Today the iconic Marilyn Monroe would have turned 100 years old!
Throwback to when the press called Marilyn Monroe’s red dress “cheap and vulgar” in February 1952, writing she’d “look better in a potato sack.” Twentieth Century Fox took that literally, having costume designer William Travilla fashion a burlap potato sack into a form-fitting dress within days. Photographer Gene Kornman shot the response, and the photos ran in the Los Angeles Mirror on February 23rd.
The sitting became a sensation, with over 400 newspapers printing the photos. An Idaho potato farmer reportedly sent Monroe a whole sack of potatoes as a thank-you for the publicity.
