A Southwest flight dropped 475 feet Friday, about six minutes after takeoff from Burbank, to avoid a midair collision with a nearby Hawker Hunter Mk. 58 jet.

Passengers described the plunge as terrifying, with many thrown from their seats and screams echoing through the cabin. Two flight attendants were injured, but no passengers were hurt.

The pilots responded to two traffic alerts by climbing and descending as a Hawker Hunter reportedly entered controlled airspace without clearance, though the Southwest crew had visual contact.

The flight continued and landed safely in Las Vegas. Southwest said it’s cooperating with the Federal Aviation Administration for a full investigation. #jointheflyover #news #travelnews #southwestairlines #airtrafficcontrol

The FBI released photos of a college-age person of interest and offered a reward of up to $100,000 for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University.

Kirk was fatally shot during a Turning Point USA event on Sept. 10, 2025, with authorities recovering an older model Mauser .30-06 bolt-action rifle in a wooded area where they believe the suspect fled.

Kirk’s death was announced by President Trump, who praised the influential activist as a “truly Great American Patriot.” On Thursday morning, Trump, at an observance of the 24th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks, said he would posthumously award Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Vice President JD Vance’s plane, Air Force Two, was set to transport Kirk’s casket from Utah to Arizona on Thursday, where his family lives and Turning Point USA is headquartered. Vance and second lady Usha Vance were scheduled to meet with Kirk’s family and close friends in Salt Lake City before the trip. #jointheflyover #news #fbi #charliekirk #trumpadministration #assassination #jdvance

Iran launched retaliatory airstrikes on Israel late Friday, targeting Jerusalem and Tel Aviv after Israeli strikes killed top Iranian military leaders and nuclear scientists.

Israeli officials said Iran fired about 100 missiles in two waves. The Iron Dome defense system intercepted most of the missiles, though some caused fires and injured 44 people, leaving two people in serious condition.

The Trump administration denied U.S. military involvement in Israel’s strike, but American forces did assist in shooting down Iranian missiles and projectiles Friday, according to three U.S. officials.

Iran canceled planned nuclear talks with the U.S. that were set for Sunday in Oman, despite President Trump urging Tehran to engage in talks before it's too late. #jointheflyover #news #airstrike #iran #israel #trumpadministration

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting on Friday announced it will shut down operations in September after losing $1.1 billion in federal funding.

CPB, with close to 100 employees, provides funds to 1,500 local public radio and television stations as well as PBS and NPR.

President Trump and Republican allies have long argued that taxpayer funding for public media represents unnecessary government spending, while claiming that PBS and NPR programming exhibits anti-conservative bias.

CPB informed employees on Friday that most staff positions will end on September 30. #jointhelfyover #news #trumpadministration #npr #cbs #publicbroadcasting

The Teamsters strike against Republic Services, the nation’s second-largest waste disposal company, has spread far beyond Boston, with roughly 2,000 workers now either on strike or refusing to cross picket lines, disrupting trash collection across the mid-Atlantic, Midwest, and West Coast, including L.A., the Bay Area, Seattle suburbs, and Ohio landfills.

Trash is piling up in affected regions—dumpsters are overflowing, rodents are becoming an issue, and some municipalities have even called the strike a public health emergency.

The union demands that the Republic match wages and benefits offered by competitors, especially Capitol Waste Services. The company offers a raise (about 43% over five years) but won’t budge on matching rival pay scales.

The third mandated meeting with a federal mediator was scheduled for Tuesday, but negotiations remain tense and trash delays persist. #jointheflyover #news #publichealth #strike #republicservices

The Ryder Cup, golf’s most patriotic event, begins today in New York as Team USA faces Team Europe in a highly anticipated showdown backed by a loud American home crowd.

Held every two years, the event features 24 of the world’s best golfers competing in team-based match play across three days. Team USA leads the all-time series 27–15. The European team won the last Cup in 2023.

President Trump plans to attend the event at Bethpage Black, a famously difficult Long Island course known for its narrow fairways, deep rough, and strategically placed bunkers.

Fans pay up to a top-tier price of $750 to get through the gates at Bethpage, but tickets include unlimited free concessions. However, beers start at $15, and cocktails climb as high as $29. #jointheflyover #news #golf #rydercup

Federal agents found 10 illegal migrant youths, mostly unaccompanied, at a California marijuana farm on Thursday, prompting an investigation into potential child labor violations.

Border Patrol agents detained about 200 people during raids at separate Glass House Farms sites in Camarillo and Carpinteria, clashing with protesters and deploying tear gas during the operation.

Protesters initiated a standoff, threw rocks, and shattered van windows before dispersing after a federal convoy bypassed them using nearby dirt roads.

California records show Glass House Farms’ co-founder, president, and board director is a Democratic donor who has contributed to Rep. Salud Carbajal, the Santa Barbara County Democratic Central Committee PAC, and Gov. Gavin Newsom #jointheflyover #news #californianews #childlabor #protest

Venezuela on Friday released 10 jailed U.S. citizens and residents in exchange for migrants the U.S. deported to El Salvador months earlier under an immigration crackdown.

Former Navy SEAL Wilbert Joseph Castaneda, detained in Venezuela last year during personal travel, was among the Americans released despite U.S. travel warnings. The U.S. has warned Americans against traveling to Venezuela or near its borders, citing the risks of wrongful detention.

The U.S. Embassy in Venezuela posted a photo of the freed Americans with U.S. diplomat John McNamara.

El Salvador released more than 250 Venezuelan migrants who were believed to belong to the violent Tren de Aragua street gang. They had been housed at the Terrorism Confinement Center mega-prison since March. #jointheflyover #news #venezuela #internationalnews

A bipartisan coalition of 51 state attorneys general launched a multistate effort to end illegal robocalls, which are automated telephone calls that deliver a pre-recorded message.

The states began “Operation Robocall Roundup” by sending warning letters to 37 different voice providers demanding “immediate action” to prevent robocalls from being routed through their networks.

The letters warn that the attorneys general are authorized to enforce federal law and state law enforcement actions. Thus, the providers must respond within 21 days with a plan on how to comply with the laws. #jointheflyover #news #spamcalls #takeaction #robocalls #donotcallregistry #dncregistry

Twenty-seven states and D.C. are suing to block bankrupt DNA testing firm 23andMe from selling genetic data without customer consent.

The lawsuit argues that biological samples and health traits are too personal to be treated as assets in a bankruptcy sale.

The lawsuit follows Regeneron’s $256 million acquisition attempt and a surprise $305 million counterbid from 23andMe co-founder Anne Wojcicki.

23andMe insists the sale complies with its privacy policies and applicable law, but states argue those protections aren’t enough for 15 million customers.

A court decision is pending as the bankruptcy sale process continues.

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox revealed new details Sunday about Charlie Kirk’s suspected killer, Tyler Robinson, particularly noting that Robinson’s roommate, who is transgender (a male who identifies as female), has become a person of interest and was Robinson’s “romantic partner.”

Robinson contacted his roommate after the shooting with details on the whereabouts of the hidden murder weapon. Gov. Cox said the roommate is “incredibly cooperative” with investigators and was “aghast” at the shooting.

Cox also said that Robinson was active in the “deep, dark internet […] culture” and posted in at least one group after the shooting. One radical left group in Utah, in which Robinson may have participated, deleted its social media profile in the wake of the shooting.

Meanwhile, Turning Point USA, co-founded by Kirk, announced that his memorial has been set for Sunday, Sept. 21, at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. The stadium has a capacity of 63,400. Turning Point USA invited people to come celebrate the life of an American legend. #jointheflyover #news #turningpointUSA

Iran’s parliament voted to close the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, a key oil chokepoint handling 20% of global crude shipments, escalating the crisis after U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.

That morning, Iran fired about 30 missiles at Israel, wounding 21 people in Haifa, Tel Aviv, Be’er Yaakov, and Nes Ziona, with buildings reduced to rubble and some residents trapped.

At a Pentagon press conference Sunday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Gen. Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, said the operation delivered “extremely severe damage” to Iran’s nuclear facilities and emphasized the U.S. does not seek war.

They outlined Operation Midnight Hammer, a mission using seven B-2 bombers that flew 37 hours round-trip from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri. The stealth aircraft dropped 14 bunker-buster bombs on Fordow and Natanz, encountering no resistance from Iran’s air defenses.

In a blockbuster day that ended the Supreme Court term, the Justices issued rulings on a half-dozen cases, including the birthright citizenship case covered above.

Most prominent among these was a 6-3 decision allowing parents to opt out of classroom discussions involving LGBTQ+ books, with the three liberal justices dissenting. The court said not allowing an opt-out would violate parents’ religious rights under the First Amendment.

The justices also ruled, with the same 6-3 split, that Texas’ age-verification law for porn websites was constitutional, a decision that clears the way for other states to limit access to the site for users under 18. Twenty states currently have similar laws.

In another case, the Supreme Court allowed HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to appoint and fire members of an ObamaCare task force. #jointheflyover #news #supremecourt #firstamendment
