The loneliest season of my life wasn’t when I was broke …

It was when my business was thriving.

After my divorce, I put my head down and poured everything into work.

The business was thriving.
Revenue was pouring in.
From the outside, it looked like I had everything figured out.

But behind the success, I still felt isolated, alone, and unfulfilled.

It took me longer than I’d like to admit to realize that money is just an amplifier, not a destination.

Today, when I think about “more,” it has very little to do with another dollar.

More love.
More purpose.
More peace.
More adventures with my wife.
More memories with my kids.
More people, worthy of building alongside.

Success without someone to share it with feels surprisingly empty.

What’s your “more”?

For years, I thought being a great CEO meant being the most dominant person in the room.

The smartest.
The toughest.
The most relentless.

Then I came across the idea behind Survival of the Friendliest.

After 16 years of building a business, I’ve realized that sustainable success can't be built by a dictator that manages through fear.

It’s built by a culture where people trust each other, respect one another, and rally around the same mission, vision, and values.

Could I have been more cutthroat over the years?

Probably.

It might’ve created a few short-term wins.

But I think it would’ve cost me something far more valuable.

Never bet against a young man with ambition.

The one bouncing around, trying to figure out what excites him, what challenges him, and what he’s actually great at.

He may not know how he’s going to do it …

But deep down, he knows he’ll be successful one day.

He has something most people eventually run out of ...

Time.

The most valuable asset of all.

Behind every great man is a woman who chooses to invest in him.

Someone who believes in him, even on the days he doesn't believe in himself.

Someone who invests in his health, his patience, his kindness, his humility, his gratitude, his sense of adventure, his happiness ...

His Future.

For me, that’s Julia.

She challenges me, encourages me, grounds me, and reminds me that success means very little if you don’t have someone incredible to share it with.

Thank you for investing so much into me. 🫶🏻

We’re looking for a few ambitious sales professionals who are willing to bet on themselves.

Not because recruiting is easy.

5 years ago, I hired a Life Coach.

Since then, I’ve invested nearly $200,000 into that relationship.

On paper, that probably sounds crazy.

But it’s been one of the highest-return investments I’ve ever made.

Not because he built my business for me.

Because he helped me become a better leader, husband, father, and human being.

He’s challenged the way I think.

He’s helped me manage my emotions.

He’s taught me patience when I wanted immediate results.

He’s helped me develop more gratitude, more ambition, and more creativity.

He’s celebrated my wins, held me accountable through my failures, and asked me the hard questions that most people avoid.

I don’t view my life coach as an expense.

I view him as a business partner in my life.

The greatest investments aren’t always in stocks, real estate, or businesses.

Sometimes, the best investment you can make is in becoming the kind of person capable of creating the life you want.

What’s been the highest-return investment you’ve ever made in yourself?

Some people are unforgettable.

Payton English was one of them.

He had a way of making people feel seen, valued, and genuinely cared for.

His confidence, creativity, and authenticity left an impact on everyone who knew him.

This reel is a small tribute to someone who made our team, and our lives, better.

Gone far too soon. Never forgotten.

Anybody remember Big Jeremy?

Sometimes I wonder if I post too many videos of myself.

Then I remember the version of me who avoided the camera at all costs.

I was embarrassed by my weight.
Insecure about my hair.
Facetune was my best friend.

So in 2023, I made a decision.

I was either going to keep making excuses…

Or finally get my life together.

It wasn’t easy.

I had to completely change my lifestyle.

But every sacrifice was worth it.

If you’re standing at a crossroads and you don’t like the person staring back at you in the mirror…

Please start today.

Your future self will thank you.

When I think back about all of the times I was truly happy ... it was when I was experiencing things for the very first time.

My first big watch purchase, starting my first company, landing my first big client, buying my dream car, becoming debt free, and eventually ... becoming the man in the mirror that I can truly be proud of.

Chasing THINGS without appreciating 'the journey' will leave you empty and alone ...

Trust me, that was me.

Thanks for having me on your podcast, @the_seanbarnes .

Over the past 16 years as a business owner, I've learned something.

The companies with the most to gain by poaching professionals from their direct competitors are often the ones with the biggest financial stakes on the table.

Wealth management firms. Venture capital firms. Private equity-backed companies.

Those organizations don't need another recruiter. They need a trusted partner who understands that high level revenue producers can influence the trajectory of an entire business.

That's the business I'm building. Not simply because it's lucrative, but because it's where I believe I can create the greatest impact.

My goal has never been to become the biggest search firm.

It's to become the firm that the world's best investors trust when the stakes are highest.

I've learned that the best opportunities in life rarely come from chasing money.

They come from creating so much value that the right opportunities naturally follow.

20 years ago, I thought success meant making more money.

Today, I think it means making better investments.

Not just in stocks or real estate …

In Yourself.

Over the past 20 years, these six investments have generated the greatest return on my life:

1. Invested in my skills.
2. Invested in my network.
3. Invested in assets.
4. Invested in people.
5. Invested in peace of mind.
6. Invested in adventure.

The order matters.

Your career can create income.
Income can create assets.
Assets can create opportunities.
But the people you surround yourself with, and the person you become, will determine whether any of it is actually worth it.

If I could go back and talk to my 22-year-old self, I’d tell him to spend less time chasing instant gratification and more time investing in the things that continue paying dividends for decades.

First, invest in yourself.
Then, invest in assets.
Eventually, invest in people.

What’s been the best investment you’ve ever made?

Last night, a 28-year-old young man I work with told me, “I want to grow up and be like you.”

That hit me harder than he probably realized.

Because I know what he sees.

He sees the business. The house. The cars. The vacations. My marriage. The nice things. The confidence that comes from finally having some success.

What he doesn’t see is everything it cost me to become this version of myself.

The fear.

The failures.

The anxiety and insecurity.

The years I spent trying to prove myself to people who probably weren’t even paying attention.

He is incredibly ambitious, competitive, confident and creative. I have zero doubt he’s going to be financially successful.

But when I talk to him, sometimes I find myself talking to him almost like I'm talking to my son.

I don’t want him to 'become' me.

I want him to become Better than me.

I want him to achieve the success without making all of my mistakes along the way.

I want him to understand that ambition is an incredible gift, but it can also become a dangerous master.

You can spend your entire life running toward money, status and validation without ever stopping to ask what you’re actually running from.

And you can win the game you thought you wanted to win… only to realize you sacrificed things that mattered more.

That’s why I think the people you choose to admire matter so much.

Find mentors who will show you their scars, not just their trophies.

Find people who will tell you what they would do differently, not just what they did right.

And when someone you respect has already walked the road ahead of you, don’t just study their success.

Study what it cost them to get there.

Larry Sanders has been with me since day one … long before Encore Search Partners became the company it is today.

Employee #1.
My Best Man.
One of my closest friends.
A Leader our entire team looks up to.

We’ve spent the past 14 years building this company, Together ... through challenges, victories, setbacks, and milestones I’ll never forget.

Watching someone who has invested so much into our people, our reputation, and our vision, reach a moment like this, is incredibly special.

This is one of the happiest announcements I’ll ever get to make.

Congratulations, Larry.

I wish someone had handed me this after my divorce.

It would’ve saved me years of learning everything the hard way.

If you know a man who’s rebuilding after divorce, heartbreak, failure, or simply a difficult season …

Send this to him.

Every man deserves someone who believes his best chapter hasn’t been written yet. 🙏🏼

Back in 2016, I made one of the best investments of my entire career.

I hired a headhunter on a $150,000 first year guarantee.

Over the next ten years, that investment has generated more than $80 million in revenue for our firm.

Great people aren’t an expense.

They’re an investment.

If you’re looking to confidentially recruit top revenue producers from your direct competitors, we’d love the opportunity to help you grow.

Rainmakers don't apply, they have to be headhunted.

Your child’s future is shaped by the people you invite into their life.

I can’t choose every friend my son will ever have.

But I can intentionally introduce him to men of purpose, character, and integrity.

That’s one of the greatest gifts a parent can give.

Be intentional.
