In 2015, at the Sapporo Snow Festival, Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Forces carved a 15-meter-tall Star Wars scene using over 3,000 tons of snow, featuring Darth Vader, stormtroopers, and the Death Star looming behind them.
The military has helped build the festival’s giant sculptures since 1955, using the projects as real-world training for large-scale construction in extreme winter conditions.
The design was officially approved by Lucasfilm and timed ahead of the release of The Force Awakens, turning the installation into both a cultural spectacle and a massive temporary promotion.
