During Shohei Ohtani’s 50/50 game in September 2024, a kid showed up with a sign that read: “I skipped math to watch history!”

Then Ohtani delivered one of the most iconic performances the game has ever seen, and during the game, cameras caught the kid and the sign in the background of the moment.

The image was later turned into an official baseball card, permanently tying that kid to one of the most historic nights in MLB history.

The versatile infielder joined the Jays organization when his career was at an all-time low. He’d recently just been released by the Oakland Athletics, and there was no guarantee he would ever get back to the Majors. The stress was almost too much for Clement, who admitted in a recent Players’ Tribune column that there was a moment when he broke down crying in front of his mom 😔

It was his mom’s advice, however, that helped turn him into the player Blue Jays fans get to see today 😤

Shohei is actually a once in a generation player 😳

Shohei Ohtani isn’t just the best baseball player alive — he’s doing something that the sport genuinely thought was impossible in the modern era.

Pitching and hitting at an elite level in MLB simultaneously isn’t just hard — it’s something teams, scouts, and analysts had essentially written off as a relic of a bygone era. Ohtani didn’t just bring it back, he brought it back at an MVP level on both sides, which is the kind of thing that makes you question everything you thought you knew about player development and specialization.

The records he’s broken, the hardware he’s collected, and the sheer joy he plays with make him must-watch TV every single time he steps on the field. Future generations are going to look back at this era and not fully believe the stats were real. He’s that good.

Major League Baseball has been using the Automated Ball-Strike Challenge System (ABS) this season

ABS CHALLENGE RULES:

- Each team will get two challenges and can keep them if they’re successful

- Challenges can only be initiated by a pitcher, catcher, or batter, and the request must come right after the pitch

- To signal a challenge, the pitcher, catcher, or batter will tap his hat or helmet to let the umpire know

- No help from the dugout or other players on the field is allowed

- In each extra inning, a team will be awarded a challenge if it has none remaining entering the inning
