CAUGHT IN 4k! - While being escorted to dinner, I handed my phone to my friend to record from behind as we walked with the restaurant’s security team. We were walking through one of those narrow alleyways typical of Marrakech, the kind that often lead to tucked-away, beautiful restaurants. As we walked, we passed a group of men—who I believe were Moroccan—sitting in the alley. Out of nowhere, one of them shouted the N-word. At first, I ignored it. Not because I didn’t hear it, but because I didn’t want my friend (the one recording) to react. I know he doesn’t stand for that kind of language, and I didn’t want things to escalate. You can even tell in the video how visibly uncomfortable he was. @millie.bou and I just kept walking and went into the restaurant, but my other friend didn’t let it slide. He went back returned—alongside one of the restaurant’s manager —to confront the man who said it. I didn’t go with them. I don’t use the N-word, and I wasn’t about to give my energy to someone who thinks it’s okay to call me and my friend that. What made this moment even more shocking is that I travel a lot. I’m often out and about in different parts of the world, and this was the first time I’ve ever been called the N-word in public. It shook me. I chose peace—but I won’t pretend it didn’t leave a mark. Spat at, called the N-word and groped in less than 24 hours in Marrakesh! Am I still playing the victim card or this is another Marrakesh coincidence? This is my second time in Marrakesh - my first was 9 years ago with no issues other than the constant last minute price changes and inflation from service providers, once they learned we were from UK. It was an uncomfortable experience but this second time was far worse! #marrakech #morrocco
