Beijing planned to pay Eileen Gu millions of dollars to compete under its flag, on top of the tens of millions she already earns from Western sponsors.
Gu switched from the U.S. to China in 2019, a move that would require Chinese citizenship since dual nationality is banned. She has never said whether she gave up her U.S. passport, instead saying, “When I’m in the U.S., I’m American. When I’m in China, I’m Chinese.”
Traders predict less than a 1% chance Gu will win the most medals at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
