What are your thoughts?

President Donald Trump announced he is terminating the Gateway Project, a multibillion-dollar plan to construct a new rail tunnel between New Jersey and Manhattan.

At a White House event, Trump said the project — long championed by Sen. Chuck Schumer — would be “terminated on a permanent basis,” calling it a waste of “billions and billions of dollars.” The decision follows the federal government’s withdrawal of funding for the project 15 days earlier, during the ongoing shutdown.

Schumer slammed the move on X, calling Gateway “the most important infrastructure project in America,” and describing Trump’s decision as “pure spite and stupidity.”

Sen. Cory Booker and Rep. Andy Kim issued a joint statement calling the move “a direct attack on New Jersey,” emphasizing that the project has historically enjoyed bipartisan support.

Gov. Phil Murphy’s office declined to comment.

What are your thoughts?

New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill moved quickly on her first day in office, signing six executive orders aimed at lowering energy costs, reforming government operations, strengthening ethics rules, and addressing children’s online mental health.

Sherrill compared her Day One approach to President Donald Trump’s early use of executive authority, saying she promised voters immediate action.

“I promised the people of New Jersey that I would be on a mission to deliver starting Day One,” Sherrill said.

Congrats @mikiesherrill

Democrat Mikie Sherrill has been elected governor of New Jersey, defeating Republican Jack Ciattarelli, who was backed by Donald Trump. The former Navy pilot and congresswoman becomes the state’s second female governor and secures Democrats’ third straight gubernatorial win, the first such streak in 60 years.

Election Day saw brief disruptions from unfounded bomb threats in several counties. Sherrill campaigned as a centrist focused on freezing utility rates and opposing Trump’s threat to cancel the Hudson River tunnel project.

She faced scrutiny over her Naval Academy record but emphasized her military and prosecutorial background. Ciattarelli was criticized for his past business ties to opioid-related materials. Sherrill inherits a large budget and fiscal challenges left by outgoing Gov. Phil Murphy, as Democrats maintain control of the state Assembly.

What are your thoughts?

New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin said it was “highly inappropriate” for the U.S. Department of Justice to send federal election observers to the state, arguing the agency has not provided a legitimate reason for its involvement.

The DOJ announced it would deploy monitors to Passaic County following a request from the state Republican Party, which asked federal officials to oversee vote-by-mail ballot processing and election board access ahead of the November 4 gubernatorial race. The department said the goal is to ensure transparency, ballot security, and compliance with federal law.

Critics, including Platkin, say the move could intimidate voters and undermine confidence in local election officials. Passaic County, a diverse area that has recently shifted politically, is seen as a key battleground in the closely watched race.

While observers will also be sent to several counties in California, most of the focus is on New Jersey, where Democrats say the Justice Department’s intervention is unnecessary and politically motivated.

What are your thoughts?

A day after Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mikie Sherrill accused her Republican opponent of profiting & being partly responsible for the opioid epidemic, Jack Ciattarelli’s campaign announced plans to file a defamation lawsuit against her.

During the second and final debate, Sherrill claimed Ciattarelli’s former medical publishing company spread misinformation and propaganda that fueled the nation’s opioid crisis, saying he had “killed tens of thousands of people.”

Between 2003 and 2018, the company earned $12.2 million through a contract to produce continuing education materials for the University of Tennessee’s College of Pharmacy.

In 2021, NJ.com reported that some of those materials “appeared to downplay the dangers of opioids,” with much of the content funded by grants from pharmaceutical companies.

Go vote!

Authorities in New Jersey investigated multiple bomb threats targeting polling places across the state on Election Day, though all were determined to be unfounded, officials said.

Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of State Tahesha Way confirmed the threats were not credible, while Attorney General Matthew Platkin said they affected polling locations in Bergen, Essex, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, and Passaic counties — many of them in traditionally left-leaning towns and cities. Some sites briefly closed before reopening, and a few voters were redirected to alternate locations.

Platkin urged voters to remain confident in the integrity of the election, saying, “We will not tolerate any attempts to interfere with our elections.”

In Newark, police confirmed a bomb threat at a polling site on Gotthard Street was linked to phishing emails. The New Jersey Division of Elections, working with state and federal partners, continues to monitor and coordinate security efforts as residents cast their votes in the closely contested governor’s race between Mikie Sherrill and Jack Ciattarelli.

The employee wrote “I hope he’s dead” following Kirk’s fatal shooting at a Utah university event. The comment went viral on a right-wing subreddit, and a Facebook post calling out the salon has since received more than 10,000 likes.

Users online tracked down where she worked, flooding the business with threats — including phone calls saying they would bomb the salon or kill staff.

The harassment has left the salon struggling to attract customers, as many are now afraid of potential violence. To slow the abuse, the business has taken down its phone number from public listings.

What are your thoughts?

After years of debate, the Summit Common Council has approved a $1.2 million contract with Musco Sports Lighting LLC to install lights at Upper Tatlock and Investors Bank Fields, marking a major milestone in the decade-long Tatlock Redevelopment Plan.

Councilmember Kevin Smallwood called the vote “a big night for Summit sports,” emphasizing that the lights will improve scheduling flexibility and safety for local athletic programs.

However, the project continues to face opposition from nearby residents who worry about late-night noise and light pollution. Councilmember Michelle Kalmanson, the only member to vote against the measure, argued the city should first create a binding agreement with neighbors outlining usage hours and limits.

The project’s funding has also sparked controversy. In addition to $650,000 in city funding, the plan includes a $500,000 anonymous donation through the Summit Foundation, prompting concerns about transparency. Councilmember Claire Toth said anonymous gifts “lack accountability and can erode public trust,” though a donor later came forward, citing harassment toward those supporting the project as the reason for anonymity.

A new ordinance is being drafted by the Law and Labor Committee to regulate lighting use and address neighborhood concerns. No completion date has been set for the project.

Great job

A 15-year-old #Belleville HS student has been charged with 3rd degree arson and criminal mischief after l damaging a Chromebook as part of a dangerous TikTok challenge.

Emergency crews responded to the school Thursday morning after reports of smoke, discovering a smoldering laptop outside Room 219. The device had been removed by a staff member during a brief evacuation. The building was later deemed safe to reenter.

A joint investigation by #Bellevillepolice and fire officials determined the student intentionally manipulated the laptop's battery to create a fire hazard.

Officials are urging parents to speak with their children about the dangers of online trends, which they warn can result in serious injury or criminal charges.

Similar incidents have been reported in other school districts, including #Millburn, where officials say students are damaging Chromebooks in a trend that can cause battery fires and harm.

Have you heard?

Days before Election Day, former President Barack Obama visited Newark to rally support for Rep. Mikie Sherrill, the Democratic candidate in New Jersey’s governor’s race. Speaking to more than 2,000 people at Essex County College on Nov. 1, Obama urged voters to back Sherrill, calling her “a leader who will build a brighter future for New Jersey.”

Obama criticized the “mean-spiritedness” of the Trump administration and tied national issues like Gateway Tunnel funding cuts, ICE raids, and the government shutdown to New Jersey’s challenges. He also reminded voters that Sherrill’s opponent, Jack Ciattarelli, had praised Trump’s record, saying, “You don’t think there’s anything they could be doing better?”

The former president encouraged residents to take advantage of early voting or head to the polls on Election Day, adding, “You will not just elect Mikie Sherrill governor — you will set a glorious example for this nation.”

Sherrill, addressing the crowd after Obama, spoke about affordability, education, and equality, saying New Jersey must once again “answer the call to defend our values.” Other speakers included Sen. Cory Booker, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, and Gov. Phil Murphy.

The rally capped a string of high-profile appearances for Sherrill, whose campaign has been supported by national Democrats including Sens. Amy Klobuchar, Mark Kelly, and Chris Murphy. Recent polls show Sherrill holding a narrow lead over Ciattarelli as voters head to the polls on Nov. 4.

ShopRite celebrated the grand opening of its new West Caldwell location on Tuesday with a parade, marching band, and ribbon cutting.

The celebration began at the old ShopRite, which closed Saturday after 58 years, and continued a quarter-mile down Bloomfield Avenue to the new store at 900 Bloomfield Ave. Residents lined the streets to cheer as the parade passed before the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The new store features expanded Sunrise Kitchens with prepared meals, a pizza shop, sushi, Asian cuisine, and a hot buffet, along with Sunrise Cellars Wine, Beer & Spirits. It also includes a community room for cooking classes and full-service meat and seafood departments.

“It was important to us to include everyone in this grand opening,” said Dara Sblendorio, president of Sunrise ShopRite and a fourth-generation grocer. The store is open daily from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
