“Mar” •• available •• please comment or email hi@KimRoseArt.com for art inquiries 💙

———————————-

This is the most expensive color, and no I’m not talking about the gold.

This color was once with more than gold, and only the richest artists could afford it.

Ultramarine blue, made from the rare stone lapis lazuli, mined unit in Afghanistan.

Artists treasured it like magic. But it was so expensive they had to beg patrons to pay for it separately.

Vermeer was obsessed with it, he used ultramarine in his shadows even when he could not afford bread.

Today we take blue for granted. But once it was a prayer, a sacrifice, a secret.

Caption inspired by video from @dark_history.by_sush ✨

——————————-

The painting I am creating in this video is “Mar”, a piece that is in my Mar y Sol collection. This series was inspired by my mother, Marisol, the woman who inspired me to become an artist.

Broken down, her name translates to:

“Mar” - sea
“Y” - and
“Sol” - sun

In Mar, I capture a balance of sea lovingly embraced in sun. The work draws on the tension and harmony between two opposing elements, celebrating both their contrasts and their unity. Like the larger Mar y Sol series, it reflects on the beauty found in the cycles of life and death, a theme rooted in my personal journey.

Creation of “Harmony” 48in x 24in Resin, ink, 24k gold Sold
This piece was created in my studio in Kyoto and was inspired by the bamboo forest. I used a Japanese gilding technique called “Sunago,” which means falling gold. It’s a traditional technique I learned in Kyoto during my residency, and it uses bamboo to push gold through a filter, creating a gold rain.

The tube I used only works with the purest gold, 24K or 23K. The soft movements remind me of the light filtering through the bamboo leaves. The green depth in these tiny pieces reminds me of the depth of the bamboo forest.

It has a bit of soil from the forest embedded into the piece. I actually forgot to get soil the first time I went and was devastated, so thank you @chatswithmax @markymarc_ @valbeegogirl for going back and securing my soil haha.

You’ve never seen art like this.
No AI was used to make it.
This is “Iris”, an art piece reborn every year.

This took a year to think of the concept, and then over a year to make.

This is “Iris”, one of the pieces featured in my New York show “Born to Live”.

Iris, named after the perennial flower, is an art piece reborn every year.

It changes every quarter of the year. On the last day of the year, Iris d*es. Then on the first day of the new year, Iris is gold, glowing and celebrating the new year. The cycle then repeats.

When painting, I always loved the way that the wet inks would lace together. I remember wishing that other people could see how beautiful it looks. Iris was created by recording various inks and the way they naturally play together. I then turned these videos into NFTs and hired an engineer to connect the different versions to timed data. To me, Iris is a beautiful and playful representation of the cycles in life.

A top asked question: how to paint with resin ✨

Materials:
• @art_resin (lil discount for you with code KIMROSE10)
• Measuring cups/buckets
• Mixing sticks
• Plastic tarp
• Propane torch or heat gun
• Wood panel or canvas
• Gloves + respirator
• Paper towels
• Rubbing alcohol
• Timer
• Dawn dish soap
• Leveler
• Tape

You can pour resin clear or add color using acrylic paint, resin pigments, or mica powders. I highly recommend doing a small test piece before your final artwork.

Before starting:
• Keep the room between 73 to 80°F.
• Make sure your surface is level.

Instructions:
1    Calculate how much resin you need at ArtResin.com/pages/calculator
2    Tarp your area and elevate your canvas using plastic cups or risers. Tape the back edges for easier cleanup later.
3    Put on gloves and a respirator.
4    Pour equal parts Part A + Part B into a mixing container.
5    Mix thoroughly for 5 minutes.
6    Transfer into a second container and continue mixing until the 8 minute mark.
7    Add color if desired in separate mixing cups
8    Pour onto your surface in an “S” shape and spread to fill gaps.
9    Around the 35 minute mark, pop bubbles using a heat gun or propane torch.
10    By the 40 minute mark, remove hairs or imperfections with tweezers or a toothpick.
11    Let cure overnight and enjoy your piece ✨

Resin is extremely sticky, so work as cleanly as possible. There can definitely be a learning curve, so be patient and have fun with it. I tried to write an extended tutorial but IG has a character limit, so I’ll answer resin questions in the comments :)

Life in Kyoto
I remember calling my dad after I got fired. I was ugly crying in the car. He told me he thought my attention was divided, and truthfully it was. I was working for a company while completely distracted with my vision to become an artist.

Also not pictured in this video, a year before being fired, my mom had passed away. She had always encouraged creativity growing up, which sparked my love for art. I’ve had this conversation with many people, but I believe a traumatic event like loosing someone you loved so much shatters your perspective on life. You realize how precious and fast life is. Nobody on this earth is promised tomorrow.

After I got fired, I decided I wouldn’t apply for any other jobs and instead pursue my passion of being an artist. That year (2018) a lot of things changed, and since then I have failed at least a thousand times. Some more gracefully than others, but after every failure I picked myself up and assessed “how can I learn and be better”.

I never had any doubts in my mind what I was made to do, and it is this. I live and breathe for my art and am beyond blessed to have others connect to it as well. I am eternally grateful to my collectors and followers for believing in my art and supporting living artists.

Is being an artist hard? Yes incredibly. But I think every job is if you push yourself hard enough. So I thought why not push myself in something I passionately love.

NEW STUDIO 💫

I remember the first art studio I moved into back in 2018. I saved up all of my money to afford first month, last month, security deposit. 400sq ft little loft, but very ambitious dreams.

If I sold art, I’d be able to stay another month.

Month 2, I sold a piece that covered next months rent. I was so excited, I ran to my neighbors store and told them the good news (I had never met him before, luckily he was very nice and got excited with me). Later, I told that collector how much his commission meant to me. We’re still friends today, and I’m actually working on another piece for him (it’s the green circle in the background).

Fast forward to current day. I moved into the largest studio yet for my art. 2000sq ft of sunlight and space to dream up more. I’m also fully booked till 2027. I am excited to put this studio to use.

I remain grateful for the countless learning lessons, late nights, and emotional rollercoaster of pursuing life as an artist. I remind myself that the things that stress me out now were once things I dreamed and prayed for.

Thank you, for believing in me and following the journey. I am grateful for you, every day. I am finally settled and new ideas have been blooming. I am excited to share new works to come xx

This painting is inspired by a love story.

A couple commissioned this piece who live by Bondi Beach in Australia. They frequently walk along the beach and told me all about its charm. The history. The calming hues and sounds. What a beautiful place to be in love. What a surreal place to live.

I have never been, but am extremely familiar with Bondi Beach and had already done extensive research on Sydney because of its beauty and because I have had collectors there previously.

They sent me some sand from the beach to embed into their painting, which is one of my favorite things to do. For me, it makes the piece feel that much more connected to its inspiration.

This painting has endless little details to enjoy when looking up close. It radiates calm and warmth.

Mini announcement 💫

40 minis will be dropping on June 27th at 9AM PT. Join my Inner Circle for access to the drop, link in bio xx

Next I’ll be adding 23k gold accents on these puppies. I love creating minis so much, it is one of the times I can very easily enter a flow state. I love testing something new in each series. These ones have laces of white mixed in with the gold and it is coming out beautifully. It looks like an iris, or the universe. Wrapped in a beautifully small package.

I only do minis once or twice a year, so if you’d like one please be sure to subscribe to my inner circle email list. The link is in my bio. These beauties sell out fast. The last monochrome “Apricity” mini series sold out in a record-breaking 3 minutes.

If you tried to get one in that drop but didn’t get one in time, please DM me or email hi@KimRoseArt.com.

As always, thank you for showing love on my work. I created these mini series years ago as a way of saying thank you to the people who are most engaged in my story. I am the artist I am today because of you xx
