#TSRPolitics: As details about the hantavirus outbreak aboard the #MVHondius continue to emerge, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a statement.

Wednesday evening, the CDC said, “The safety and health of the affected American travelers is our number one goal. Hantavirus is not spread by people without symptoms; transmission requires close contact, and the risk to the American public is very low.”

According to @cbsnews, five states said they are monitoring passengers who debarked the ship in April before any cases were confirmed. There are two passengers each in Georgia and Texas, one from Arizona, and one from Virginia. There are reportedly an unspecified number from California. Each state has said that those being monitored have not shown signs of infection.

Other countries monitoring passengers who left before any cases were confirmed include Canada, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.

With the recent outbreak, concerns about sanitation on cruise ships have risen. It was reported last year that full-time employees in the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program were laid off. However, in a statement to @people, a CDC spokesperson said, “CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) remains fully staffed, including epidemiologists, and continues to carry out all core program activities for cruise ships under U.S. jurisdiction.”

On Thursday, the World Health Organization held a media briefing, where the Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, “I have been in touch with the ship’s captain regularly, including this morning. He told me morale has improved significantly since the ship started moving again.”
