A Savannah chef has been named North America’s Best Female Chef for 2026.
@mashamabailey of @thegreysavannah received the honor from @theworlds50best an organization that recognizes some of the most influential chefs and restaurants across the globe.
In announcing the award, The World’s 50 Best praised Bailey for her role in preserving and redefining Southern and Black American food culture.
The recognition adds to a growing list of accomplishments for the acclaimed chef, whose influence now extends beyond Savannah. Bailey recently opened @larretparis by The Grey in Paris, bringing Southern cuisine to an international audience.
The Grey has become one of Savannah’s most celebrated restaurants, helping put the city’s food scene on the national stage.
Congratulations to Chef Mashama Bailey on another major achievement.

What are your thoughts?
Several of the city’s licensed horse-drawn carriage operators filed a lawsuit against Savannah this week, arguing the heat ordinance is now illegal under a new Georgia state law.
The ordinance, passed in 2025, prevents carriage tours from operating when temperatures reach 85 degrees or the heat index hits 100. Operators say the restriction is one of the strictest in the country and is costing businesses thousands of dollars during peak tourism weekends.
The lawsuit points to a state law signed in April that prohibits local governments from regulating livestock on public roads, a category that includes horses.
City officials maintain the ordinance is still enforceable, while carriage operators are asking the court to block the rule entirely.

Some SCAD student workers are raising concerns after being told their summer jobs would no longer be classified as hourly positions.
Students hired as Pre-College Assistants (PCAs) for SCAD’s summer programs say they originally accepted positions advertised as hourly student employment. According to documents reviewed by WTOC, workers were later informed that the roles would instead be classified as independent contractor positions paid through a flat stipend.
The revised agreement reduced projected earnings and eliminated opportunities for overtime, according to students interviewed by @wtoc11
An employment attorney who reviewed the documents told the station that the responsibilities outlined in the role raise questions about whether the workers should be classified as employees rather than independent contractors. The attorney said the arrangement “doesn’t pass the sniff test” and could potentially expose the college to legal challenges if workers are found to be misclassified.

Jonathan Dover, 37, was riding his bike near Bull Street and Derenne Avenue around 3:30 a.m. on Sept. 8, 2024, when he was struck by a vehicle. He was taken to Memorial Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Police later asked the public for help identifying a white car connected to the crash. On Feb. 19, 2026, Mikeara Gibbons was arrested in connection to the case.
According to court documents, Gibbons was allegedly driving 54 mph in a 40 mph zone at the time of the crash and later replaced the vehicle’s windshield in an attempt to conceal evidence. She now faces charges including homicide by vehicle, hit and run, tampering with evidence, and speeding.
