We took over a gas station in Japan! 🤭⛽️

If you’ve ever come across a cute little ENEOS station on your feed, then you’ve already had the pleasure of meeting @gs.miatas and his wife @gs.minnie.

Who They Are 🏡
Opened nearly 60 years ago by Issei-san’s grandfather, this family-run gas station found new life when Issei and his wife picked up a camera and began documenting daily life.

How They Blew Up 💥
The power couple built a global following through their series “POV: You stopped at a gas station in Japan,” giving us a look at JDM car culture while also teaching us gaijins some “Japanglish” translations.

Where It’s Located 📍
ENEOS Senriyama SS is in Suita City, about 45 mins north of central Osaka. It’s a tiny station tucked inside a quiet neighborhood. I personally dig its clean aesthetic with ceiling-mounted hoses and also the old school uniforms!

Let’s Go Osaka 💡
@jdmwong came up with the idea to collaborate with them on an @eneosusa video featuring the @exceed_jpn EK4 and @stickydiljoe EG6 Civics. Of course I was down to go… 🫠

Why This Is Dope 🎌
I’ve been part of many shoots in Japan, but this one stood out — not only for having an entire gas station as our set, but for teaming up with local creators who transformed an everyday job into something JDM car enthusiasts from around world genuinely love. 🫶

The Mintia livery was probably one of the most fun things that I had the opportunity to create but this new @exceed_jpn EK would be a more focused effort for 2026. I wanted to come up with something new, that wasn’t a flip of anything known, and something that would stamp this project as the new flagship look for Exceed…

First thing was coming up with the color. Like I said previously, I wanted both cars to not only match in color but also have their own look since they both serve different purposes. The yellow was a very specific color I’ve wanted to do for a long time, a color you’d never think we’d touch, and that is BMW 337, aka Dakar Yellow II. 337 specifically over the original because it has more yellow to it, though it’s still muted compared to Honda yellows. I think it gives both cars a very unique hue though it made coming up with a livery harder. I really wanted to do a something inspired by the old Camel race liveries because I like a palette consisting of a yellow with a dark contrasting blue. The third color would be a complimentary tone so I chose white. Silver and grey would be an additional color but it would be used only for mechanical pieces so you won’t see it on the exterior. The idea is to host colors that pair well and to keep it consistent…

The Civic itself is an evolved version of the previous Mintia EK. It will use a built B18C from Tatsumi Eng/Charge and will carry much less weight. The rear floor has been cut, there’s a custom mounting section for a fuel cell, most of the glass will be polycarbonate, and the doors, roof, hood, and hatch will be carbon fiber but painted. The cage is a traditional Mugen one and the car will of course carry very traditional Kansai styling…

I’m actually headed back to Japan now to oversee the completion of both cars as we near our first-ever Tokyo Pop-Up event. 2025 was a blast but I’m literally flying right into 2026 because big things are already happening.

Hello world, let me introduce you to the new Exceed flagship, simply dubbed “337”. Come see it for the first time with the rest of the world as we debut it Tokyo Auto Salon weekend in Meguro City at Calif Art Gallery Jan 8-12…

Happy New Year!🥂

I took a very measured approach to our Tokyo Debut pop-up once we figured out what the location was. The art gallery space would pair well in contrast to the two Hondas from Osaka. In terms of size, it was basically the same as your typical Japanese single-unit workshop. There was one long L-shaped wall on one side and the opposite end was a translucent wall which separated us from a vintage furniture store. Since the sizing was similar to Yasu’s shop, I knew immediately how to lay the cars out…

The concept would be simple when it came to presentation; everything was to be monotone except for the cars themselves. When you entered, all your focus should be on the two Dakar Yellow Civics. Everything else was black and white. Anything related to the cars, i.e. the merch, would be in the same color palette as the cars yellows, blues, and whites. The walls would host five A1-sized prints but they would be black & white with a very slight hint of yellow. The frames of course, would be white. The centerpieces to the wall “art” would be the two vented FRP hoods off of each car. The hoods even had quick release hinges on them to make them easier to remove. At first I thought the gallery owner might disapprove of hanging car parts on the wall but he not only obliged, he even offered us whatever tools we needed to make it happen…

When I first saw the wall layout, I already knew I wanted to hang the hoods. That’s why the original flyer was literally just a hood. I couldn’t quite release the livery to the world yet so I wanted to offer the hood with the colors we would be using for the cars. @eneosusa came onboard to help support the event so we applied ENEOS bottles in a subtle way without disrupting the overall flow. Two oil drums were painted and added to the display which served as our countertop for merch.

Over the course of 4-days we had a crazy turnout with people visiting from all over. From chatting with people during “Tokyo Car Week”, it seemed like the concept was well-received overall. The juxtaposition of placing two Civics from gritty Osaka and placing them in the middle of the nice, upscale city of Meguro in a muted gallery space played-out perfectly…

🏎️💨 The Legend Continues…

After nearly 15 years of collecting dust in Santa Fe Springs and Cerritos, the @evasivemotorsports ‘06 Mitsubishi Evo 9 makes a SEMA Show comeback. In 2011, the car won the Limited AWD Class at @superlapbattle Buttonwillow running a 1:49.124 (driven by the one and only @mikaljun). It’s finally been resurrected with new Voltex WTAC-inspired widebody aero, HKS turbo + internals + upgrades, Radium fueling, KW suspension, MoTeC ECU and Advan GT Beyond-R wheels. 🏁

Tokyo Car Week included a two-part project for @eneosusa that reconnected @duspeed and I to cover it like it was the old Super Street days. You already saw part one, the Tokyo pop-up with @stickydiljoe and @exceed_jpn Civics, and after TAS weekend, we hit Osaka to link up with @gs.miatas, an #ENEOS gas station that became popular with their unique approach to showing JDM car culture. I thought it would be fun to include them in the project by having them feature the EG and EK in their style, I couldn’t be happier with the results (wait for the finale!). It took some careful planning to make it work, so I really appreciate the combined efforts of everyone involved!

Two Osaka-Built Civics. One Epic Tokyo Debut. 🎌

Wrappin’ up my last few Japan posts with a closer look at the @exceed_jpn x @stickydiljoe pop-up presented by @eneosusa ⛽️

🏎️ EXCEED EK4 Race Car
Built B18C with Myers Competition header and loads more goodies
Carbon roof and doors + fiberglass hatch and fenders + Lexan glass
Fully stripped with cut rear floor to shave extra weight
Lovin’ the Mugen rollcage, TE37s and fuel cell setup!

🚗 CHRNCLS EG6 Street Car
Built B16B (EK9 Civic Type R) with larger pistons, TODA catalog and more
Tucked and tidy engine bay with custom Rywire harness
New Exceed dual vented hood and Alcantara touches inside
Can’t go wrong with Mugen MF10s!

💛 Both hatches demonstrate incredible attention to detail and are also painted Dakar Yellow 337 from the BMW E36 M3!

👏 Congrats and major props to Joey, Yasu, Chuy and the whole supporting crew for killin’ it during TAS weekend. It’s no small feat, not just finishing two cars, but unveiling them at a 4-day pop-up miles away from home, while also creating a gallery experience and producing cool merch to tie it all in. I should note that TAS doesn’t typically attract Hondas, so was dope to witness the overwhelming turnout of visitors to check ‘em out! 🏁

What’s the point of doing what we do if we’re not constantly evolving? Many of you were pretty shocked when the Exceed Mintia Civic showed-up here in the U.S. after my EK9 landed months earlier. Those two cars played a pivotal role in Osaka for @exceed_jpn but they reside in California because we had to make space for new projects—and more importantly, new challenges…

So for the first-time ever, we are setting our sights Tokyo-side in the beautiful city of Meguro for a gallery exhibition during TAS where we will be debuting not one, but two brand new builds. There’s a new Civic race car on the way as well as a long-anticipated (at least by me) EG6 build that we’ve been collecting parts for, for what seems like, forever. Only my close friends knew about this, but the EK9 was never supposed to happen because I had planned to build an EG6 over the years. The new race car is the further evolution of what the Mintia EK was. It will be a bit more intricate, still with that Kansai aesthetic, but with an entirely new look…

Join us alongside @eneosusa as we embark on a new journey for 2026 during Tokyo Auto Salon weekend.

The Exceed x CHRNCLS pop-up event, presented by ENEOS, will happen January 8-12 at the Calif Art Gallery located along the Meguro River.

Calif Art Gallery
1-29-6 1F Aobadai, Meguro-ku, Tokyo 153-0042

Now, there’s much to do, so back to work we go…

See you in Tokyo.
