Starting in 2028 the PGA Tour will go to a “Championship” and “Challenger” model, essentially creating a two-tier system. Championship events will have the $20 million+ purses but, crucially feature 120-man fields WITH A CUT and not the 70-80, no-cut model we’ve seen in Signature events. This is a return to a tried-and-true model that’s worked for golf tournaments for decades and a reversal of the overreaction to LIV. Roughly 90 players will keep their Championship status at the end of the year with the top 20ish finishers from the Challenger series being promoted. The TOUR Championship will also move around from course to course which is great news because Atlanta is just too damn hot in August.

UPDATE: The PGA Tour has confirmed this rule exists, but no action has been taken yet in Rory’s case because the season is still ongoing.

Rory will fail to meet the PGA Tour’s 15-event minimum this year, but apparently will NOT be penalized.

There is an “extenuating circumstances” clause that the Tour can use at its discretion, and they’re choosing to do so for Rory this year.

Wyndham Clark survived one of the most hostile crowds in recent U.S. Open history to capture the title at Shinnecock Hills. 🏆

Fans cheered his mistakes, groaned at his good shots, and several hecklers were reportedly removed by police as the pressure mounted. 😳

Clark entered Sunday with a six-shot lead and nearly watched it disappear before grinding out a one-shot victory.

Even Brandel Chamblee said he had never seen an American golfer receive that kind of treatment on American soil, while Scottie Scheffler admitted the crowd may have gone too far. 👎

What makes the story even crazier is that Clark’s sports psychologist, Julie Elion, who NBC highlighted throughout the week for helping him manage his mental game, reportedly left the course during the final round because she couldn’t handle the atmosphere herself. 🤦‍♂️

Clark still had to lean on the lessons she taught him while battling both the crowd and his own nerves down the stretch.

But it’s hard not to wonder what message that sends when the person responsible for helping athletes stay calm under pressure heads for the exits during the biggest moment of her client’s career. 🤷‍♂️
