Jalen Brunson just put on an absolute clinic in the Finals, and when it was all said and done, it was the 6 foot 2 point guard who walked away with the ring while Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs went home 🔥 People love to frame these matchups as star versus star, and even though Brunson and the 7 foot 4 alien never truly guarded each other given how different their positions are, make no mistake about who imposed his will on this series. Brunson was simply unstoppable, averaging a monstrous 32.6 points per game across the Finals and saving his masterpiece for the closeout, dropping 45 points in Game 5 on the road to clinch it, the most ever by a Knick in a Finals game. He repeatedly knifed into the paint, floated shots right over Wemby’s massive contests, and got to the free throw line whenever he wanted. The Spurs threw everything they had at him, doubles, length, physicality, and none of it mattered.

The contrast in the biggest moments is exactly what made it so decisive, because while Wemby fought hard and put up his numbers, it was Brunson making the winning plays down the stretch in game after game. He hit the dagger floater in Game 5, drained shots over the longest defender on the planet, and was automatic from the line with a championship hanging in the balance. Wemby is a generational talent and his day is absolutely coming, but in this series, on this stage, Captain Clutch was the best player on the floor and he proved it when it counted most. He earned Finals MVP, he ended a 53 year drought, and he did it by refusing to be intimidated by size, length or hype. Brunson looked the future of the league dead in the eye and took the trophy anyway. That is what legends do, and the King of New York backed up every ounce of it 🏆

But this is not a eulogy. It's just the beginning.

LeBron James went to the NBA Finals at 22 years old and got swept by San Antonio. That was the beginning of years of LeBron slander. Talking heads wrote his legacy off before it was written.

For the 2026 Spurs specifically, Chris Paul would have been an incredibly valuable piece even if he wasn’t putting up star numbers anymore.

The biggest reason is leadership. The 2026 Spurs were built around an extremely young core led by Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper. Having one of the smartest point guards in NBA history to guide that group through big playoff moments would have been huge. Paul has always excelled at controlling pace, settling teams down during runs, and making sure everyone is in the right spot.

On the court, his chemistry with Wembanyama was already evident when they played together. Paul consistently found Wemby for easy baskets and helped maximize his strengths.
