Apple’s next chapter now has a date. 📱🤯

Tim Cook is stepping down as Apple CEO after 15 years, with John Ternus set to take over on September 1, 2026. Cook stays close to the company as executive chairman, which makes this look less like a break and more like a carefully managed handoff.

The scale of Cook’s run is hard to separate from the story: Apple went from $108 billion in yearly revenue to more than $416 billion under his leadership. But Ternus brings a different center of gravity. He joined Apple in 2001 and helped lead hardware teams behind much of the product lineup people actually hold, wear, charge, and upgrade.

Choosing the hardware leader says something about the next era: Apple still has to make the future feel tangible in people’s hands.

Apple’s new CEO has been announced! On September 1, 2026, John Ternus senior vice president of Hardware Engineering will become the new CEO of Apple. John will take over the role of Tim Cook who will become executive chairman of Apple’s board of directors!

John joined Apple’s product design team in 2001 and became a vice president of Hardware Engineering in 2013. He joined the executive team in 2021 as senior vice president of Hardware Engineering. He was instrumental in the introduction of multiple new product lines, including iPad and AirPods, as well as many generations of products across iPhone, Mac, and Apple Watch.

Tim said: “John Ternus has the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity and with honor. He is a visionary whose contributions to Apple over 25 years are already too numerous to count, and he is without question the right person to lead Apple into the future. I could not be more confident in his abilities and his character, and I look forward to working closely with him on this transition and in my new role as executive chairman.”

Tim Cook joined Apple in 1998 and became CEO in 2011. Since then, he has led the launch of major products and services, including entirely new categories like Apple Watch, AirPods, and Apple Vision Pro, alongside services such as iCloud, Apple Pay, Apple TV+, and Apple Music. He also played a key role in strengthening Apple’s existing product lines.

Under his leadership, Apple’s market value has surged from around $350 billion to $4 trillion, an increase of over 1,000%, while annual revenue has nearly quadrupled, rising from $108 billion in 2011 to more than $416 billion in 2025. The company has significantly expanded its global presence, now operating in over 200 countries and territories, with more than 500 retail stores worldwide. During this period, Apple has added over 100,000 employees and grown its active device base to more than 2.5 billion.

Having briefly spoken with John, I’m sure he’s the right person for the job. I’m excited to see how Apple will flourish under his leadership!

Is Tim Cooked?

After almost 15 years at the helm, Tim Cook will step down as Apple’s CEO on September 1st, and will shift into the role of executive chairman. Apple veteran John Ternus has been tapped as his replacement, after spending over 25 years focused on product development at the company.

“John Ternus has the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity and with honor,” Cook said in a statement announcing the shift.

This is Apple’s first CEO transition since Cook succeeded Steve Jobs at the helm in 2011, shortly before Jobs’ death.

In 2011, Steve Jobs stepped down as CEO of Apple in a short, direct letter that marked one of the most important leadership transitions in tech history.

He made it clear he could no longer meet the responsibilities of the role, recommended Tim Cook as his successor, and shifted to chairman while still staying connected to the company he built.

At that moment, Apple was already one of the most influential companies in the world, but the bigger question was whether it could survive without its most iconic leader.

What followed proved the depth of the system he had built, Apple continued to grow, scale, and dominate new categories, showing that the company was bigger than one person.

Steve Jobs and Tim Cook shaped Apple in very different but complementary ways.

Jobs was the visionary who redefined entire industries, while Cook focused on execution and turned Apple into one of the most efficient and valuable companies in the world.

Cook joined Apple in 1998 to fix its struggling operations. He later became CEO in 2011 after Jobs stepped down, continuing the culture of focus, product quality, and long-term thinking that Jobs had built.

Call it Apple Ternover.

Apple’s incoming CEO John Ternus likely won’t harness the rockstar vibes of Steve Jobs, nor the quieter style of Tim Cook, so...who exactly is he?

With a background heavy on hardware, Ternus will take the reigns from Tim in September. Though its unclear what the Ternus era at Apple will look like, there are some hints sprinkled throughout his decades-long Cupertino tenure.

After a handful of product flops (hello, Vision Pro), Apple has its sights set on AI-powered products. Ternus appears to be the man for that job, with rumored launches like a chatbot-like Siri, new wearables, smart home devices, and a foldable iPhone all coming over the next year.

Tim Cook is the ultimate non-founder success story. As he steps down as Apple CEO after 15 years, that's the biggest takeaway for Business Insider's Alistair Barr.

Silicon Valley lauds founders as the only leaders capable of creating huge, disruptive, and lasting value. Cook blew this "founder mode" theory out of the water in spectacular fashion.

Barr was there at the start. When Steve Jobs died in 2011, he went to Apple headquarters to report on the scene. Underneath the grief, questions lurked. Would the company be OK without its legendary cofounder? Cook, a supply chain and operations specialist, was taking over. Would he be able to innovate as Jobs did?

Tim Cook is stepping down as CEO of Apple… and the next era is about to begin 👀

From joining in 1998 to becoming CEO in 2011, he didn’t just follow Steve Jobs… he scaled Apple into a $3 TRILLION giant 📈

Under Tim:
• iPhone became the world’s most dominant product 📱
• Services (Apple Music, iCloud, App Store) exploded 💰
• Apple Watch redefined wearables ⌚️
• Vision Pro marked Apple’s boldest new category 🥽

Now, hardware chief John Ternus steps in… and this could shift Apple back to pure innovation mode ⚡️

New leadership. New direction. Possibly Apple’s next prime.

Get ready, John Ternus. It's your turn in the hot seat.

When Ternus takes the reins as Apple's CEO later this year, he'll not only step into one of the most coveted jobs in business but also inherit complex challenges from his predecessor, Tim Cook.

There's no denying Cook was pivotal in Apple's growth and dominance — the company's stock is up nearly 2,000% since he took over in 2011. The past two years, though, have been marked by hurdles for the company. When he takes the helm, Ternus will be tasked with righting Apple's AI ship, retaining and growing its talent bench, and proving that Apple is still capable of launching the next big thing.

Apple announced on April 20, 2026, that longtime CEO Tim Cook will step down from the role on September 1, 2026, after nearly 15 years leading the company, during which Apple’s market value grew dramatically to over $4 trillion under his operational expertise following Steve Jobs.

John Ternus, currently Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering and a key figure in product development including the iPhone, has been named as his successor as CEO, with Cook transitioning to the position of executive chairman to support a smooth handover.

The change, described by Apple as the result of thoughtful long-term succession planning, marks one of the most significant leadership shifts in the company’s history as it navigates challenges in AI, new product categories, and maintaining innovation momentum.

End of an era.

Tim Cook is stepping down as CEO of Apple and will transition into the role of Executive Chairman later this year.

Cook will remain in the CEO role through the summer before officially handing things over on September 1 to John Ternus, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering.

Ternus has been with the company for 25 years and will also join Apple’s board as part of the transition.

Cook took over as CEO in 2011, following Steve Jobs, and has since overseen one of the most successful runs in corporate history, turning Apple into a multi-trillion-dollar company.

Now, the company is entering its next chapter.

And for the first time in over a decade, it won’t be led by Tim Cook.
