What happened to the Black American baseball player?

African-American representation in the MLB peaked in the mid-1970s to early 1980s, reaching approximately 18.7% of players in 1981.

Since then it has dropped to UNDER 7% as of 2023.

We’ve asked MLB legends – like Barry Bonds, Gary Sheffield, and Eric Davis – why this is the case, and there are several theories out there. The NBA’s rise, an influx of Latin-born players, a lack of Black coaches and scouts in the minor leagues, have all contributed to the drop.

Seeing the Team USA 2026 World Baseball Classic roster, which had just two African-Americans on a roster of 30, made us think of what Team USA could have looked like in the 80’s and 90’s. 💭

What’s your theory? Why do you think we’re seeing less and less Black American players in the MLB each year?
