Starting in 2028 the PGA Tour will go to a “Championship” and “Challenger” model, essentially creating a two-tier system. Championship events will have the $20 million+ purses but, crucially feature 120-man fields WITH A CUT and not the 70-80, no-cut model we’ve seen in Signature events. This is a return to a tried-and-true model that’s worked for golf tournaments for decades and a reversal of the overreaction to LIV. Roughly 90 players will keep their Championship status at the end of the year with the top 20ish finishers from the Challenger series being promoted. The TOUR Championship will also move around from course to course which is great news because Atlanta is just too damn hot in August.
