The Great Smoky Mountains are famous for their blue smoke, but to truly appreciate them, you have to take a look for yourself and go beyond the haze.

Vox traveled to the Smokies to explore how these mountains get their iconic blue, hazy effect and how the Cherokee people, whose presence in the region dates back thousands of years, are connected to one of the country’s most impressive national parks.

On one side is the religious right’s use of scripture and faith to justify and defend President Donald Trump’s agenda — and growing Christian nationalist sentiment. On the other side is the reshaping of the American Catholic Church under Pope Leo XIV.

Through new appointments, orders to his bishops to speak out about immigration, and public comments critiquing the direction of the US under Trump, the pope is setting up his bishops and priests to be evangelizers, to be vocal about human dignity, and to be a counterweight to the authoritarian and nationalist tendencies of the right.

While the church has long played a role in US politics, Pope Leo’s interventions, according to Christopher Hale, a Catholic writer and political activist who writes the Letters from Leo Substack, represent something new.

Readers and audiences have been falling in love with British romance stories for centuries. Books by authors like the Brontë sisters and Jane Austen still fly off the shelves, and they’ve been adapted for the big and small screen dozens of times.

But how do great filmmakers adapt 19th-century writing into epic cinema? It’s all about the location.

From endless moors to massive estates, Britain plays a leading role in two of its biggest cultural exports: Wuthering Heights and Pride and Prejudice.

Thanksgiving is arguably one of the yummiest celebrations in the US and one where you’re expected to be home for the holidays. But, what are your options when going home isn’t one? In recent decades, Friendsgiving has emerged as the go-to choice as an additional event or complete alternative to Thanksgiving.

It can be tough during the holidays with the pressures of trying to get everything just right to present yourself as a well-adjusted adult hosting a Thanksgiving dinner, or to be present with family that may think they know what’s best for you. Friendsgiving has opened the door to do things a little bit differently. The intention is to have a laid-back, low-pressure (or over-the-top, totally up to the host) potluck-style dinner with friends and other people in your chosen community — because as cheesy as it sounds, friends are the new family.

Friendsgiving was seemingly plucked from obscurity in the 2010s. While its exact origins are debated, it was likely widely practiced prior to its fame on The Real Housewives of New Jersey in 2011. Even then it took a few more years for it to pick up steam in the media.

On January 8, 2023, thousands of supporters of Brazil’s right-wing former President Jair Bolsonaro stormed federal buildings in the country’s capital. Their goal? Overthrow the results of an election they claimed was rigged, despite no credible evidence of fraud.

That might sound oddly familiar to the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol, just two years earlier. But the aftermath could not be more different. Jair Bolsonaro is now serving a 27-year prison sentence, while Donald Trump is president, again.

So how did two democracies, facing similar threats, end up with such different outcomes? #Brazil #Bolsonaro #Trump #January6

When it comes to fixing the world’s worst problems, it can be easy to pretend that we’re helpless.

But, it turns out, that’s simply not true. According to a new report by a group of anti-poverty researchers that uses AI tools to achieve unusually granular data of the picture on the ground, the price tag for completely ending extreme poverty would be just $318 billion per year. Using targeted direct cash transfers, it would cost around 0.3 percent of global GDP to ensure that virtually everyone has enough to pay for the absolute basics — the food, shelter, and medicine they need to survive each day.

While $318 billion might sound like a lot, it really isn’t. Americans will spend over three times as much on their holiday shopping this year alone. Elon Musk could foot the entire bill for a year and still have over more than $300 billion to spare.

Platypuses disappeared from Australia's oldest national park decades ago.

Now scientists are bringing them back, helping reestablish a long-lost link in the local food chain.

A new study suggests that the reintroduction program is working — nearly all of the released platypuses are alive, and they're having babies, demonstrating that rewilding iconic species can work.

What should you do if you feel very disturbed by what’s going on in Minnesota, but your friends don’t feel called to act or even care?

Sigal Samuel, the writer of Vox’s advice column Your Mileage May Vary, got asked that very question by a reader and turned to Ernst Fraenkel, a German Jewish political scientist and labor lawyer who authored the 1941 book The Dual State.

“Here’s his main insight: Life under authoritarianism is actually, for the most part, weirdly normal. It’s often even, well, boring. The average person can go about their day as usual. You take your kids to school, you head to the office, and yes, you even host dinner parties. You live in the realm that Fraenkel referred to as “the normative state,” and from within that realm, it’s easy to think that if you just keep your head down and avoid making waves, you’ll be perfectly fine, thank you very much,” Samuel writes.

“But Fraenkel’s book is called The Dual State for a reason. This first state, the business-as-usual one, actually exists to lull you into a sense of complacency such that you don’t realize that another state is also operating in parallel with it. That second state, which Fraenkel calls ‘the prerogative state,’ only becomes visible to you when you do something that the powers that be don’t like. Then suddenly you’re in a realm where the rule of law does not exist, where citizens can be killed with impunity, where you — even you, who thought you were invulnerable — can become a target.”

So, Samuel argues the first step is making sure your friends truly understand the kind of reality we’re in at this moment.

You don’t have to speak Spanish to understand that Bad Bunny’s blockbuster Super Bowl halftime show was a powerful one: rooted in place, history, politics, and most importantly, joy.

But if you’re not intimately familiar with the oeuvre or the island, there are a lot of smaller details you might have missed — from all of the very Puerto Rican activities in the intro to Bad Bunny’s light blue Puerto Rican flag.

Izzie Ramirez — Vox’s biggest Bad Bunny enthusiast — collected some of the most striking details from his history-making performance: the first Super Bowl halftime show to be performed entirely in Spanish, building on Shakira and Jennifer Lopez’s joint performance in 2020.

Behind Bogotá’s care revolution is a women’s movement with teeth.

In 2010, Colombia became the first country to legally require that its government quantify how much unpaid work was being done and by whom. The initial time-use survey, conducted in 2012, found that caregivers provided more than 35 billion hours of labor each year, amounting to more than one-fifth of the country’s GDP. Women did 80 percent of that work.

The political will to do something about those statistics started to build. One movement bolstering women in the city was the Mothers of False Positives, led by women whose sons had been killed by the military in the mid-2000s; the military then falsely presented these men as guerrilla fighters to inflate its own body counts. The mothers transformed their grief into a public reckoning, marching, testifying, and demanding justice — reframing the work of motherhood itself as a form of political resistance.

All these factors paved the way for Claudia López’s 2019 mayoral campaign. Care blocks, the signature policy of López’s administration, are built around the “3 Rs”: recognize, redistribute, and reduce. Recognize that care work is real work that sustains society. Redistribute it — not just between women and men, but to care recipients when able, and to the state, employers, and communities. And reduce the overall burden so individual caregivers aren’t consumed by it.

It’s pretty much impossible to live a life free of environmental harm. The cleanest energy relies on mining. Critical medical supplies produce plastic waste. Even organic foods are typically grown with pesticides.

But there is one thing you could do immediately that would help the planet a heck of a lot: eat less beef.

While for most omnivores, beef is hard to give up, the data is incredibly clear and incredibly compelling: Of all the foods we produce on Earth, beef is the No. 1 destroyer of forests, and especially rainforests. Raising cattle for meat not only endangers wildlife but fuels climate change — in a big way.

The humble sleepover is a youthful rite of passage that gradually becomes less thrilling as you age.

But as the constraints and responsibilities of adulthood mount, and spending time with friends falls lower on the priority list, there’s a case to be made for the sleepover — a purely platonic hangout among friends who simply want to see more of each other. Not to be confused with those of the sexual kind, the platonic adult sleepover ones are particularly attractive to young-ish women without children who crave deeper connection with their friends (and have the time and resources to do so).

Men, on the other hand, who tend to bond over activities rather than emotions, may find purposefully inviting a friend to spend the night awkward and juvenile. But they could stand to benefit from something as seemingly silly as a sleepover. And they sometimes do, in the case of camping, multiday conventions, and other activity-based overnight excursions.

Dedicating several hours to a pal in as intimate a location as possible sets the scene for more vulnerable conversations. Even if the itinerary for the evening falls on the banal side — eating, watching TV, sleeping — simply living alongside another person can bring you closer.
