I get DMs on LinkedIn from strangers telling me I’m - and I quote - “a bit of a knob” 😂 The price of authenticity is being disliked. When I started posting on LinkedIn, people laughed at me. Friends made jokes behind my back. I got DMs telling me I was “cringe.” Even people close to me said I was making a fool of myself. For a while, it stung. Because nobody tells you that when you finally show up as yourself… people will try to drag you back into the box they’re comfortable with. And so, when you stop performing, stop pandering, stop twisting yourself into what other people want you to be… you will piss people off. Friends will fall away. Colleagues will whisper. Strangers will call you arrogant, difficult, “too much.” Good!!!! Because the opposite of being disliked isn’t being loved - it’s being invisible. It’s blending in so much that no one knows who the hell you are or what you stand for. Authenticity is a magnet. It pushes the wrong people away, and draws the right people closer in. So if you’re serious about building a personal brand, a business, a life that actually matters, please for the love of God, STOP chasing the approval of strangers. ... And start chasing YOUR truth. Because yes - the price of authenticity is being disliked. But there is power in being disliked.
