This is NASA’s Artemis II launch - captured from space.

As the rocket lifted off from Kennedy Space Center, satellites orbiting Earth recorded the moment from multiple angles, offering a rare perspective of humans beginning their journey back toward the Moon.

Four astronauts - three American and one Canadian - are now on a 10-day mission that will take them around the Moon for the first time since 1972. The goal is to test human capabilities in deep space and lay the groundwork for future lunar landings.

The footage was captured by GOES satellites operated by the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA), showing just how powerful the launch was, even from orbit.

Four astronauts just made deep space feel current again 👨‍🚀🌕

NASA’s Artemis II launched on April 1, sending four astronauts around the Moon and beyond low Earth orbit for the first time since 1972. It isn’t a landing mission; it’s a live test of the rocket, spacecraft, life-support systems, and crew operations needed to put people back on the lunar surface by 2028.

That matters because deep-space programs don’t restart with a single triumphant moment. They restart when the whole chain works again with humans on board, from launch and navigation to reentry and recovery.

The real milestone is that human spaceflight is operating past Earth orbit again.

This mission just got a whole lot more important 😭

NASA’s Artemis II just successfully launched with four astronauts onboard, marking the first time humans have gone beyond low Earth orbit since the Apollo era. Right now, they’re orbiting Earth running system checks before heading toward the Moon, basically proving everything needed for future lunar missions actually works in real conditions.

What makes this even crazier is what comes next… this isn’t the destination, it’s the setup. This mission is laying the groundwork for humans returning to the Moon and eventually pushing even further to Mars, meaning we’re officially stepping back into deep space again.

The Artemis II rocket has officially launched for the Moon - and for the first time in over half a century, humans are heading back into deep space.

Carried by NASA’s most powerful rocket ever built, four astronauts are now onboard the Orion spacecraft, beginning a journey around the Moon that will take them farther from Earth than any human has travelled in decades.

After the success of Artemis I in 2022, Artemis II brings people back into the story, testing every system needed to safely carry humans beyond low Earth orbit once again.

The last time astronauts went this far was during the Apollo era. Now, a new generation is picking up where history left off - with the goal of returning to the lunar surface for the first time since 1972.

A new era of lunar exploration is officially underway.

A moonshot is ten days of precision under pressure 🌘🚀

From April 1 to April 10, the crew moves through a tightly staged lunar flyby: launch, translunar burn, course corrections, entry into the moon’s gravitational pull, a 4,000-mile pass, then return burns and a Pacific splashdown. Each step depends on the last, so the mission isn’t one heroic moment but a sequence of measured decisions in deep space.

Even the dramatic parts follow the same logic: lost contact near the moon, medical checks, manual piloting drills, and reentry prep all exist to keep the crew stable when distance, speed, and gravity start compounding.

Human trips around the moon work because the mission keeps getting corrected, tested, and controlled all the way home.

NASA’s Artemis II mission lifted off from Kennedy Space Center on April 1 at 6:35 p.m. ET, sending four astronauts on a 10 day journey around the Moon in the first crewed lunar mission in over 53 years.

The crew includes NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen.

The mission has already set several historic firsts: Glover has become the first Black astronaut to travel to the Moon, Koch the first woman to venture this far from Earth, and Hansen the first non American in history to go beyond low Earth orbit.

The flyby is designed to test the Orion spacecraft’s life support systems, navigation, and performance in deep space conditions including radiation, extreme temperatures, and communication blackouts, all with a crew on board for the first time.

If this mission goes as planned, it will pave the way for Artemis III, which aims to land astronauts on the Moon for the first time since Apollo 17 in December 1972, including the first woman to ever walk on the lunar surface.

We’re going back to the Moon 🌕🚀

NASA is set to launch its Artemis II mission today, marking the first time humans will travel beyond low Earth orbit in more than 50 years.

The crew of four astronauts will fly around the Moon on a 10-day mission, travelling roughly 685,000 miles before returning to Earth. While they won’t land, the flight is designed to test systems and gather data ahead of future missions aiming to put humans back on the lunar surface.

It’s also a historic moment for representation in space, with Christina Koch set to become the first woman, Victor Glover the first person of colour, and Jeremy Hansen the first non-American to travel into deep space.

The launch is a major step in NASA’s long-term plan to build a permanent human presence on the Moon later this decade 🚀

NASA astronaut Christina Koch is set to become the first woman to travel around the Moon as part of the Artemis II mission.

She already holds the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman at 328 days… and now she’s part of the team aiming to take humans back to deep space for the first time in over 50 years.

If the mission goes as planned, Artemis II will mark the first crewed journey around the Moon since Apollo 17 in 1972.

LA County to the Moon.

Victor Glover, a Pomona native, is set to become the first Black astronaut to travel around the Moon as part of NASA’s Artemis II mission.

He started out studying engineering at Cal Poly, went on to become a Navy pilot flying combat missions, and eventually logged over 3,500 flight hours before joining NASA.

In 2021, he spent six months aboard the International Space Station.

Now he’s heading into deep space.

Not a bad trajectory.
