Scotland's traveling fans, the famed Tartan Army, have donated nearly $30,000 to charities in Providence, Rhode Island as a thank-you for hosting them during the World Cup. When the draw sent Scotland to play near Boston and many fans found hotels there unaffordable, they based themselves in Providence instead, with a local group dubbed the Providence Tartan Army helping roughly 5,000 to 10,000 supporters find cheaper lodging. The fans repaid that hospitality in cash and goodwill.

The donations break down across three causes: $10,000 to the cancer unit at Hasbro Children's Hospital, $10,000 to a grassroots soccer program getting underprivileged Rhode Island kids into the game, and $6,500 to the Rhode Island Highlanders Pipe Band to fund a program teaching children to play the bagpipes for two years. The hospital gift is the largest single donation in the Tartan Army's history, presented during a downtown march.

The generosity is a long-running ritual, not a one-off. "Since 2003, every away game, that's 112 consecutive, we donate money to a children's charity," organizer Ally Henry said. The fans raised the money through t-shirt sales and charity portions of their team-bus tickets.

Hennessy's Bar in downtown Boston summed up the scale of it bluntly: "We tripled St. Patrick's Day."

The numbers are staggering. Hennessy's COO Noelle Somers said the 30-year-old bar sold out of beer entirely on Sunday night, adding, "We've never seen anything like it." The Samuel Adams downtown taproom drained roughly 90 kegs of Boston Lager, four times what it sells over a typical four-day holiday stretch, forcing emergency deliveries. Federal Wine & Spirits sold out of Budweiser and Corona in a day, and reportedly broke a fridge door from constant opening. One fan recalled arriving at the White Bull Tavern to find "no beer, the Scottish fans just drank the place dry, and all they had was Bud Light."

The revelry included a party boat where fans reportedly downed 2,000 beers before the Haiti match. Scotland won 1-0, then marched on Fenway Park. They face Morocco next.

As thousands of members of Scotland’s famous Tartan Army flood Boston for the World Cup, they’ve been drinking bars dry, clearing out beer inventories, and turning the city into a sea of navy blue jerseys. ⚽️

But for many supporters, there’s one stop that’s become just as important as the pubs. That would be Jobi Liquors. 🥃

The family-owned liquor store has been drawing massive crowds after Scottish fans realized its name sounds remarkably similar to “jobbie,” a slang word back home for… poop. 💩

What started as an inside joke has turned into a full-blown tourist destination, with thousands of fans reportedly stopping by to snap photos outside the store before stocking up on drinks. 📸

The owner says business has been booming and he’s constantly having to order more beer to keep up with demand.

Not bad for a liquor store that accidentally became the funniest landmark in Boston. 🤣🍺

Boston has welcomed hundreds of thousands of soccer fans from around the globe who have descended upon the city for the World Cup. 🌎🏆

However, its bars and liquor stores were apparently not prepared for the ones who’ve arrived from Scotland, as the “Tartan Army” has been credited with exhausting the beer supply at a number of establishments in Beantown.

Scottish fans have made their mark on the city since they began to arrive ahead of the tournament, and businesses that specialize in the sale of alcoholic beverages have been caught off guard by how thirsty they are.🍺

A number of flights that ferried Scottish fans to the United States for the World Cup ran out of beer before they landed, and that set the tone for what was slated to unfolded whent those supporters touched down.

According to The Boston Globe, Hennessy’s Bar, a watering hole located in the shadow of City Hall, credited the Tartan Army for drinking all of the beer they had on hand for the weekend, with the owner saying their supply was exhausted on Sunday night after tripling the amount of revenue they raked in on St. Patrick’s Day. ☘️

That came a day after Federal Wine & Spirits, a package store in the Financial District, ran out of all of the Budweiser and Corona it had stocked, and a refrigerator ended up breaking due to the heat that came with the front door constantly opening and closing due to the endless stream of customers. 😂

The outlet spoke with an Irish bar in Providence that was able to meet the demand while making $2,000 more than it normally does on a typical day, as the capital of Rhode Island also emerged as a prime destination for soccer fans thanks to its proximity to Foxborough (which is just 20 miles north). 🇮🇪

That includes the ones from Scotland who commissioned a massive fleet of school buses to save money on transportation costs, and one man said they dropped $16,000 on beer (the bulk of which seemed to be the beloved local delicacy that is Narragansett) for the occasion.

Now the cone is a symbol of the city and it’s unthinkable for it to be absent,” an Edinburgh native informed a curious Bostonian on social media.

During their opening group stage match on Saturday night, Scotland earned their first World Cup victory since 1990 with their 1-0 win over Haiti, giving them a roughly 75% chance to advance out of the group stage. ⚽️

A single point across their next two games will take them to four points and will likely be enough to earn a berth in the next round.
