What are your thoughts?

ICE raided a home on North Elm Street in #BeaconNY, on the morning of June 20, without prior notice to city officials, according to Mayor Lee Kyriacou. It’s still unclear who was detained or whether ICE presented a judicial warrant. ICE has not responded to requests for comment.

Beacon Mayor emphasized the city had no role in the operation and reaffirmed the commitment to being a safe and inclusive community. Police Chief confirmed with the FBI that ICE was involved and noted a second visit the following day.

Residents reported seeing armed ICE and FBI agents in body armor early that morning.

In response, locals formed an informal neighborhood watch and began distributing cards in English & Spanish, advising immigrants on what to say and do during encounters with ICE.

Immigration attorney Joseph Lavetsky noted ICE has increasingly broadened its enforcement, often using deception to make arrests and targeting individuals without criminal records.

What are your thoughts?

Starting Monday, Oct. 6, Metro-North Railroad will debut new “super-express” commuter trains cutting travel times between Poughkeepsie and New York City to under 90 minutes. Riders from Beacon will reach the city in under an hour.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the service at Grand Central Terminal, saying the trains will save commuters 15 minutes daily — more than an hour a week. Beacon Mayor Lee Kyriacou praised the move, calling Metro-North “the economic backbone of the Hudson Valley.”

Metro-North President Justin Vonashek added that the upgrades build on the railroad’s 98% on-time performance, with more improvements to come.

Can you believe it?

Recent snowfall has created ideal tracking conditions in Dutchess County, New York, and local Bigfoot enthusiasts say several unusual sets of footprints have been spotted across the area.

The group Bigfoot Researchers of the Hudson Valley shared three recent reports from Wappingers Falls, Spackenkill, Poughkeepsie, and Milan.

One set of tracks in Wappingers Falls reportedly showed strides of about six feet. Another appeared in a Spackenkill neighborhood, and a third was discovered by a woman snowshoeing near Wilcox Park.#
Group member Gayle Beatty said reports typically increase during snowy weather and claimed the creature is known, anecdotally, to raid garbage and take shelter in barns and abandoned buildings.
The group says it plans to follow up and investigate the latest sightings.

What are your thoughts?

Edison “Eddie” Irizarry has been charged with murder following the fatal shooting of 58-year-old Casey Cuddy, also known as Wilbur Cuddy, Tuesday night around 9pm at their shared apartment in Beacon.

Irizarry initially told 911 dispatchers that he shot Cuddy in self-defense after being threatened with a shotgun. However, investigators say he later recanted parts of his statement. He now faces charges of murder, criminal possession of a weapon, and criminal possession of a firearm.

Less than an hour before the shooting, Irizarry posted a cryptic message on Facebook referencing killing a “Petti file,” a possible misspelling of “pedophile.” Sources told Mid Hudson News that Irizarry had accused Cuddy of being a pedophile and the two had been arguing prior to the shooting.

“No Kings” protests are returning to the Hudson Valley on Oct. 18, with 14 demonstrations planned across Dutchess, Orange, Sullivan, and Ulster counties, according to the movement’s website.

The nationwide day of nonviolent action, organized by @indivisibleteam, aims to push back against what organizers call the rise of political dynasties and anti-democratic power. The movement, which began earlier this year, gained attention on June 14, when thousands protested across the country — including a march in Newburgh — coinciding with a military parade held by President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C.

Organizers say the renewed demonstrations are meant to “fight dictatorship,” accusing Trump and his administration of authoritarian overreach, particularly regarding immigration enforcement and ICE detainments.
“The president thinks his rule is absolute,” reads a statement on the group’s site. “But in America, we don’t have kings — and we won’t back down against chaos, corruption, and cruelty.”

📍 Mid-Hudson “No Kings” Protest Locations – Oct. 18

Dutchess County: Beacon, Poughkeepsie (two locations), Rhinebeck
Orange County: Cornwall, Goshen, Middletown, Newburgh, Warwick
Sullivan County: Monticello
Ulster County: Gardiner, Kingston, Saugerties, Woodstock

Some event addresses are private and require RSVP through the No Kings website.

Village officials met inside the Chester Senior Center before a packed room, while hundreds more protested outside in freezing temperatures near Kings Highway and LaRoe Road. Demonstrators urged leaders to reject the proposal, saying the presence of an ICE facility would spread fear throughout the community.

The former Pep Boys warehouse on Elizabeth Drive has been identified as a potential site. Organizers with Indivisible NY estimated about 750 people attended the protest, including residents from Orange County, neighboring Hudson Valley counties, and even Long Island.

Chester village officials are expected to continue discussions on the issue at board meetings scheduled for January 14 and January 28.

What are your thoughts?

Crews started dismantling the interconnected sidewalk canopies along Wall and North Front streets as part of the city’s $1.2 million demolition plan. The work began the same day Judge David Gandin threw out two lawsuits filed by developer Neil Bender’s William Gottlieb Real Estate, which sought to block the project and overturn City Council votes approving the demolition and funding. The judge ruled that the city complied with state environmental review requirements and acted lawfully.

The Pike Plan canopies, designed in the early 1970s and dedicated in 1976, were found to be in poor condition due to construction flaws and long-term deterioration. Mayor Steve Noble has repeatedly called the project a failure and has championed their removal.

Construction crews worked throughout Uptown on Wednesday, removing sections of roofing and skylights, erecting scaffolding, and hauling debris away as pedestrians navigated detours. City officials said sidewalks and storefront access will remain open during the project, and free parking is being offered in Uptown city-owned lots for the duration of the demolition.

City Engineer John Schultheis said the city is complying with all environmental and safety standards, including protocols for handling lead paint. Officials expect the demolition to be completed by March 13.

Although 2 lawsuits were dismissed this week, William Gottlieb Real Estate has filed a total of 6 legal challenges related to the Pike Plan and has indicated it may continue pursuing litigation even after demolition is complete.

What are your thoughts?

Beacon and Kingston have been named two of New York’s “fairy-tale small towns” by World Atlas, joined by New Paltz as another mid-Hudson Valley community to earn the title.

The recognition places all 3 alongside five other destinations across the state, including Cold Spring, Alexandria Bay, Aurora, Lake George, and Saratoga Springs.

- Beacon (Dutchess County): Celebrated for its lively Main Street, Bannerman Castle, Dia Beacon, and eclectic mix of shops, dining, and arts. Mayor Lee Kyriacou described its revival from industrial decline as a “rags-to-riches story.”

- Kingston (Ulster County): Highlighted for its historic significance as New York’s first capital, attractions like the Stockade Historic District and Hudson River Maritime Museum, and its thriving arts and cultural scene. Mayor Steve Noble called Kingston “diverse and beautiful.”

- New Paltz (Ulster County): Also recognized for its storybook qualities, with Historic Huguenot Street, Mohonk Preserve, the River-to-Ridge Trail, and SUNY New Paltz adding to its character. Mayor Tim Rogers said the community balances being both a destination and a livable small town.

Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger praised the recognition, saying each town offers “a sense of wonder and connection that makes our region feel like a real-life fairytale.”

An armed security officer fired once, stopping the attacker, identified as **Carlos Ortiz**, 45, of Newburgh. Ortiz was pronounced dead at the hospital. A nearby woman was also injured but is expected to recover.

An armed security officer fired once, stopping the attacker, identified as **Carlos Ortiz**, 45, of Newburgh. Ortiz was pronounced dead at the hospital.
