well that escalated quickly. sample is @pinkpantheress ! idk if any producers out there have heard the words granular synthesis and not known what it was or think it sounds confusing. i just wanted to make this lil thing to help explain it and demystify sound design little by little. the possibilities are endless because there are so many ways to manipulate the little slices (they’re called grains) size, position, rate, pitch, spray, envelope, direction, pan, and warping, grain shape etc. every tool is different, i love this type of sample-based synthesis and hopefully this inspires someone to go explore this for the first time. 🫶

what does an LFO do? here’s a non-technical explanation i made for no reason. synth stuff all being named with acronyms (in this case, low frequency oscillator) is a fine way to describe what is actually happening sonically, but it can be tough for people to wrap their minds around until you really get used to synthesis. anyway, if you see the letters LFO on your synthesizer or in your music software and weren’t totally sure what it was, now you know what it does. go try it :)

3 tips for if your bass disappears on phone speakers. i wanted to include a bit about why this actually happens bc I feel like people just accept it and move on but understanding the fundamental isn’t coming through is the basis for why all three tips involve either creating or accentuating harmonics in either the production or the mix. Sometimes I will use a combination of all three of these depending on how much of the sub’s characteristic I am trying to preserve.

gear used- sequencing the @arturia_official polybrute with the @torsoelectronics T1 (gifted a while back). the polybrute has its own onboard sequencer, in fact most of the plugins you have probably do, but i feel like producers tend to ignore them. they’re so great as starters for making something you might not normally make though. also used my broken drum and tiny brush put through a long washy reverb with a hi pass. vocal stacks are slammed cause wow i am NOT a vocalist but had some help from antares harmony engine and UAD capitol chambers. trying to remember anything else i used right now haha idk ask about anything specific

little BTS and sneak peak of the song “Steady” coming out Friday, produced with @so.wylie !! This is a song I wrote about trying to hold the sails steady in the whirlwind sh*t storm that life can be and I’m so excited that Wylie and I got a chance to produce this together. a couple years ago I brought her “Nightmare Machine” ( a song about begging for the world to have some rest from scary things) and “Steady” in some ways is a response to that song. It’s a contemplation of natural joy and resiliency. About trying stay steady, empathetic and moving forward, even when the winds keep trying to blow you over. Swipe for a sneak peak and also cat adorableness

okay okay maybe you need to know a few things to learn a synth but you can also just turn knobs and see what happens :)

the full steps i took to get to that sound:
- used the Tl to sequence a rhythm and take the octave down
- increase the depth of freq mod, waveform set to triangle
- change the source of my pulsewidth mod to LFO2, make it fast (this is the higher pitch you hear)
- increase the depth of the pulsewidth mod. THEN
- make the FM source LFO1, make that LFO slow and triangle
- add brightness using positive exponential frequency mod
- mode lowpass filter and up the resonance
- up the decay on my envelope for more bounce

the fastest I have ever fallen for a synth.. the Summit. 🏔️thanks @wearenovation for our continued partnership! been adding this to everything for months. fyi this is a hybrid synth which means it has digital FPGA oscillators (16 voices!) with an analog filter and true analog stereo signal path. for the girl who wants it all (me)

so almost 2 years ago this Launchkey MK4 earned a permanent spot in my studio! thanks to @wearenovation for partnering with me on this one, I love making music with this thing. Fixed Chord (where you can hold down keys to make a chord which plays each time you press a key) exists on their smaller models too btw.

yall. try putting a sequence or midi pattern through a different instrument and see if you make something new with it. it’s interesting how different this came out vs the song from my last video. also i nevvvvver make high pitched stuff with the doepfer dark energy since it’s so great for gritty sawtoothy bass but for some reason this took me in the opposite direction. ended up kinda cute

it’s a very tempting month for music producers and audio engineers, i’ll say that. caved and ended up with the nudistort and new valhalla verb.

ended up in an interesting place with this one 😇 i like using guitar/ fx pedals as outboard gear cause a lot of the instruments i use are software instruments. so i send them out of my comp and then back in. i’m still narrowing down how i want everything set up but this is how i’ve been using them recently. music producers who are also guitarists, ykwim

what do yall think about this topline? idk about it haha. but having fun with uneven phrase lengths and teensy lil lemondrop granular synth (gifted to me by @1010_music and much appreciated) 🍋
