When it comes to hooks, most people just think visually… But music can stop the scroll just as hard.
And when I need quality music that is made with real human intention, I turn to Musicbed. They’re not your typical stock music library. They’re a music licensing agency. Every artist is hand curated by their in-house Musicbed team.

Hope this helps anyone interested in these careers and trying to understand the nuances.

What questions do you have about art direction and creative direction?

Pictured is Jessica Walsh and Stefan Sagmeister in the book “The Eye” by Nathan Williams. Absolutely legendary creative directors.

Your imagery should actually say something.
I use @withstills because they are a photo licensing agency that hand picks and curates a roster of award winning photographers that actually say something with their work!

I have the answer for you…

but it’s 450 pages long and the answer itself is honestly less important than the pursuit.

I’ve always found inspiration from watching others, like my cousin @nathanwilliams who wrote this book, The Eye.

And I’m inspired by this next generation of creative minds who dont seem to have as many limiting beliefs. Anyone could become a creative director.

As an Italian-Sri Lankan Surf Instructor on the South Island of New Zealand once told me,

“If someone else is doing it, you can too.”

A symphony of anxiety portrayed beautifully 🤌

// I have to admit I’m a little out of my depths with this one. I don’t speak German or Spanish. I’m not as familiar with Rosalía, and the Easter eggs planted into the sets are endless. But I was CAPTIVATED!
This was only released last week, but you can already scroll the interpretations endlessly on Reddit.
For me, the most obvious creative principle here is CONTRAST. Not just contrasting color or size. But contrasting subjects. The team created so much tension with the mix of languages, scenes, situations, textures. It’s a masterclass that goes beyond graphic principles into storytelling.

What have I missed??

The collective *sigh* heard around America at the end of Coinbase’s Super Bowl karaoke spot was deafening. But that’s not a dig at the creativity of their agency @isleofany, more so highlighting the colossal mountain of a brand perception problem they are tasked with navigating. The category and logo attached to the creative work brings with it a lot of baggage.
To me this “film” is a masterful, well-crafted step in the right direction but I wonder if this will help the brand or category as a whole gain positive mainstream reception. What do you think?

What even is a “BIG IDEA”??
It’s often too nebulous.
Agencies love to talk about them. Recruiters will say they are looking for “conceptual art directors” who can think of “big ideas”.
But hardly anyone explains to young art directors & designers what exactly a big idea should look like.

The Idea Sizing Chart made it all more tangible for me.

Does this help simplify it for you?

The most common question but the hardest to answer, especially with shortform and carousels. Theres no one path. My experience is pretty specific to the brand advertising/marketing industry. It takes a lot of work, and even creatives with decades of experience struggle explaining these concepts. Even mastering them is tough let alone teaching.

But that’s why I’m slowly bringing back longform. If you can spring the cash to learn with me live, and in my class, you’ll get there a lot faster, but if not I still got you. I’m trying to put as much out there as possible. I never want the paid programs to feel like I’m gatekeeping. Plus, if my students watch this first, we can actually cover even more and go deeper in class.

Anyway, that’s my intention. I’m here if you have any questions.

I might regret this, but here’s a few of the differences between an art director and creative director in the brand marketing and advertising world (emphasis on a FEW)

Hope this helps any young creative persons who had no idea these jobs existed

…like little j from rural Canada who never dreamed of turning his imagination into an actual career like this

You don’t have to go to school to become an art director. But you will never stop being a student.

I partnered with @adobe to share 3 courses from Adobe Digital Academy I wish I had starting out.

How do you become visually fluent?

In Episode 3 of my series “The Theory of Taste” we are beginning to turn your taste into an actual skill. Taste will never be the moat or great advantage our tech overlords claim it to be if you can’t speak the language.

We use this metaphor of “taste” like its the answer to everything, so I want to push that metaphor as far as possible. Do you understand the ingredients of that visual flavor? Can you work with, collaborate with, or direct the chefs?

Taste ≠ visual literacy. It’s a huge part of the process of gaining that fluency. But is it truly your greatest advantage? Let me know what you think.

Is taste the advantage everyone claims it to be?

This is episode 1 of my new series on Taste where I’ll stretch the metaphor, discuss the nuances, and outline actions we can take together to develop insatiable taste.

One of the simplest but most meaningful challenges you could do on your next trip or photo-walk.

I wouldn’t remember any of this if I hadn’t written a few words down…

Hope this adds a little meaning and inspiration to your next adventure.

Polished execution won’t impress anyone in 2026. People want to see the effort poured into a messy process.
