You don’t perform on 6 hours sleep. One of the most important sleep studies ever ran a brutally simple test. People slept 4h, 6h, or 8h per night for 14 days. No all-nighters. Just “normal” short sleep. Cognitive performance was tested every two hours. By day 14: 6 hours = same impairment as being awake for 24 hours. 4 hours = same as 48 hours awake. But here’s the scary part – after day 3–4, people stopped feeling more tired. Reaction times kept slowing, attention lapses kept increasing, working memory kept degrading. But subjective sleepiness flatlined. Your brain keeps getting worse, your ability to notice it breaks. This is why chronic undersleeping feels sustainable – you adapt to feeling tired but you do not adapt to being cognitively impaired. The participants would’ve told you they felt “okay”. Objectively, they were functioning like they’d pulled an all-nighter. If you’re sleeping 6 hours and think you’re fine, you’ve probably lost calibration. Sleep need is biological. Most adults need 7–9 hours. “I only need 6” usually means “I forgot what normal feels like.” Feeling fine is not evidence you’re functioning well. Chronic sleep loss doesn’t just impair your brain – it blinds you to the impairment. — h/t @aakashgupta

Brand new 3+ hour episode now live with @naval 🚀

This has been a very long time coming.

Shot in downtown San Francisco in a beautiful old library room. We brought in a fantastic steady cam operator so there’s some incredible roaming shots which really bring this one to life. Gorgeous buttery tones throughout.

Expect to learn the true price of success, whether sacrificing your happiness is worth it, what advice Naval would give to his younger self, what the true source of unhappiness is for most people, how to overcome low self-esteem, what Naval would add to his ‘How To Get Rich’ thread, how to become comfortable being unapologetically selfish, what Naval sees as the next big trends in science and technology, his take on the escalating culture wars, how to get comfortable with death and overcoming grief, the best and worst ways to spend your wealth and much more…

You’re likely not going to be able to go skiing at 70. You can no longer do the season in Ibiza at 45. Some experiences are only available to you right now. Go and do them.

Some differences between male & female university professors in America... “71% of men reported that protecting free speech is more important than promoting an inclusive society; 59% of women said promoting an inclusive society is more important than protecting free speech. 56% of men said that colleges should not protect students from offensive ideas; 64% of women said that they should. 51% of men said colleges should not disinvite speakers if students threaten violent protest; 67% of women said they should. 58% of men opposed a confidential reporting system at colleges which students could use to report offensive comments; 54% of women supported it. 63% of men thought controversial news stories in student papers should not need administrators’ approval before publication; 51% of women thought they should. 65% of men believed that supporting the right to make an argument is not the same as endorsing it; 51% of women disagreed. 66–76% of men support intellectually foundational texts above diversity quotas on reading lists; 44–66% of women support diversity quotas above foundational texts. Female academics report a greater willingness than their male counterparts to support dismissal campaigns against a colleague who has conducted research that reached a controversial conclusion. 58% of men said it is never acceptable to shout down speakers or to try to prevent them from delivering their remarks; 58% of women said it was sometimes or always acceptable. Put simply; men are relatively more interested in advancing what is empirically correct, and women are relatively more interested in advancing what is morally desirable.” — @ImHardcory

Habits from the habits guy. “Habits that have a high rate of return in life: – sleeping 8+ hours each day – lifting weights 3x week – going for a walk each day – saving at least 10 percent of your income – reading every day – drinking more water and less of everything else – leaving your phone in another room while you work” — @JamesClear
