A federal judge ruled on March 24th that nine property owners are entitled to compensation for land along the abandoned 41-mile Metro-North rail line stretching from Beacon, NY to the Connecticut border. Judge David Tapp found that the easements granted for rail use do not extend to recreational trails, allowing landowners to seek money after the Surface Transportation Board authorized interim trail use. 260+ other landowners have filed claims. Metro-North, which acquired the line in 1995, is in talks to transfer a 13-mile portion to the state for a planned hiking and biking trail from Beacon to Hopewell Junction. The trail would begin at the Beacon Metro-North station and travel past key city streets, under Route 9D, and along Route 52 before connecting with the Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail, Fishkill communities, and the broader Empire State Trail system.
