Long before becoming a Hollywood icon, Rob Reiner began his career as a 17-year-old apprentice at @theaterbcp in New Hope in 1964, an experience he often credited as formative.

Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead Sunday at their Los Angeles home in what police described as an apparent double homicide. Their son, Nick Reiner, has been arrested and charged in connection with the killings, according to the LAPD.

Playhouse officials said Reiner frequently expressed gratitude for the training he received in New Hope and fondly recalled his time there. He was part of a notable season that included performers like Alan Alda, Liza Minnelli, and Merv Griffin, and joined a long list of alumni — including Grace Kelly and Robert Redford — who launched major careers after apprenticing at the theater.

As his career flourished, Reiner continued to speak highly of the Bucks County Playhouse and its lasting influence on his life and work.

The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission says the Washington Crossing Bridge is suffering from major structural, operational and safety problems as officials begin deciding what should happen to the 120-year-old span.

In a newly released video, the commission outlined long-standing issues with the toll-free bridge that links Mercer County, New Jersey and Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The bridge was built in 1905, predates modern automobile traffic and now has narrow 7.5-foot travel lanes, limited load capacity, frequent vehicle strikes and aging foundations.

The video is part of a multi-year “Washington Crossing Bridge Alternatives Analysis,” launched in August 2024, to study options for improving safety, mobility and pedestrian access while protecting nearby businesses. Officials must also decide whether revenue from the commission’s toll bridges should be used to fund major work on the aging structure.

Two public scoping meetings are scheduled:

Feb. 10, 5:30–8 p.m. at The Crossing Church in Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania.

Feb. 11, 5:30–8 p.m. at Union Fire Company and Rescue Squad in Titusville, New Jersey.

More details on the study are available through the commission’s Washington Crossing Bridge project site.

Developers plan to demolish most of the Berkshire Mall in Wyomissing and replace it with a new open-air retail complex.

The property is under contract to be sold to Abrams Realty Group of Montgomery County. Developer Peter Abrams said his company intends to raze the 910,000-square-foot mall — except for Boscov’s, which will remain — and replace it with big-box stores and smaller retail pad sites.

Wyomissing Borough Manager Michele Bare said early sketches show two to four large retailers and six smaller pads along Woodland and State Hill roads. Abrams said his firm is in talks with several national chains, including some current tenants, but declined to share names while negotiations continue.

The project follows years of decline at the Berkshire Mall, which has suffered from sinkholes, disrepair, and widespread vacancies since being purchased in 2020 by Namdar Realty Group. The property became the subject of legal action after borough officials forced Namdar to repair stormwater systems and fix safety issues.

Local leaders, including State Sen. Judy Schwank, have pushed for redevelopment, calling the mall “too important to the region” to remain neglected.

Abrams said construction could begin in 10 to 16 months, pending permits and site plans, and will include a complete overhaul of parking and stormwater infrastructure.

While some residents feel nostalgic about the mall’s past, Wyomissing officials support the plan, calling it a necessary and cost-effective step toward revitalizing the property and restoring it as a local retail destination.

Ceisler said the move removes what he described as “extraordinary powers” that allowed deputies to stop and detain individuals suspected of being in the country without authorization. While the decision ends the sheriff’s direct involvement, Ceisler emphasized it does not prevent ICE from operating in Bucks County and does not make the county a sanctuary jurisdiction.

The White House criticized the decision, saying it would make it harder for federal authorities to remove dangerous criminals. Ceisler responded that his office will continue cooperating and communicating with ICE and other law enforcement agencies.

Ceisler also distanced himself from Philadelphia Sheriff Rochelle Bilal, who recently suggested arresting ICE agents operating in the city, calling her approach inappropriate. Meanwhile, Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small said his city will continue supporting its immigrant community while urging ICE to operate lawfully and respectfully.

What are your thoughts?

The Pennsylvania House of Representatives has passed a Universal Background Check bill (HB 1593) by a 104–99 vote, aiming to close the state’s “long gun loophole” that allows private sales of rifles and shotguns without background checks.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Perry Warren (D–Bucks County), would require background checks for all firearm sales, including private transactions, gun shows, and online purchases.

“House Bill 1593 will make background checks consistent, comprehensive, and effective,” Warren said. “There’s no rational reason for the long gun loophole to continue.”

Under current law, background checks are only required for handguns and sales through licensed dealers. Warren noted that Pennsylvania averages 1,600 firearm deaths annually, and many high-profile mass shootings have involved long guns.

The bill received bipartisan support and now moves to the State Senate for consideration.

Advocacy group CeaseFire PA praised the move, saying universal background checks “save lives by deterring and preventing people with histories of violence from obtaining firearms.”

State officials are investigating the deaths of hundreds of snow geese across the Lehigh Valley region, with avian influenza (bird flu) suspected as the cause.

The latest incident occurred at a quarry in Lower Nazareth Township, where officials estimate around 400 snow geese were affected. The Pennsylvania Game Commission is coordinating the testing, removal, and disposal of the birds as part of a broader regional response.

Officials say the deaths are part of a wider resurgence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) that has impacted multiple communities across eastern Pennsylvania since late 2024. Earlier outbreaks in Lower Nazareth and @uppermactwp grew from hundreds of dead birds to thousands, prompting authorities to label the Lehigh Valley an epicenter of the virus’s return.

The spread has led to preventive closures at regional zoos, increased monitoring of domestic poultry and dairy farms, and heightened coordination between wildlife, agricultural, and health agencies. While the risk to humans remains low, officials urge residents throughout the region to avoid contact with sick or dead birds and report sightings to state authorities.

State officials say the virus continues to circulate at lower levels and are emphasizing caution as migratory birds move through the region.

-

The video used was not of the dead birds, just a visual representation of the birds in the Quarry which is a yearly occurrence.

Two Lehigh Valley men are among 17 people charged this year in Bucks County as part of an internet crimes initiative targeting sex offenders, authorities said.

According to the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office, David Sheregi, 31, of Bethlehem, and Warren Batz, 38, of Slatington, each drove to Bensalem believing they were meeting 13-year-old girls for sex. In both cases, undercover Bensalem Township police officers posed as minors through online chats.

Prosecutors say Sheregi began communicating with someone he thought was a 13-year-old girl on Sept. 6, sending explicit photos and arranging a meeting. He was arrested Oct. 1 and charged with attempted assault of a minor, unlawful contact, child abuse, and related crimes.

Batz allegedly started messaging what he believed was a 13-year-old on May 3, offering money for sex and calling her his “sugar baby.” He was arrested July 3 and faces charges including unlawful contact with a minor, solicitation of child abuse, and luring a child.

Bensalem Township police say their ongoing Internet Crimes Against Children investigations have led to 17 arrests so far this year, including six for possession or distribution of cp.

Forecasters say the region may see light snow this weekend, with total accumulations expected to stay under an inch. Two weak storm systems could bring flurries Saturday and another chance of snow Sunday, though most areas may see snow briefly change to rain.

The National Weather Service warns that a significant drop in temperatures will follow. Beginning Sunday, an arctic blast is expected to bring below-freezing daytime highs and overnight lows in the single digits and teens through midweek.

Strong winds will make conditions feel even colder, with wind chills dipping into the single digits or below zero at times. Road crews have already begun treating streets to prevent icy conditions.

While major snowfall is not expected, residents are urged to prepare for prolonged cold and hazardous wind chills.

Construction has started on a 930,000-square-foot warehouse along Route 222 in Maidencreek Township, as Pennsylvania transportation officials prepare a nearly $90 million plan to widen and modernize the busy highway.

The warehouse, approved in 2023 after a year of hearings and lawsuits, sparked local opposition over fears of heavier truck traffic and more crashes. The site sits on a stretch of Route 222 that already averages about 26,000 daily trips, according to PennDOT.

The developer, Maiden Creek Associates, L.P., was required to modify the site’s access points to improve safety, work that has already been completed.

A recent study by the Center for Rural Pennsylvania found Berks County saw a 45% increase in warehouses between 2013 and 2023, with growing congestion on roads not built for tractor-trailers.

Planned PennDOT improvements include a $9 million roundabout at Route 222 and Long Lane in Maxatawny Township, expected to finish by September 2027, and a full reconstruction and widening of a 5-mile stretch from Schaeffer Road to the Kutztown Bypass in Richmond Township. The project will expand the road to four lanes, add a median barrier, include a new roundabout, and replace a bridge.

Bidding for the Route 222 reconstruction is expected to begin in late 2026 or early 2027.

What are your thoughts?

City of Reading officials are proposing a 6% property tax increase for 2026 to help close budget gaps and avoid deeper financial trouble. The $284 million proposed budget would raise about $2 million in new revenue but still requires pulling $12 million from reserve funds, a move that could risk the city’s long-term stability after exiting Pennsylvania’s Act 47 financial distress program.

Finance Director Jamar Kelly said the hike was a “difficult but necessary” step to maintain essential services like police, fire, and public works. If approved in December, the tax rate would rise to 19.261 mills, meaning the owner of a $100,000 home would pay roughly $1,926 in city property taxes.

About 70% of the budget funds salaries, benefits, and healthcare for city employees. The proposal also includes funding for a new HVAC system at City Hall and a police and fire training academy.

Auditor Maria Rodriguez urged the city to find alternative revenue streams beyond property taxes, while Managing Director Jack Gombach said deeper cuts would require layoffs and service reductions.

Meanwhile, Berks County officials say they do not plan to raise property taxes for 2026, opting instead for departmental spending cuts of 3% next year and 5% in 2027.

- Follow for more #local news 🚁 @berksnostalgia #pennsylvania #berkscountypa #berkscounty #panews #readingpa #berkspa #townsofpennsylvania

Interstate 78 eastbound in Lower Saucon Township was shut down overnight after a late-night crash involving two tractor-trailers. FYI👇

Three African cats escaped from the Cricket Wildlife Center in District Township, Berks County, after strong overnight winds brought down trees and damaged their enclosure, the center said.

Owner Melissa Bescant told *lehighvalleylive.com* that the elderly cats are “very sweet” and not a threat to people or pets but are likely frightened and hiding nearby. The servals, native to sub-Saharan Africa, escaped from the property on Bitting Road during Wednesday night’s windstorm, which toppled ash trees weakened by the invasive emerald ash borer.

Search efforts for the animals were ongoing Thursday afternoon.
