I have the answer for you… but it’s 450 pages long and the answer itself is honestly less important than the pursuit. I’ve always found inspiration from watching others, like my cousin Nathan Williams who wrote this book, The Eye.  And I’m inspired by this next generation of creative minds who dont seem to have as many limiting beliefs. Anyone could become a creative director. As an Italian-Sri Lankan Surf Instructor on the South Island of New Zealand once told me,  “If someone else is doing it, you can too.” #creativedirector #artdirection #design

What even is a “BIG IDEA”??  It’s often too nebulous. Agencies love to talk about them. Recruiters will say they are looking for “conceptual art directors” who can think of “big ideas”. But hardly anyone explains to young art directors & designers what exactly a big idea should look like. The Idea Sizing chart made it all more tangible for me. Does this help simplify it for you?

But hardly anyone explains to young art directors & designers what exactly a big idea should look like. The Idea Sizing chart made it all more tangible for me. Does this help simplify it for you?

I’m not as familiar with Rosalía, and the Easter eggs planted into the sets are endless. But I was CAPTIVATED! This was only released last week, but you can already scroll the interpretations endlessly on Reddit. For me, the most obvious creative principle here is CONTRAST. Not just contrasting color or size. But contrasting subjects. The team created so much tension with the mix of languages, scenes, situations, textures. It’s a masterclass that goes beyond graphic principles into storytelling. The category and logo attached to the creative work brings with it a lot of baggage. To me this “film” is a masterful, well-crafted step in the right direction but I wonder if this will help the brand or category as a whole gain positive mainstream reception. What do you think?

One of the simplest but most meaningful challenges you could do on your next trip or photo-walk. I wouldn’t remember any of this if I hadn’t written a few words down… Hope this adds a little meaning and inspiration to your next adventure.

Brands could do a lot more interesting things like this from @Oatly x @Nikolas Bentel, if they consider these 2 tips from @Dan Salkey: 1. Treat creators as creatives NOT influencers 2. Treat influencer budgets as creative/production budgets NOT media spend What are your thoughts on this??

Behind the Art Direction of @The Ordinary‘s new “Periodic Fable” campaign.  This is one of my favorite marketing efforts in recent years showing the eerie truth of modern beauty CULTure.  The references seemed clear to me as a viewer but I had to get the inside scoop from the creative team at Uncommon. Appreciate them being willing to share some of the thought that went into this concept and the film, photography, design, social posts and ads that were a part of this campaign. 2 mins on IG isn’t enough. These kinds of projects require a massive effort from multiple teams. Huge orops to the full team: - The Ordinary Brand manager: Amy Bi & team - Uncommon Elisa Czerwenka (senior creative/art) & Ellie Daghlian (senior creative/copy) and  Jake Haynes (senior creative/art) & Ali Dickinson (senior creative/ copy) And many more I’m sure. - Smuggler Director: Olivia de Camps & team  -Cabin Edit Editor: Alvaro Del Val -Studio RM Colourist: Myles Bevan
