What are your thoughts?

ICE is considering a 470,000-square-foot vacant warehouse off Route 46 in Roxbury as a potential site for a new immigrant detention center, triggering rapid pushback from local officials and advocacy groups.

According to organizers, a leaked ICE document revealed the exact address of the proposed site and a 9 a.m. site visit scheduled with less than 12 hours’ notice. By early morning, multiple organizations were on the ground conducting surveillance to confirm the visit and document activity. Black SUVs believed to be carrying federal officials were spotted outside the warehouse as the tour took place.

Township leaders said they were not notified in advance. After learning of the visit, Roxbury officials and the police chief went to the site and met with ICE representatives and the building owner to raise concerns about public safety, traffic, limited police and volunteer fire resources, and water and sewer capacity.

The night before the visit, the Roxbury Township Council unanimously passed a resolution opposing an ICE detention center in the township. Demonstrators from the No ICE North Jersey Alliance also protested near the site along Route 46.

Advocacy groups say their next step is to press the Town Council to change zoning ordinances immediately to block the project before it advances. Township officials said site selection is still months away but emphasized transparency and resident safety as priorities. The warehouse, built just a few years ago, remains vacant. ICE and leasing agents did not immediately comment.

From today👇

The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office is investigating a firearm discharge involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Roxbury Township on Monday morning.

Acting Attorney General Jennifer Davenport said the incident involved ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations unit and happened around 7 a.m. in the Landing section of the township. No injuries were reported.

Witnesses said the incident occurred on Landing Road near the Lake Hopatcong Foundation building. A dashcam video posted online appears to show an officer pointing a gun at a man who had exited a pickup truck and was ordered to get on the ground.

Davenport said the scene was secured with help from the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office and the Morris County Sheriff’s Office, and that the state’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability is conducting an independent investigation.

The incident shut down Landing Road for much of the day and sparked widespread rumors online. Officials said the investigation is ongoing.

What are your thoughts?

President Donald Trump announced he is terminating the Gateway Project, a multibillion-dollar plan to construct a new rail tunnel between New Jersey and Manhattan.

At a White House event, Trump said the project — long championed by Sen. Chuck Schumer — would be “terminated on a permanent basis,” calling it a waste of “billions and billions of dollars.” The decision follows the federal government’s withdrawal of funding for the project 15 days earlier, during the ongoing shutdown.

Schumer slammed the move on X, calling Gateway “the most important infrastructure project in America,” and describing Trump’s decision as “pure spite and stupidity.”

Sen. Cory Booker and Rep. Andy Kim issued a joint statement calling the move “a direct attack on New Jersey,” emphasizing that the project has historically enjoyed bipartisan support.

Gov. Phil Murphy’s office declined to comment.

Have you heard?

A 28-year-old Roselle man was arrested last week after allegedly kidnapping a woman from the County College of Morris and holding her handcuffed inside his car, authorities said.

The case began Dec. 5 after the woman’s parents reported her missing when she failed to pick up her children and could not be reached. Police traced her last location to the college in Randolph, where officers found her car and a damaged phone. Surveillance footage showed a man later identified as Akram Elsayed approaching her and leaving the parking lot in his vehicle.

Later that night, police located Elsayed’s car in Andover Township and arrested him after a multi-agency pursuit. Officers found the woman handcuffed inside the vehicle and recovered a handgun near the driver’s door. She was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Elsayed faces numerous charges, including kidnapping, carjacking, burglary, and multiple counts of aggravated sexual assault, and is being held at the Morris County Correctional Facility. Prosecutors said the incident was targeted and posed no ongoing threat to students or staff.

What are your thoughts?

A Rockaway Township teacher has resigned after receiving death threats in the wake of a Facebook post about Charlie Kirk.

The Board of Education confirmed the resignation of Elizabeth McFarland Clark, a fifth-grade math teacher at Katherine D. Malone Elementary, during its Sept. 17 meeting. Her Sept. 10 post, written the day of Kirk’s assassination in Utah, included the phrase “Some people have to die - buh bye.”

Clark said her personal information was doxxed within 20 minutes, leading to online harassment, circulation of photos of her daughter, and threats to her life. She told the Daily Record she stepped down because she feared for her safety and believed her presence at school could endanger students.

Meanwhile, some locals say police should be doing more to protect free speech, arguing that threats and online intimidation are creating a chilling effect for residents who speak out publicly.

A Morris County man has been arrested in connection with an illegal gambling ring linked to organized crime, according to the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office.

Nicholas Raimo, 25, of East Hanover, is one of 14 people charged in a sports betting operation allegedly run by Joseph M. “Little Joe” Perna, 55, of Fairfield — believed to be a soldier in the Lucchese crime family. Several of Perna’s relatives and associates were also charged.

State Police launched the investigation in January 2024 and found the enterprise was based in Essex and Bergen counties. Authorities say the ring moved roughly $2 million in gambling proceeds between 2022 and 2024.

Raimo is accused of acting as a high-level agent who managed his own sportsbooks within the operation. He faces charges including racketeering, conspiracy, promoting gambling, possession of gambling records, and money laundering. If convicted on all counts, he could face up to 60 years in prison and more than $800,000 in fines.

Tracey Silverschotz, 62, said the district denied her request for a math-teaching assignment with a smaller class size and other accommodations despite documented hearing loss. The jury returned its verdict Jan. 29 in state court in Morristown, New Jersey.

The award totals about $869,000, including roughly $582,000 for economic losses, $286,000 for emotional distress, and $1,000 in punitive damages, according to Silverschotz’s attorney, Erica Domingo.

Silverschotz, who began teaching in Randolph in 2001 and was nominated seven times for Teacher of the Year, alleged she was discouraged from applying for a smaller-class math position in 2020 and later denied disability retirement during the COVID-19 pandemic. After attempting to return to work with medical accommodation requests, she said she was placed in rotating “floater” assignments and later put on improvement and corrective action plans.

In a statement, the district, represented by attorney Eric Harrison, said it respects the jury’s decision but plans to appeal, adding that any final judgment would be covered by its liability insurance.

A Morris County teacher has been arrested for allegedly sending sexual messages and photos to a 13-year-old former student over more than a year, according to court documents.

Lorri Ann Willis, 45, of Hackettstown, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and luring after investigators said she exchanged explicit messages and images with the student via text and Snapchat from June 2024 through October 2025. The affidavit states Willis sent photos of herself in a bra, asked the student to send pictures back, and left a ring as a gift in the student’s mailbox.

The case surfaced on October 20, when Chester police notified the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office. Authorities then conducted a recorded conversation during which Willis allegedly spoke in a sexual manner and agreed to meet the student.

Willis, a teacher at Black River Middle School in Chester, has been suspended and is being held at the Morris County Correctional Facility.

Chester Superintendent William Kochis said the district took immediate action upon learning of her arrest and emphasized that there is no indication of any ongoing risk to students.
