good ones too… “ daddy issues“ is a term for a reason.

I know a lot of great dads. I have one. My wife has one. My kids’ dad is still working on it…

The topic is difficult and sensitive, which is probably why we should never stop reminding our boys that we need them to grow up to be great dads.

Not long ago, my son was in a golf tournament.
He was two under through 10.

Things were going pretty well when he drove one into the ugly stuff.
The next shot was just as bad.

I watched his shoulders drop and he was really starting to doubt things.
So, I walked up to him.

At first, I said,
"Son, you're lucky no girls are watching."

And after that airball, I asked him a question.
I said,
"Do you know the difference between Jesus and Peter walking on water that day?"

As you can imagine, he wasn't really in the mood to answer.
So, I answered for myself.

I said,
"The difference was that Peter doubted the miracle could last more than a few steps, but he was actually doing the thing. He was walking on water. He was having the miracle."

My son took a breath and he smiled a little bit, still a little taller.

Not long ago, my wife made me and him these hats to remind us that things can go well.
Miracles can happen and we have to keep letting them happen.

Trust the miracle because sometimes the hardest part of receiving a miracle is receiving a miracle.

How many times do we stumble on a miracle?
How many times do we fumble a beautiful moment with our wife or our kids or in business or in life because we don't really think that the miracle can last?

God isn't waiting for us to sink.
He's inviting us to trust him and trust the next step and to keep walking on

He had the skills.
The clients.
The portfolio.

But something was missing.

Mark Mabry realized his work wasn’t pouring into him… it was just pouring out.

So he removed the noise and made space for God to speak.

And that’s where the vision came from
To create realistic, powerful depictions of Jesus through his lens.

When you feel empty creating… it might not be burnout
It might be misalignment.
