Dangerous Intersection👇

A group of good Samaritans sprang into action Tuesday after a tractor-trailer carrying 20 tons of flour flipped over and caught fire at the intersection of Camp Swatara Road & Pine Grove Road in Berks County.

Surveillance video shows nearly a dozen people rushing to help the driver escape the wreckage.

For Elizabeth Bishop, who lives at the intersection, the crash was sadly no surprise. Over the past 11 years, her home has been hit 4 times, her cars destroyed, and the guardrail repeatedly knocked out.

The intersection has seen a series of serious accidents, including 2 crashes in a single day, a drunk driver incident in October, a skid in November, and a milk truck running over a car in December. The most devastating came in 2023, when a man had to be airlifted and later lost both arms after a crash.

Despite efforts, including calls and emails to PennDOT and state representatives, little has changed.

What are your thoughts?

A 22-year-old former teacher and coach at Berks Catholic High School, Henry C. Pilliod of Sinking Spring, has been charged after an investigation found he had an inappropriate relationship with a 17-year-old student.

Officials say the relationship began in late 2024 with electronic communications, escalated to the exchange of nude photos and videos in January 2025, and included multiple sexual encounters between December 2024 and February 2025.

Pilliod volunteered as a tennis coach from August 2024 to March 2025 and briefly worked as a substitute teacher in early 2025.

He was charged on August 6, 2025 with institutional sexual assault, corruption of minors, unlawful contact with a minor, and criminal use of communications facilities. He surrendered to detectives the following day and is awaiting arraignment.

What are your thoughts?

Developers plan to demolish most of the Berkshire Mall in Wyomissing and replace it with a new open-air retail complex.

The property is under contract to be sold to Abrams Realty Group of Montgomery County. Developer Peter Abrams said his company intends to raze the 910,000-square-foot mall — except for Boscov’s, which will remain — and replace it with big-box stores and smaller retail pad sites.

Wyomissing Borough Manager Michele Bare said early sketches show two to four large retailers and six smaller pads along Woodland and State Hill roads. Abrams said his firm is in talks with several national chains, including some current tenants, but declined to share names while negotiations continue.

The project follows years of decline at the Berkshire Mall, which has suffered from sinkholes, disrepair, and widespread vacancies since being purchased in 2020 by Namdar Realty Group. The property became the subject of legal action after borough officials forced Namdar to repair stormwater systems and fix safety issues.

Local leaders, including State Sen. Judy Schwank, have pushed for redevelopment, calling the mall “too important to the region” to remain neglected.

Abrams said construction could begin in 10 to 16 months, pending permits and site plans, and will include a complete overhaul of parking and stormwater infrastructure.

While some residents feel nostalgic about the mall’s past, Wyomissing officials support the plan, calling it a necessary and cost-effective step toward revitalizing the property and restoring it as a local retail destination.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for Bucks County, Berks, and parts of Montgomery County beginning 2 p.m. Thursday, July 31, lasting into Friday morning.

The region could see 1–3 inches of rain, with localized totals of 5–7 inches and rainfall rates topping 2 inches per hour, creating the risk of flash flooding.

A flood watch means conditions are favorable for flooding but it is not yet imminent. Residents are urged to monitor weather updates, avoid flooded roads, and follow the “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” rule: even 6 inches of moving water can knock over an adult, and 1 foot can sweep away a car.

Thanksgiving Eve — nicknamed “Drinksgiving” by Berks County police — brings some of the largest bar crowds of the year as college students return home and families gather for the holiday.

Exeter Township Police Sgt. David Bentz said the night routinely sees heavy drinking and packed bars: “Kids are home from college, folks are off on Thursday, and it becomes a night where a lot of people head out to drink.”

To prepare, departments across the county will deploy extra DUI patrols funded in part by PennDOT. Officers will focus on areas near bars, social clubs, and known trouble spots.

Bentz urged people to plan ahead: use Uber, Lyft, or a designated driver. “DUI is a totally preventable crime,” he said.

The enforcement push won’t end with Drinksgiving — Black Friday, holiday parties, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve are also major DUI crackdowns.

Police will use checkpoints when appropriate, and Bentz reminded drivers that the most effective protection against impaired motorists is simple:
“Wear your seatbelt as though your life depends on it — because it really does.”

Have you heard?

State officials are investigating the deaths of hundreds of snow geese across the Lehigh Valley region, with avian influenza (bird flu) suspected as the cause.

The latest incident occurred at a quarry in Lower Nazareth Township, where officials estimate around 400 snow geese were affected. The Pennsylvania Game Commission is coordinating the testing, removal, and disposal of the birds as part of a broader regional response.

Officials say the deaths are part of a wider resurgence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) that has impacted multiple communities across eastern Pennsylvania since late 2024. Earlier outbreaks in Lower Nazareth and @uppermactwp grew from hundreds of dead birds to thousands, prompting authorities to label the Lehigh Valley an epicenter of the virus’s return.

The spread has led to preventive closures at regional zoos, increased monitoring of domestic poultry and dairy farms, and heightened coordination between wildlife, agricultural, and health agencies. While the risk to humans remains low, officials urge residents throughout the region to avoid contact with sick or dead birds and report sightings to state authorities.

State officials say the virus continues to circulate at lower levels and are emphasizing caution as migratory birds move through the region.

The video used was not of the dead birds, just a visual representation of the birds in the Quarry which is a yearly occurrence.

What are your thoughts?

PennDOT’s plans for a single-lane roundabout at the intersection of Route 662 and Oley Turnpike Road, a spot long plagued by crashes and safety concerns.

PennDOT officials said the project aims to reduce serious accidents and fatalities, with the design shifting slightly west to limit impact on farmland, environmental features, and historic landmarks. While some residents voiced support — noting roundabouts have proven effective elsewhere — concerns remain over construction detours, particularly with a nearby historic covered bridge that has already suffered repeated damage.

Public feedback will be accepted through Oct. 20, 2025, and construction is not expected to begin until 2028.

What are your thoughts?

While Berks hasn’t seen large-scale ICE raids, growing immigration enforcement nationwide is fueling fear among local immigrant communities. Advocates report people skipping English classes, avoiding public spaces, and even leaving the area as ICE activity increases across PA.

Reading officials have pledged not to assist in federal immigration arrests, but cooperation still exists at the county level. ICE has been detaining individuals at courthouses and workplaces, including some with minor offenses or expired legal status.

Many residents under Temporary Protected Status are also at risk, as federal protections for several countries are set to expire by 2026. The uncertainty has led to job losses, rising anxiety, & reduced participation in community programs.

Though no major raids have hit Berks, the fear of being swept up in federal enforcement is changing everyday life for many.

A Reading man is facing felony charges after allegedly stealing over $1,100 worth of lottery tickets from the gas station at a Giant supermarket in Spring Township.

Chad A. Roeder, 44, of Gregg Street, was charged with retail theft and receiving stolen property. He was arraigned Friday and remains in Berks County Jail on $15,000 bail.

According to police, Giant’s security team contacted authorities on July 28 after discovering a $1,170 shortage in lottery ticket sales. An internal investigation found that from June 6 to July 11, lottery ticket inventory decreased on 14 separate days—without corresponding sales in the system.

After reviewing surveillance footage, investigators identified Roeder as the suspect. He later admitted to the thefts during an interview with store security.

The Berks County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that a missing Reading woman and her one-year-old son were found dead in Ontelaunee Township, and both deaths have been ruled homicides.

Investigators discovered the body of Geraldina Peguero-Mancebo, 31, in a field off East Huller Lane on the night of Sept. 19. The following day, her son, Jeyden Junior Peguero, was found about 150 yards away in a marshy area. Autopsies conducted Sept. 22 confirmed their identities and causes of death.

The case is connected to another homicide days earlier. On Sept. 13, police found Junior Cabrera-Colon, 31, who lived with Peguero-Mancebo and her son, shot dead near Baer Park in Reading. Investigators later arrested Jose Luis Rodriguez, 61, who confessed to killing Cabrera-Colon and has been charged with murder and related crimes.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the killings of Peguero-Mancebo and her son. District Attorney John T. Adams said he will release more details at a press conference on Sept. 29.

What are your thoughts?

Construction has started on a 930,000-square-foot warehouse along Route 222 in Maidencreek Township, as Pennsylvania transportation officials prepare a nearly $90 million plan to widen and modernize the busy highway.

The warehouse, approved in 2023 after a year of hearings and lawsuits, sparked local opposition over fears of heavier truck traffic and more crashes. The site sits on a stretch of Route 222 that already averages about 26,000 daily trips, according to PennDOT.

The developer, Maiden Creek Associates, L.P., was required to modify the site’s access points to improve safety, work that has already been completed.

A recent study by the Center for Rural Pennsylvania found Berks County saw a 45% increase in warehouses between 2013 and 2023, with growing congestion on roads not built for tractor-trailers.

Planned PennDOT improvements include a $9 million roundabout at Route 222 and Long Lane in Maxatawny Township, expected to finish by September 2027, and a full reconstruction and widening of a 5-mile stretch from Schaeffer Road to the Kutztown Bypass in Richmond Township. The project will expand the road to four lanes, add a median barrier, include a new roundabout, and replace a bridge.

Bidding for the Route 222 reconstruction is expected to begin in late 2026 or early 2027.

What are your thoughts?

City of Reading officials are proposing a 6% property tax increase for 2026 to help close budget gaps and avoid deeper financial trouble. The $284 million proposed budget would raise about $2 million in new revenue but still requires pulling $12 million from reserve funds, a move that could risk the city’s long-term stability after exiting Pennsylvania’s Act 47 financial distress program.

Finance Director Jamar Kelly said the hike was a “difficult but necessary” step to maintain essential services like police, fire, and public works. If approved in December, the tax rate would rise to 19.261 mills, meaning the owner of a $100,000 home would pay roughly $1,926 in city property taxes.

About 70% of the budget funds salaries, benefits, and healthcare for city employees. The proposal also includes funding for a new HVAC system at City Hall and a police and fire training academy.

Auditor Maria Rodriguez urged the city to find alternative revenue streams beyond property taxes, while Managing Director Jack Gombach said deeper cuts would require layoffs and service reductions.

Meanwhile, Berks County officials say they do not plan to raise property taxes for 2026, opting instead for departmental spending cuts of 3% next year and 5% in 2027.
